Seriously? Because I get the feeling that people drop out as endlessly as those that join (and those that rejoin).
It just seems like idiocy to me - people join the game because they think that it'll make them seem more intelligent or something.
What about for those of us that have lives and don't want to expend unecessary brain power on a game when it could be directed towards the real world? ----
Detailed explanations please.

Because unlike pretty much everything out there (except maybe minecraft) it provides near-absolute freedom.

No - People join the game because its different from the millions of Wow-clone MMOs out there and thats no exaggeration there are LOADS. All other MMOs that contain fruity coloured elves with fireballs eminating from their backsides, are just games with front - flashy visual affects to appeal to the brains of 9 year olds.
Eve is a breath of fresh air, since you actually get rewarded for intelligence. Same reason why ppl play chess, in a sense. Unlike other MMOs you dont sit their grinding from 1 to infinity. You have your fun and skill while you're even offline. I mean take something like pvp - In other games whoever is the highest level Mage with some rare 1000wtfbbq damage axe (obtained from months of raiding) will kill anyone. In eve you get rewarded for using your brain. Fit out your ship out of the millions of combinations, fly with skill, and reap the rewards. its just more immersive... What i'd like to know is whats the problem you're facing? Otherwise ppl will just assume you're a Wow fanatic who gets thrills from bright flashes and extasy-like colours.

Okay so... why do people play MMOs?

Played the game a while back and now I have a new hard drive. So I don't have any stuff to give, sorry.

There's a few games out there, already like this. Most of them are RTS or FPS though. :P
Quote: Otherwise ppl will just assume you're a Wow fanatic who gets thrills from bright flashes and extasy-like colours.
If I was a WoW zealot, I'd be behaving in a much more shallow manner.
It's funny because there's hot chicks that play WoW - and I actually find them less appealing, because they play WoW. o.0
Quote: Freedom is a very difficult thing to handleà
True... but then when there's too much freedom, players find that other players are actually limiting there freedom. Or the devs construct invisible walls. There's invisible walls in everything - I mean, they could at least provide a logical reason! Maybe with an actual wall. :P
I'm thinking specifically of fall out 3, really.
But eve gives a good enough reason though for the time being - stargates unactivated and all that.

If I ever feel like getting into this game again - I could start a corporation and you could invest. Then you'll get stuffs, I suppose.

Exactly not MMOs and certainly not as indepth as Eve. The intricate aspects of the game make it so unique. I can only guess you got bored of eve because you were endlessly doing missions or mining. There are plenty of other things for you to do - try infiltrating low sec, go into null sec and find a an empty spot you can rat so much isk. The challenging and enjoyable part is trying to get in risking getting killed but for reasons of great reward. Or if you wanna stick with pve go into wormhole space. The npc there aren't like average mission rats. The AI of Sleeper rats in wormhole will keep you on your toes all the time.... these are just a couple of things.

I must confess it's a bit sad that a lot of people really don't have anything better to do than play mmorpgs. And not just EVE, I mean any mmorpg that takes up more than 4 hours a week.

Eve is great, it gives you freedom to play in alot of different ways. Unlike many other mmos where it takes months of grinding to be useful, characters can be useful in weeks.
Theres no level grind, so even if you don't have much time you can increase your skills.
Isk can be gained passively as was well by manufacturing, trading, PI and playing markets.
There are so many ways to play that most people will enjoy at least a couple of them. My personal favorite is exploration. I even enjoy mining ice once in awhile.

"Why peole play MMORPGs ?" Dunno about you but I play because of the social aspect, granted getting "the social aspect" turned to "group effort" requires more in EVE but it's still a rewarding thing.

Players coming in and dropping out of EVE is just a natural thing, it is that way with all MMOs and games in general, and has imo nothing to with eve aside from the fact that EVE just isnt a game for everybody.
Something that appeals to me is the lack of endgame. All of the other games i know have an abrupt end to them, at some point you'll get max lvl and have all the gear you need, and then what? Something eve does right here is that you cant get "max lvl" theres always something new, something different to explore and its always in motion, keeping it playable for way longer then most other games.

