Hello capsuleers, á CCP is pleased to announce the second Live Dev Blog in our series of three. This time we'll focus on the fiction and backstory of the EVE setting, and translating those stories into playable experiences.á á The Live Dev Blog on Fiction and Content in EVE Online will take place on March 8, 2011 at 22:00 UTC.á á For those who haven't heard, Live Dev Blogs are audio broadcasts from CCP heard in-game through EVE Voice. Live Dev Blogs give us a chance to talk a bit about what we're doing and let you get to know us better, while also getting some of your questions about EVE and CCP answered.á á CCP Soundwave will return as host for the Live Dev Blog on March 8, and we're changing up the format a bit this time around so we'll have two segments. CCP t0nyG (IP Development Manager, author of The Empyrean Age) and CCP Abraxas (Senior Writer, author of over half of the EVE Chronicles) will discuss their work and answer your questions for them.á á We'll also have a segment with the Content team, the people behind PvE in EVE Online and who've brought you Live Events in recent months. CCP Big Dumb Object (Content Developer) and CCP Headfirst (Associate Content Developer) will discuss what they do here at CCP, and of course we're sure you have some questions to ask them.á á So, let us know: á What would you like to hear CCP t0nyG and CCP Abraxas discuss in terms of the fiction and backstory of EVE? What would you like to know about the Immersion projectáat CCP, which aims to better mesh the lore of EVE into the game experience?á
What are you interested in hearing from CCP Big Dumb Object and CCP Headfirst in terms of their work in Content?á á Please let us know in this thread. You'll have until Wednesday, March 2 at 15:00 UTC to submit your questions before I close this thread and we prep for the next Live Dev Blog, so comment and ask away. á Players interested in listening to the Live Dev Blog on March 8 should join the Live Dev Blog channel in-game at 22:00 UTC, right-click on the channel tab, and select "Join Audio". Details about how to tune in to the Live Dev Blog on Fiction and Content in EVE Online will also be announced prior to the broadcast.á á -- Shadow

Q: What are the Jove up to? What's their reaction to the Sansha using their tech for the incursions?
Q: Will the rogue drones ever become more than floating minerals story wise?
Q: will incursions ever end? Or will they be expanded by adding incursions from other pirate factions (or other entities) ?
Q: Wormholes. Will the storyline in them have any greater relevance in the future other than archeological?
Q: Why is there only a progress in the EVE story a short time before, during and after the expansion but close to nothing between? Can't you add bits and pieces of what prominence does continiously?
Q: Will Factional warfare have ever a continuation in the story line or will it just go on and on without relevant news or influence on the story?
Q: Will you dare to have storyline events that can directly influence where the story of EVE will go?
Q: Ever thought about adding hidden stories events, low profile with little obvious effect on the immediate story only to coagulate some time later into something big, where players can play a significant role in the outcome, depending on what they did in the minor events? If yes, what was the result of your pondering?
Guess that should do from my side. --------

1) Question to t0nyG and Abraxas: Story style and good/evil divisions
While you two both write the EVE backstory, your styles differ at times rather drastically. This can best be seen by comparing the Empyrean Age novel with The Burning Life. While EA focuses on epic, larger-than-life stories with rather clear-cut good/evil divisions, TBL focuses on everyday life and does paint a much more grey picture of a dark universe in which no one is truly "good", but at best "tries to be good and fails".
Similar distinctions can be found when comparing other stories. For example, Theodicy even creates the idea of a large conspiracy theory "behind it all" in form the Dark Jovians who control the powers that be, while often other stories seem to imply that there is no greater plan behind it all - a mix of greed and "good intentions" creates a dark universe, and not a "larger power behind the scenes".
How do you two see the future of the EVE backstory? Will we see more "Shadows"-style "evil creatures" behind the scenes, will the story move more towards more clear-cut distinctions between good and evil, or will it move again back towards the dark universe of no "good" and "evil", only shades of grey?
(I, personally, much prefer a lack of clear-cut good/evil divisions; that gives much more power to the players to play and argue as believable characters without falling back to "evil overlord" charicatures.)
2) Story of books vs. story of the game
A game world setting creates a very special environment for stories. As we have 300,000 players in this world, it is pretty much impossible to create a believable, shared story in which "the player" is "the protagonist". This is distinctly different from normal book fiction as well as standard RPG adventures, as both of those strongly revolve around individual or small groups of protagonists.
In the EVE context, the difference can be seen by comparing certain missions. On one extreme, the poor Mr. Zor is being killed hundreds of times every day all over the galaxy, and trying to incorporate that into a story would require some things about unprecedented clone abuse or a large family of siblings. On the other extreme, you have regular pirate Blockades by Angels or other groups in various systems, where the only storytelling issue with busting them is to explain why the gate they blocked isn't accessible to everyone - easily glossed over in comparison to the Zor problem. In between those, you have missions where apparently the higher-ups of every corp in this galaxy have dozens of daughters that get constantly abducted and rescued. While not impossible, that kind of story easily loses credibility.
These problems are not restricted to missions. For example Incursions do tell a story that is believably happening for all capsuleers (awesome, really), and it works well. In factional warfare on the other hand, a similar approach showed some problems: In an attempt to prevent a few players to influence the story of everyone, the ability of players to influence anything in the story with this has been extremely limited.
What are the thoughts of the designers of EVE fiction on this? Are you going to ignore the "immersionist" requirements more and more for the sake of telling "good stories", or will we have to miss out on "good stories" to keep the game world believable?
Thank you!

