Hi there. New to this program but it seems others remember it. But i'l ask the question anyway.
Basic worry here. Ive downloaded a 3rd party program, given it access to the net and im now asked for my eve account and password? Not accusing you of anything but.. well im sure you get my point. ----- Eris Discordia; I think the proper term is <3

fair point :)
yes, you have to enter your account details, and no, you don't know what the CM does with them. unfortunately, there is currently no other way to implement a (user friendly) auto-download than is implemented due to myeve requirements.
The only advice I can give you is to not use the CM if you're not completely certain of our good intentions. The only case I can make is that CM has been around for almost 9 months now, with an ever growing userbase (last recorded max was somewhere between 9.000 and 10.000 downloads), with not a single complaint in this respect. Apart from that, the faq contains a list of the servers that CM connects to, so you could use a firewall to monitor it's behaviour.
But as I can't provide you with watertight evidence, ultimately you should be the one to decide..

Ok, thought it would proberly come down to that. Still consider me as a noob, putting you down as 100% trustworthy and the way the program works is secure, whats the risk of someone else hacking/intercepting stuff? ----- Eris Discordia; I think the proper term is <3

I did some sniff snaffing with my ubar l33t linux hackz0ring skills and checked out what this proggie does and it doesn't seem to do a POST of your acccount details to some kind of ebil Islay "server of omgwtfsaveallusernamesandpasswords so that I can hackz0r poor eve-players".

Edited by: Gantor Paxnor on 01/02/2005 23:14:18 Edited by: Gantor Paxnor on 01/02/2005 23:13:22 This app rocks, I took a month off the game when I found out I couldn't manage my skill training... but eventually came back and started manually updating my skills in the CM.
Now, a feature request, to make this extraordinary tool better:
I'd like to be able to put a set of skills into the queue, right click the queue and select "Optimize", the CM should then look at my Learning skills I've put in the queue (or others that I haven't yet put in, if it reduces the overall learning time), and order the skills in the right order.
I always wonder how much Focus level 3 is going to help my Heavy Assault [typo edit 1&2] progression, and while I can manually move skills up and down I think the optimize "button" would really make this tool awesome.
Kudos to Islay & t20

I don't know if putting Learning skills into the queue will affect subsequent items or not (ie: it looks at the skill queue in calculating the training time for a skill) but there is a window called 'What If' to the bottom right of the screen. Select a skill, and you can see how much increasing the primary or secondary attributes will help the training time of the skill.

Yes changing the order of learning skills changes how long the skills below it will take. The what if grid used to have a friend - the what if window, this window would show you what effects on the skill training time changing 1+ points in the primary and secodary skill would do... it was removed when adv skills came out....

Simple suggestion for CCP: Export the unalterable character data to a database that uses a separate password. - I'm not worried about EVE-I using the current vulnerable data.. but I am concerned about EVE-I's security. I can recall at least two mmogs that have had major breaches of client security, including creditcard numbers, in the past few years.
I take it that the security of the information is equivalent to the security of my own machine essentially and not some server owned by EVE-I that is protected by a commercial firewall that may or may not be regularly updated. However, I still don't know where this data is going and the fact that it is coordinated by a single piece of software looks like an additional security risk to me, though unintentional. The intarweb theoretically allows you to do all kinds of fun and interesting things with willing people. Tragically, it only takes one anonymous individual to abuse it in order to force all the rest of us to forego hoping for that cool thingie. Anonymity and privacy agreements suck like that.

I agree, I have been discussing this possibility on and off over the last few months. Just one point though regarding CM (if that is where your main concern lies atm), CM is not directly related to EVE-I, and your account details are only stored in an encrypted format on your own harddisk. None of this is transmitted anywhere (except when CM logs into myeve using https), so you won't find your details at EVE-I.

If it worries you so, install an application-level firewall with enough customization that you can restrict it to certain hosts, and then check out every outgoing connection that the program tries to make, and only allow those going to EVE's servers.
Hell, when I started using it, I did that, and even went as far as using a packet analyzer to read the data it was sending out. Was all clear on my version.