This game gets boring after you find out how much time you have to put into flying different ships. And if you do fly a different ship, you have to wait until your other skills are at level 4s or lv5 to fit them properly. I know when my time is up, i aint coming back... Come up with something else besides, well this game is not for you, go play wow...blah blah blah. Come up with a solution where everyone can enjoy this game, not just the ones who have nothing else to do but wait.

Trick is to not just sit their in anticipation of a skill completing. The game is designed so that theres not that much emphasis on 'levels' and they player can do what they like for the purpose of enjoyment. While you skill do other things that you may enjoy, it doesn't always revolve around just the ship you fly. Group up with some friends, get in fleet and go roaming, do L5 missions, reek havoc in an inhabited c3 wormhole - these are just things i'm coming up with off top of my head.

You've got that the wrong way around: the ones who have nothing else to do but wait are the ones who won't enjoy the game.
The solution, as mentioned above, is to stop waiting and start doing something instead. Now, if you want a game mechanics solution to thatà well, good luck. Getting people's imagination going isn't really something that can be done through game mechanics. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

Join because it makes them seem move intelligent? To who exactly? EvE is the most embarrassing thing in my life (my guilty pleasure) so it is beyond my comprehension who would actually be playing solely so they look smarter. Can't imagine that working in the bars.
As for spending "unnecessary" brain power instead of being productive towards the real world I will explain my situation given that I am a solid eve player for almost a year now.
I work as a network consultant. I have a pretty cushy job and am payed to solve problems ALL DAY, EVERY DAY. ALL DAY I am analyzing information, piecing information together, building out sales strategies, testing different models, etc. The point is I don't have one of those jobs where at 5pm my worries are over. I am constantly thinking about work and it can get in the way of my relationship duties (ever been at a swingers club and all you can think about is how your ESX deployment's multipathing isn't working correctly?) Now one of the few things that I find that allow me to "turn off" from work is switching from analyzing technical information to playing something mentally taxing that is also pointless. So yes I spend an hour or two a day blowing up fake space ships and collecting tears. It is how I unwind from the day.
**One last thing, I find it AMAZING that you misspelled "unnecessary" when talking about brain power.

Quote: Exactly not MMOs
What's so attractive about MMOs? Meeting other people? Only then, they're actually just strangers who you blow up in virtual time. So, you might end up hating them as if they were NPCs - and you'll never meet them in real life.
Its just about as potentially competitive as a game like starcraft - where you also blow up strangers.
But... most MMOs aren't as competitive as starcraft. In Eve, you don't get to shoot people as often as a game like starcraft either. :P

Sorry, to children. Kids join because it makes them seem more intelligent. xD
And then they laugh at their friends for playing WoW or whatever. Because chicks dig nerds these days - it's in the media... or something.

Perhaps the test server would be the most fun place, considering you don't need to worry about skills. And if everything else is the same.
If more people are on the test servers than the actual 'official' server - CCP really should take the hint.

Garry's mod had a whole physics engine for people to play with. That got people's imaginations running. All because of the game mechanic.

It's been said already, EVE is not for everyone, and neither should it have to be. There's way too many MMOs trying to satisfy you, just go play one of those.
For those with (according to you no life), patience, half a brain, and (according to me) a sado-mazochistic nature, there's EVE, just go away before you get hurt, please.
Oh, and I figured out the answer to your, oh so difficult, question: "What about for those of us that have lives and don't want to expend unecessary brain power on a game when it could be directed towards the real world?"
All you weirdos with lives bla bla bla, have the option (hear ye hear ye) to NOT play that game, amazing isn't it?
Since it seems you haven't figured it out yet, here's a pro tip: You will have more fun playing the games you like, I swear!
Now go troll some other community

I enjoy a game that makes me think, leads me to a conclusion and then hands me back my head on a plate Start over and think again.
That's one of the nice things of Eve. Just one, there are many.
Nothing to do with having or not having a life.

Eve has depth. Their systems are very robust. People like this. Space flight is robust, skills are robust, combat is robust, the economy is robust, to name a few.
Eve has a nice social aspect in the form of corporations. Even in a npc corp theres people to talk to all the time. People like this as well.