This for God's sake. We're not private investigators that can see through every little detail to ascertain the truth 8 hours a day for a job. We're bloody gamers, we've taken every scrap we could find from WH space and tried t toss it out there but all we get are cryptic messages. We can't even dare to go out on a limb because we've become so entrenched in finding solid evidence that might not even be there that we can't further the story of the Sleepers as Dropbear once commented he is waiting for.
The players must make a consensus on the Sleepers before it can be moved forward? My ass. Give us a damn hint!

One thing that I'd argue is important with interactive storytelling is that players can see what they changed. In the live events this was done clearly, with regards to things like SlaveHeavenbound and gravemetric ECM destabilizing wormholes. However, it's been said that players can also interact with the Sleeper story in wormhole space, that we 'propel the story forward'. In what way do you give feedback to the players that this indeed occurs in the Sleeper storyline so that they know they've interacted with it, and that it has interacted back?
It's also been stated that much of the story in Eve has been fleshed out allready for the years to come. Does this pre-determined story ever get in the way of what actually happens in Eve, for instance, during the live events, and if so, is it an option at all to change the pre-determined story?
to CCP T0nyG: In the Empyrian Age, it was said that this is to be an age of the capsuleer, an Empyrian age. But the book doesn't seem to go into much detail as to why that conclusion was reached. A lot of the key characters in the story are not capsuleers, and apart from the Broker, capsuleer technology did not seem to have such a major impact on the story as to reach that conclusion. So why do you, as the writer, feel that the capsuleers would be seen as to really dominate the fate of Eve? Don't the capsuleers mostly keep to themselves?

This.
See the roughly 60 pages on it in the two massive threadnaughts in the Eve Fiction forum for details.
Sleepers Rogue Drones Enheduanni The Broker Wormholes as time travel devices Talocan C3 implications of Jita 4-4 Chron Why there are not 10 Shattered planets How the Sansha open targeted wormholes Why isn't there a ruined station at Roua 10-2 Sanctuary and SoE involvement Validity of The Seyllin Report as canon vs fanfic
That should give you a good start.

Id like to hear about stuff related to Incarna. Like:
Whats actually happening between docking and appearing on the balcony? To do this fast, it would seem you changed something from the previous Incarna teaser.
If we die outside the pod, what happens?
Can we access stuff via our implants wirelessly? Or is a hard wire connection the only option? And if hard wired only, are not those skin penetrations just routes for infection, or make horrid bloody messes if a wire gets pulled the wrong way?
What other fiction and content is being added concerning pods, pilots, implants, and so on so that our new Incarna experience all fits with the current flying in space experience we have now?

Question 1: There is a story saying that players might be able someday to evolve into Jove - has this idea been abandoned completely or there is still such a possibilty.
Question 2: Will New Eden wormhole to milky way galaxy ever play any role other than just being out there and being mysterious?
Question 3: Will Ammatars join Minmatars someday?
Question 4: When will Gallente kick Caldari back from Caldari prime? New president seems to be very anti-caldari and as a lot of time has passed (so Gallenteans in caldari space had plenty of time to get back to Federation) since the beginning of the Empyrean Age - a lonely titan shouldn't be much of a challenge for a best-equipped military fleet in EVE (Federation Navy). Foiritain could not retaliate when it started... but now?
Question 5: Will Jove space be ever open for public? Not being able to be jove is one thing but i see no reason for not letting people do missions for Jove and to be able to fly their ships (just make them expensive - like 2bil for the frig??). Also Jovian agents are not Jove at all. Can it change?
Question 6: Will there be any more Epic Arcs? You started with 5 very promising arcs and many people are hungry for more.

