or, An Informal, Unscientific Poll Using Brutish Methodology And Teh Facebooks For The Purposes Of Self-identification And Lolz
After having this conversation many times in many places, I decided to ask the EVE Facebook Crowd the following question:
"If you could fly JUST ONE SHIP in EVE, what would you pilot?"
You can find all the answers here.
Since there was a pretty overwhelming amount of responses (812 comments at the time of this writing), I simply had to carpe the opportunity to do some old fashioned counting and cogitating on it. I'm here to share some findings.
Before that though, I must note the following:
- I didn't count up all the "Likes" of individual responses. I may be crazy but not insane.
- In cases where people provided multiple answers, I tried to discern their top choice. If it was just a list, I defaulted to the first mention, assuming the id of the poster pushed it to their fingertips first because of some innate preference
The crowd Favorite, tripling second place with around 120 votes, was the MIGHTY OSPREY. Just kidding, nobody put that.
The real title goes to the Tengu, with 42 (bonus points to those who know why that is an important number in EVE).
I am Jack's complete lack of surprise.
First place loser was the Nyx, which received many remarks on its beauty and power, followed closely by the Machariel, Hurricane, Legion (my fav), Rifter, Drake, Vagabond, Loki, Proteus and Rattlesnake. In that order.
Tech 3? Clearly popular. Right in the middle of those was a mix of "a jove ship" which I combined with Eidolon.
I'll put the complete list below, for the curious... but here are some more factoids/truthasms.

- Navy Frigs: Silver or Gold Magnates
- Pirate Frigs: no Daredevil or Succubus
- Regular Frigs: Half the Caldari frigs, all the Amarr, Minnie and Gallente except for the Magnate, Rifter, Incursus and Tristan
- Anything we've ever given away as a mass promo (except the Interbus Shuttle) Primae, Apotheosis, Echelon, Zephyr**
- Transport Ships: Caldari, Minmatar
- Shuttles: all but the Minmatar Shuttle
- Standard Industrial Ships: everything but the BADGERBADGERBADGER and the Mammoth
- Mining Barges, Logistics, non-stealth-bomber CovOps Frigs (Buzzard etc) and Destroyers. Yep, not a single one
- Hulk smash! But Hulk also lonely as there were no other Exhumers
- Interdictors: Only le Sabre. Buick must be proud.
- Electronic Attack Frigs: Hyena, Keres
- Navy Cruisers: All but Guardian Vexor, Stabber Fleet Issue and Vexor Navy Issue
- The Enyo was the only missing Assault Ship, Phobos the only mising Heavy Interdictor and Fenrir the only missing Freighter
- The Rhea was the only Jump Freighter
- Few people like regular cruisers... missing were the Arbitrator, Augoror, Celestis, Exequror, Moa, Scythe and Stabber
- HACs: Eagle and Zealot. The Zealot really surprised me...

It was also pretty interesting to see the hints dropped for desired faction BSs and BCs that don't exist. Also, there were some people who simply desired the epeen of owning and flying a Titan. One person voted for "anything not Caldari", while many many people seem to like the Scorpion, Black Widow, Rattlesnake model.
Fewer people (8) wanted to fly the GM ships than I thought wouldà and more people (4) were apparently content to fly around in a pod. Rookie ships got some nods, with the Ibis leading the charge at 11.
Somebody put down ôVeldsparö, I am assuming that is Chribba.

The only question I have is: What is CCP going to do with this info? I am fully aware that it is far from being a decent survey / scientific poll, but it's common knowledge that some ships are highly popular while some are barely used at all.
I really hope there will be either new ships or graphic/stats revamp of some ships down the pipe. I'd really like some texture/model upgrades to most ships (especially caldari) like you did with the scorpion model.
Also having some faction/T2 options for BCs and BSs that don't have any (Tier2 BC and Tier3 BS) would be great.
My 2 cents.

Surely a better question that would get a more focused answer would be:
If you were solely doing PvP in Eve, what would be your ship of choice?
because that would direct more to a singular profession (missioner,pirate or null-sec resident)
The next question would be directed at the profession rather than at the ship so;If you were solely doing [insert your chosen profession] in Eve, what would be your ship of choice?
I wonder how different the answers would have been

No, I like that ship a lot, but I CBA to respond to Facebook polls that are just duplicates of countless identical n00b threads from the EVE-O forums.
In fact, I was rather annoyed at the waste of space on my FB feed and almost unfriended CCP for spamming me like that.

Honestly think I agree with Manifest, Legion is the ship I would most like to fly because it's the sexiest ship in the game by far. I have not yet flown it but I will soon :D
Have to have the best ship I have flown so far is a close fight between the Zealot, Harbinger and Absolution (excluding my Thanatos)....just something about lazers I really enjoy :)

The only sensible answer is tech3 really. If you're going to be stuck in a single ship all the time it needs to be as versatile as possible. Legion gets my vote.

I'm betting more then a few people would grin if they saw a nod to the great space turtle of Terry Pratchets creation some where in eve.. and not understanding that.. if you don't want to read the books go hire the DvD's of Hog Father, The Colour of Magic (And the Light Fantastic but they merged the two into one book edit: ah.. movie.. apparently books go in the dvd player now!) and Going Postal.

It surprised me a little that this was not caught by CCP Manifest - he never ever read a Terry Pratchett book and also did not find or ask someone about it.

This line made me laugh and realize how small this survey actually is.

1. More than 3 of the t1 cruisers are weak / purposeless.

Maybe the player-base is trying to tell you something here. (Hint: The only T1 frigs worth flying are the Rifter, Merlin, Kestrel, Punisher, Incursus and maybe Tristan. Everything else is a glorified shuttle).

Another hint from the player-base here. The Tier system ruins half the Navy cruisers. Only the SFI, Vexor Navy, Navy Omen and navy Caracal are remotely close to useful.

No seriously, Favorite Ships so my feeling are changing everytime a change has been made either to weapons or the Ships at all, Currently it maybe the Tengu and some Piratefaction BS and the Supercaps, but i guess soon when CCP decides to make other changes they will get avoided and changed to other FOTM.
I myselfs try not to Specialize on one Shipclass or Race just to be prepared for any further incoming changes CCP may bring in the future *grinses*
Anyways, most important is having fun with the ships you fly is the biggest point to have, Fly save everyone and have fun o/

The Phantasm.
One of the coolest looking ship in the game.
Great for rocking out and stabbing other ships IN THE FACE.
And only two people want to fly it.

This isn't statistics. This is a poll where the only useful data is "how would someone answer this question" and not really reflect how people actually play the game. It kind of falls in line with the real statistics which you can see in the QEN snapshots. The least flown ship class in the game is the EAF, with significantly fewer active pilots in them than in titans. The single least flown ship in the game is the Scythe Fleet issue with I think it was 3 pilots in the game. Both pieces of information are reflected in the poll, but the poll itself shows social data, not real data. It is kind of embarrassing that CCP felt the need to do a player poll (of a minority group on facebook) to try and collect information they have 100% control over. :S

I'd definitely fly a Tengu, I'm getting quite attached to mine and I'm considering getting a few more just because they're so nice! If they'd only be a little faster (or Snake stuff a bit cheaper) they'd be perfect!
