Are they worth training for? I've always just used Ogres...

For some things yes.

for most things. train for t2 sentries first. the only time you will ever need ogres is when you have a cruiser+ opponent at point blank and u cant kite him. sentries own in pve (i dont use ogres) and in most if not all pvp situations. ogres take about 15 seconds to get to a target thats 20km away. this is where most pvp occurs. sentries deal damage instantly, and can 2-shot AF's from 120km if needed. lots of things.

If you train Sentries go to T2 asap. the difference is amazing.
Ogres just take too long to travel. Sentries have instant damage. And you dont need the recial spec for them. Just Sentry drone interfacing at V.
I have T2 sentries trained for a long time, but still T1 heavies. |

T2 sentries are good. I have seen a number of BSs deploy them at gates and all are assigned to guard a fast locker (assault frig or inty). Soon as someone comes through the gate, the inty locks and fires, and the target gets a facefull of T2 sentry DPS at the same time.
Usually only used by Minmatar and Gallente though

Yes they are good and have various deployments.
- L4 missions, especially when boosted (Omni's / TPs) - Sniping BS - most can fit 5 sentries. - Kiting cruiser hulls: Gila/Ishtar can both control 5
Unlike T2 heavies, T2 sentries do not require separate skills for each race. Have said this the two you will use the most, as above says, are Bouncer II (minmatter) and Garde II.
Bouncer II - Long range, explosive damage, ok tracking past about 40km Garde II - close range, best tracking, best damage, thermal
With 2 Omnidirectional Tracking Links Garde II can hit well at 45km with good tracking. Five of them from a drone boat will hit for just shy of 500dps before sentry rigs.

They are incredibly useful in PvE, as they don't have to travel anywhere. If you are serious about using drones as a main PvE weapon, you will need them
In PvP, shooting POSes and anything that doesn't require moving (gate and station humping), as its no fun to leave 5 Garde II behind. ...Then when you stopped to think about it. All you really said was Lalala. |

If you use drones on large ships, then yes. If you are using a Domi..then it's a must!

They will drop anything from 15km+ range. Including frigs.

From my experience 15km is a bit of a gamble but 20km is still a death zone if the frigs are elite you have to start from a 40km, though.

Yeah, something like that. Mostly the key thing is that to target those frigs ASAP when you enter. Then drop out the drones and start cycling the weapons. The instant you get a lock..it's basically instapop. I usually stick the guns and drones on different frigs and end up with all the frigs dead even before they have any chance of doing anything.
I've got good skills on drones so I'm still getting good shots on elites frigs even they are close. Nowhere near instapops, but they get "some" damage. The main reason why I'm now crosstraining to minmatar is that I don't have to play around with the drones too much and still have mobility. At the moment you need to dump out wardens, then gardes and if someone manages to sneak in (being a elite frig) you need release light drones. All this while not in motion and taking fire. Not ideal. So that's why...mael + AC's and light drones. Basically the same wide range of the drones, with firepower. Mobility and drones to take out frigs. Win win.

Looking from a PvE perspective:
If in a mobile ship then you may be ok without them (slugging back in a slow BS to scoop them up is murder...). Having small / medium drones as anti-frig is worth more, and you can fill the remaining drone hold with large drones.
If you're flying a faster ship (Gila, Ishtar) or a brick wall (Rattler, Domi) then you'll want to get T2 sentries as soon as possible!
T2 sentries with 2 omni links will usually be able to track and destroy all NPC ships orbiting short of fast elite cruisers, elite frigs and frigs.

From a PvP perspective, they're absolutely worth it. They're fantastic for PvP battleships of any race, and if you're Gallente specced, you can use nano Ishtars and Gilas.

I've only had problems with certain elite frigs and Angel BS! Everything else gets the chop nicely. Angels...always bring heavies with you.