I would like them to discuss the darker sides of the various factions in the backstory. Some are painted in very stark black or white terms, with little grey areas. Yet chronicles mention there is a lot going on that is not always visible. Things like how the Gallente Federation talks a lot about freedom and democracy, but has secret agents doing very illegal, and undemocratic things. More stuff like that would be good.
I would like to know about how the Immersion project will appear ingame, e.g. if showinfo brings up wiki links on things, and if the various pieces of mission dialogues, object descriptions, and all the other little pieces will all feature, because that stuff is nice to read about.
For the content team, I would like to know about how many ideas they have for missions and things they have, and how many don't work out for whatever reason. I'd like to ask if future live events will cover other groups and factions, especially little known ones like the Equilibrium of Mankind. I'd like to know if they have any plans for smarter, tougher, but fewer in number npcs to appear in future PVE things. I'd also like to know if the older PVE like Cosmos can be reworked into the Epic Arc format, so you can replay it if you want. I'd like to know if the other pirate factions will eventually have epic arcs too.

Question to CCP Shadow:
This time around are your speakers going to be briefed to the questions? I'd like to see better responses than "um... we'll get fired if we answer that question."
Question for the content devs:
What's up with COSMOS? Will they ever be iterated on? Will they ever be molded into a cohesive story, rather than just a way to spam up your faction standings? Will the cost/effectiveness of the BPC rewards ever be adjusted to make them useful and worth building and selling?
What's up with the space junk proliferation a couple expansions ago? Why was development time spent on that when it was probably the least useful thing to do to improve player experience? (I have yet to even see the results of this even after all this time.)
Will epic arcs ever be expanded on to be usable as a primary income source? A huge number of rookies ask what they are supposed to do after the first epic arc. Can we expect anything to integrate epic arcs into the rest of the game?
The nature of the game mechanics break up the flow of the stories told in epic arcs, COSMOS missions, and other agent sources making them almost impossible to follow. (After years of playing, doing Minmatar and Gallente COSMOS missions twice each, and doing the rookie epic arc, I still have no idea what the stories of any of them are about.) Are any tools in development to blend the storytelling into the game mechanics more effectively than has been?
At last year's fanfest there was a player suggestion about dividing mission distribution based on the NPC's corp in a way that makes a lot more sense. For example faction navies have more faction missions, other corps having fewer, creodron having lots of rogue drone missions, etc. Is that idea dead, or can we expect a revamp of the agent system?
Missioning is a primary income source for quite a lot of the players. What changes can we expect to make this process more fun and engaging?
A few expansions ago a lot of low quality agents were duplicated and dumped into unusable space. What was the purpose of that and has it had the results you expected?
Can we look forward to more variety in incursion sites? Can we look forward to some intermediate difficulty incursion training sites to more effectively teach people how to fly in fleets?
With the Immersion Project, will the jumping on points lead us into a cohesive understanding of the story, or will it be more like a wikipedia style series of articles? Will it be reasonable to jump in on the stories while doing something else such as traveling or missioning or station spinning, or will it require dedicated time out of game with focused reading?
There are a lot of players who are highly interested in learning the story, but find grinding through out-of-game resources like the chronicles and other story sources distracting from their actual game time. How will "breadcrumbs" be used to draw players into the Immersion Project in a way that will add value instead of being ignored as a time consuming distraction?
What other "breadcrumbs" are in the works to bring players to different parts of the game, helping form a more cohesive whole?
The story and content teams have more power than anyone else in the company to bring richness to the user experience of more people. I hope you rise to the occasion.

if yes then why don't they distort space like the eve gate?
if not? are they made by jovian?
why have the sleepers not invaded our space?

I thought this was pretty well known... the sleepers are all remote controlled drones and the ones further away from their home systems (i.e. in class 1 or 2) are dumber and weaker. Another galaxy or universe entirely would put them completely out of control range.

I would like to know what on earth is going on with the Jove. Will they help the other races in destroying the sansha for a second time? Considering they are using their tech and all. lol
And if the Angels can get their tech why how come players cant get some of their own?
Are they going to appear at any point. Or are they just in hibernation or bored with watching the other four races infighting?

I agree. As a relatively new player I have had a very hard time locating basic information about the races and bloodlines that would help me RP my character better. Information seems scattered across forums, evelopedia, eve-wikis, etc. One centralized, searchable database of some sort would be ideal.
Also, from a roleplay "immersion" standpoint, how do you explain names like "Big Dumb Object"?
