Edited by: NightmareX on 02/03/2011 13:41:22 Ok, i will just post why you should't buy an iPhone 4.
Simply, look here: http://theiphonefever.blogspot.com/p/idont-list.html
Some few of those things in that list is probably fixed now though, but around 90-92% of the points there are still valid.
So if you really want to get a phone that is EASY TO USE for those badly things in the list, then go on.

I have a HTC desire and like it.
My father got a Samsung and it's a terrible. As easy as the HTC desire is, so complicated is that phone. Don't recall the specific phone though.

Sigh, yea. And still iPhone is a success, which is certainly beyond my understanding.
You know. I think I will just ask her what she thinks are best. She might be suspicious, but at least she will get a darn phone she would like!
Thanks all!

A day were someone is saved from apple is a good day. Demand quality when you spend so much resources on your phone.
Now, if apple actually put some real effort behind their stuff, and combined their designs (designs that actually are OK) with actual good hardware and functionality... then it might be worth it. So far they have not succeeded.
Used to be you were "creative" if you used apple products and macs, now its just a fashion thing. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gentlemen, the question wasn¦t which is the better phone. It was: What should he give his girlfriend?
So let¦s look at the worst case scenarios: If she is the fashion victim type, interested in obedience and confirmity with the flock, you can give her an smartphone with an AI that passes the turing test, powered by a tiny fusion reactor that lasts 1000 years and covered in transparent aluminum and she will be disappointed that it is no iPhone4. If the is the technically interested "nerdy" type and you give her an iPhone. She should appreciate that you spent a lot of money for the most overpriced piece of crap you could find with a nice resale value (at least until the next model comes out). This is not so far away from what a diamond ring is.
So, choosing an iPhone looks for me like a win/win situation.

You're assuming an awful lot. The fashion type might not be an apple girl. The conformity is always to the circle she hangs around with, so she might just as well be an apple hater. Buying her an iphone is a huge mistake.
The nerdy type might not appreciate your gifts any more than the fashion girl. Buying her an apple can just as well disapoint her, show her how different you really are from her and how badly you have bothered to get to know her. Buying her an iphone can be a huge mistake.
Point being you buy it for the person and the OP is really the only one in a position to predict her reaction. If he really doesn't know what she likes or what the reaction will be, FFS tell her you've been thinking of getting her a phone and you'd like to let her decide the actual model she likes the best. If she doesn't have a favorite in mind, he can advice her about the differences between the phones and show that he can be a useful guy to have around.

Well, going smartphone shopping with her on her birthday where she can try everything and decide what she likes best is not the dumbest idea

Having been in a similar position (daughter wanted a smartphone and asked for advice) I explained all smartphones have pro's and con's then went on to suggest she checks out a good android phone as well as the apple varieties. Advice completely ignored and she got an iphone without even glancing at the androids. Therefore I suggest an iphone.
There is no reason why or why not, the iphone is the best phone, it has the wi-fi's...

Not too bad an idea. However, I had also planned a candlelit dinner, music I dont listen to, some flower and the present.. Heck! I am even doing the cooking!
My girlfriend have today a Nokia phone. I know she is not too happy about it. Mainly because in the lack of style and its not a smartphone either. And yes, she is... fashion handcuffed, mainly by her friends it seems.

I'm an iPhone fangirl. My mom isn't techno savvy and it's the first phone she's gotten that she doesn't have 20 questions about. Android phones you need to be a little techno savvy to use them. When Android phones first came out I recall meeting someone running late for a class on how to use her phone.

Ask her on what she's gonna use the mobile phone for. If she's the more advanced type of phone user, then go for the HTC Desire HD.
If she only want to do easy things like watching YouTube, write SMS / MMS / E-Mail, listen to Spotify or something like that, then an iPhone 4 will be good enough.
If she's an user that want to change the homescreen and wants to have more options in the OS. And if she wants a phone where you aren't 100% dependent on computer programs like iTunes and a PC all the time she want's to add a mp3 file or any other multimedia files. Then the HTC Desire HD will be a much much better choice.
But please, let her know about the things i said earlier about iOS 4 / iPhone / iTunes and the BAD things with it. And ask her if she want that.
If she doesn't like iTunes for that, it's going to be a disaster for her if she gets an iPhone 4 then.
When you are buying an iPhone 4, you automactily have to like iTunes and it's stupid things. So, if you don't like iTunes and that, you are most likely not gonna like the iPhone 4 either.
I have used iPod Touch + iTunes for over a year and i know what kind of pain in the ass that **** can be from time to time.
