What is the difference between the two? The only difference I see in them is the CPU needs, but everyone seems to use the Expanded version which uses 10x more CPU. Surely there is a reason for that. Which one would I need to use for scanning down other players?

For scanning down players in open space you need the expanded probe launcher.
For scanning down players that are running plexes or anomalies that can be probed the core probe launcher is sufficient. Say you are after a guy that is running sanctums in nullsec, find his distance with directional scanner, drop a core probe to get all the sites, and judge by distance which one he is in.

Only core scanner probes fit in the little one.
The other 3 types (combat, deep space, survey(moons)) do not.

The Expanded Probe launcher uses alot more CPU as well (Stating the obvious ofc)

I can't live without the deep space scanner probe which requires the expanded launcher as it lets you figure out in seconds if a system is worth bothering to waste time using combat or core probes to find something interesting. Core probe launchers are nice in that pretty much any ship can fit them if they have a utility high slot so you can go find and run wormholes with just your drake or stick one on your gank bc or tackler to go wormhole raiding or busting anomalys.

The Expanded Probe Launcher, despite having higher CPU Usage, is much better than the Core Probe Launcher. It can fit mroe probes and is compatible with more types of probes, for one thing. |
