I also prefer the current forums but that is probably because I have been using it for about 5 years, however the layout of the new forum is clean, easy to read and overall seems practical although I haven't been able to log in to post yet). And the new forum is still in testing stage so theres still time for some adjustments.

First impressions : * doesn't seem to work - I'm logged into the evegate side, go to forum, nothing, still as if I'm not logged in, what the heck - SO GOOD JOB !!! * looks annoying - bloody hell, I'm already fed up by the fact I get the left and right areas of the screen cut off on THESE forums, but the new ones, they're even thinner... that's friggin' irritating * old forum getting archeived instead of copied over... MONUMENTALLY annoying, to the point of being almost downright stupid, and I don't care WHY they had to do it this way, there's no excuse for being unable to just import the damn text over _

THIS
Why? Because the old forums are compact and you can find the information much faster. The new forums are way, way too much focussing on 'good looks' instead of 'good usability'. It begins with insane huge avatar pictures, then too many spaces and a very small font.
But ...
The new forums are just in the TEST stage, so these layout things will certainly get optimized and better.
Otherwise I think the new features like search and RSS. Especially the RSS stuff is useful on the auction threads. |

I had that too. You have to select a character before going to the forums to see them 'logged in'. Of course it would be kind if CCP would actually remind you to select a character. I've made a thread regarding this issue on the new forums: https://testforums.evegate.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=428

You'd swear they've never heard of SSIS. Considering they're running SQL Server, surely a few simple data flow tasks, etc. could take care of that? Send me a sample database and I'd bloody well do it for free.
That said.
Can't login. The new forums are character image heavy, much slower than these forums and seem to focus more on the frames and glittery bits than the actual content. It's like you asked a Mac user to design the forums, instead of somebody that actually has to work with a computer.
Can't say I'm impressed with them.

Yo, CCP, the Background image is pretty **** for a forum. I'd suggest something more simple (Hell, straight black is better tbh).
Here's what I'm using though;
Example.
Original image.
It's all opinion though; but I favour more basic backgrounds. I've set it to top left no-repeat fixed, but a larger version would be fairly easy to do and wouldn't require the fixedness.
Just my 2 pennies.

Personally, I don't think evegate is rubbish. It has its uses, for example checking my mail while on the road. And while I never used the calender on evegate, it also brought a calender to the client, which is very nice. They're also 2 totally different sets of teams, so you REALLY don't want the web team working on game issues.
You also don't have to "use eve gate to use the forums", they're just more tightly linked. From what I've seen, you don't need to have any eve gate features on to be able to post on the forums, its just easier to get get to someone's evegate profile from a forum post they made.
And we HAVE been asking for new forums forever, so its nice they're actually doing something we asked for.

I get put in a login loop when trying to log in to "New and Improved" forums.
So let me get the nerdrage stuff out of the way first. In the words of Maestro Ulv:
Quote: The new forums are complete w*nk. They went the way of all none thinking corporate monkeys who decided form over function was the way to a better future.
Form over function people!! How does anyone who builds anything these days, not understand this?? Too many pretty pictures, wide margins, graphics that look like they belong in a thought bubble above Wile E. Coyote (Supergenious)! SERIOUSLY!
Now: ItÆs all very pretty but thatÆs not (imho) what we want. (in no particular order) -Search function (check?) -Ease of use (have already had issues logging in, replying, posting, reading à #fail) -Performance (fantasy: click on button, something happensà. NOT reality: click on button and à. and à and à and ààààààààà. #fail) -Something better than EVEGate (This should probably be #1) - Text that isn't confined to a 10cm (4in) strip in the middle of a monitor that is 47cm wide (do your own conversion)
LetÆs face it. EveGate is full of functional issues that have yet to be addressed and you are creating a forum based on this?? IÆm not an idiot (yes there are ppl that dissagree w/ this) and IÆm not the type to rage-quit over anything. I just wonÆt use the forum feature. I only use EVEGate if something is pressing and IÆm expecting mail while IÆm OOG.
I assume your eventual goal for this is for all users to actually use forums? I rarely use them now as they are, in their current iteration, sh*t. The new and improved version is useless.
Unlike some of my fellow users, I really donÆt care about emoticons. Sure, nice to have but not really. I would love to have Smartphone functionality but that can wait as well.
I want simple, easy to use forums that work.
See what I did there. I just deleted most of the shiny bells and whistles that really shouldnÆt be there: eg. Massive Avatars, Borders, Cartoon like quotes, àà
How about an alternate style sheet for those that donÆt want all the other stuff? Keep the existing forums until you change them. This TEST is a #fail.
Nothing wrong with failing as long you are tryingà except you arenÆt 4 yrs old and IÆm not your parent

Both issues should be simple enough to address. Make font size and avatar size a user setting and write a simple script to take an SQL dump from one forum and migrate it into the right fields on the other. It takes a little bit of work and some testing, but if they're familiar with the forum software at all, it could be done and tested in a couple days.

