Edited by: Trauts on 02/02/2005 01:50:35 Ive been playing around with scan probes a little bit. Hope this helps.
1. buy lots of probes, u need 3 minimum to do a scan.
2. ull need a probe launcher.
3. have a friend leave a shuttle at the best safespot they can make. (droping the shuttle yourself is cheating) (u can only scan for ships and pos i think hence the shuttle and not a cargo can)
4. try to find the shuttle on your scanner from a planet, gate, or station. zero in on the ship with the directional scanner and start trying to make bookmarks close to the shuttle.
5. the idea is to make a triangle around the shuttle making sure each bookmark is within your probes scanning range of the shuttle. (scanner goes up to about 2,100,000,000 km, which is about 15 au i think, so if u have 12 au scan probes u need to get the bookmarks within about 1,600,000,000 km of the shuttle)
6. launch 1 scan probe at each of the bookmarks (move fast as each probe has a limited life span)
7. on your scanner click on the 3 scan probes listed while holding ctrl so that they are all selected
8. scan (takes 5 min)
9. if u got the distances and triangle thing right ull get results for each shuttle in the scanned area
10. if u are using 12 au or longer range probes use the coordinate from the scan to make a smaller triangle and repeat scan with shorter range probes. when u scan with the 3 au probes ull get a warp point within about 100 km of the target.
Hints and Theories:
-if the fleet ur scanning for had 17 bs and u scan for battleships u should get 17 warp points for your result. assume uve gotten your own bookmarks around the fleet at 10 au. u scan with 3 12au probes and get 17 warp points from the scan. all of these points are within about 2 au of the enemy fleet, but are all 2 au in different directions meaning theres probably several combinations of points you can use to drop 3au probes at and nail them without having to make your own bookmarks midwarp and such. -i cant use the system scan probe but if it works the same way as the shorter range probes do it seems to me that it will be much easier to hunt down several ships of the same type at a safespot than it will be to hunt down a single ship.
note: if your enemy is paying attention during all this they are gonna be long gone as soon as they see probes in their scanners. could be fun to set up a trap at a safespot as well if u see your enemy scaning for u. |
