So I bought my first Amar ship, fitted it all up, then went shopping for ammo for the guns. I looked up the damage type to deal with Guristas, since they are the pirates most common around where I'm located, and I noticed that the only damage they are very vulnerable to is Kinetic.
Now for my question: Am I being stupid here, or are Amar ships at a serious disadvantage against Guristas because their ammunition types only deal EM and Thermal damage?

i thought guristas were weak to thermal and something else. yes lasers are kind of a ***** to PVE in since some of the Factions are good against EM / thermal such as Angel Cartel..

No, you are right. Amar has a problem against Guristas.
Most damage with Laser you get by using Multifrequenz crystals as they have the largest THERM damage (Guristas are 75% kin, 25% therm).
If you don't fly a BS use one of the Khanid ships (Vengeance, Sacrileg, Curse for excample) with rockets/HAM/drones. For BS size ships the Amageddon with it's drones is a good option as long as you can't fly a Paladin (a Paladine does so much damage, that it doesn't matter anymore *g*).
Best option is to switch to other NPC like Sanshas, Bloodraider, Serpentis.

Lasers aren't particularly good against Serpentis ù you want to use kinetic weapons against them, just like against the Guristas.

You'll find that in most case the local pirates for a faction space are always going to be vulnerable to the weapons of that region..
For example Caldari deal Kinetic vs Guristas. Amarr deal EM / Thermal vs Sanshas.

Guristas, Caldari State and Angel Cartel are almost immune to your damage. I think mordeau legion (?) also have some em-thermal resists but it doesn't feel like you are shooting blanks at them at least.

I've lived in Gallente space for about 3-4 years doing missions with them from an arbitrator to a paladin. Serpentis die just fine to lasers.

PvP and Amarr isn't any better. PvP Abbadon fit uses Artillery.
Artillery fit Prophecy works well too. The ships are fine, the guns suck. |

Amarr are at a disadvantage when facing angels/guristas/serps. On the other hand they completely slaughter bloods/sanshas as not only do they have the right damage type, they are armour tankers.
They aren't really any more disadvanteged than anyone else, hybrids high damage ammo sucks v angels, kinetic bonused cal ships suck vs bloods/sanshas. Still you are best finding a ship that isn't disadvanteged at all (hello raven) if you plan on fighting diff npcs.

More like they have 30% kin resist and 40% therm resist (and up, but the 10% diff stays roughly the same), not alot in it.

/ Offtopic slightly.. Check some of the recent NC vs Russian KBs, and look at the abaddon setups. Yes, we have been using Arty on both side, as Alpha is king (You'd be amazed how quickly ships drop to arty fire, even with Logis) Some setups still use close range lasers...

But if you have no choice, make sure you use MF crystals for hitting them since they do most thermal damage (wich is best vs them). So either fit an AB with pulse, or fit beams with a tracking computer.