I'm making the assumption that they might have written their own forum software, but that may not be the case. A decade ago, I needed forum software to cater to about 100,000 members of my site with busy forums and didn't like the options out there. Too complex, yet not featured enough. It wouldn't be fun picking through them and understanding how the 94 tables and 400 fields are related. Plus, none of them really offered threaded conversations (I don't understand why this is missing in so many forums?!) -- so I wrote something from scratch. It was a little bit of work, but the benefit was that it fit in perfectly with the site (I hate sites that make you create a separate account to log into their forums) and I could manipulate the data however I wanted and port it elsewhere with a simple shell script, when necessary.
I'm a little worried that they're just putting a pretty CCP/EVE style theme on PHPBB or InfoBBS or something. *sigh*

Use the same size portrait images as this forum.
If they let us tick a box to use small portrait size or medium/large whatever they call the size used there now I'd like it more.

I feel awful for even joking about this, because someone might actually follow up on the idea, but . . .
How about YOUR avatar is displayed bigger and bigger to other users, depending on the number of messages and the amount of "likes" you get? People like us get a little tiny 1x1 dot, while some of the beloved (or at least, the prolific) end up taking over 90% of the screen.

Its for exactly the same reason you cannot turn off auto portrait load in local chat (without tweaking around in the OS itself).
CCP spent some time programming avatars and are now shoving it in your face at all available opportunitys. Down to the point of impacting negativly on lag and user resources. BUT ITS PRETTYU!
CCP are like your mate who gets a couple of tattos of "indiginous/celtic/japanese bands" around his arm and leg, and then insist on walking around EVERYWHERE in shorts whatever the weather, holding his pint "just so" to dispaly the tatto in the right light whilst taking sneaky glances at himself in the reflection in the pub window.
You can keep your tats and you can keep your evegate.

That aside, I hope the history of posts within the outgoing forums will be preserved.

The current forums are something they threw together quickly half a decade ago in-house; it's archaic and mostly unknown to them these days, hence the lack of Search Feature and them making "new" forums.
Believe it or not, the new forums are also supposedly in-house-developed. It's not phpbb/infobbs or anything at the core at all. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

Try logging in to the "Test-Server" version of Eve Gate, here: http://test.evegate.com/ and select a character. Selecting the character is an important part of this that is easy to overlook.
Wrong Password/Username error, whut?
You have either recently changes your account password, and the "Test-Server" data set is still using your old information, or your account is new, and it does not exist on the current "Test-Server" build, at which point there is really nothing that can be done. It is also possible that your account was Inactive, in which case you might want to go to this thread and ask for a reactivation on Sisi.
Simply use your older password.
Okay, i'm logged in there, what now?

can you see a pattern here?
The new things don't work as well as the old ones?
Okay, the new forums might look better (even that's debatable with all the wasted space and grey-in-grey-in-dark-on-black) but have you tried actually using them? Most text formatting (eg size, color, code) not available, no "latest forum post" for a character ("error"), horrible speed (iow. "now you can lag on the forums too"), a lot of double posts (probably due to the performance issue) and lots of other issues.
It feels rushed, just to keep the deadline. And that's the pattern here: "good enough" instead of "really good".
Can't blame people if they don't fall for the poorly working, shiny stuff again and again and again.

Well I have to agree - it not only takes away valuable resources but there's plenty of excellently working examples out there already. Ones that even have polls!
But I guess the whole integration with EVEgate is one of the reasons they can't take standard solutions - those have to be adjusted as well so may just as well start from scratch. One could wonder what's the added value of EVEgate though, we still can't change our training queues in it for example.

Drop all the 'LOOKA ME WEB TWO POINT ZERO 2008' excessive padding, remove half of the scripts, cull the huge quotes etc. Might also want to just allow public access to caod before someone just starts scraping it to save effort/bans (at least I will w/e) PS.
