I am training to get my alt into an Ishtar for ratting and sanctums. Is the Ishtar better with heavy drones or sentry drones? or both?

heavies are very slow to get into action, so while enemies are closing by it's best to pull out the sentries and let them shoot approaching ships since they don't need much tracking for that. after they are close you let the heavies out. but still meds are sometimes better since they waste less time getting to their target.

Honestly depends on your skills and your attention span
Max Skilled Sentry Drones tend to not have to worry about moving from target to target however do about 10-20% less DPS.
Spec 4 (it's rare people have it to 5) Heavy Drones do more but moving from BS to BS unless they are in close range tends to not be the best result.
I personally use Garde II's with an omni directional tracking link but that's because I'm lazy.
I'm pretty sure Heavy drones + 2 Navigation (the drone speed ones) would be better for the people who like to play with more DPS also you can add some guns if you need the extra dps.

Sentries, no question. Use Garde IIs with 2x T1 Sentry Damage Augmentor rigs.

Thank you for the response. I see the point in using sentries over heavies, the moving from target to target. I will try both and see what happens. To point me in the right direction can someone share a fit for the Ishtar with me?

this!
variations: 3 Omnidirectionals small remote armor repairer 3 hardeners instead of damage control

my tactic with sentries: warpin at max range of sentries, deploy drones and order fire, throw something out of your cargo (1 ammunition,...whatever, orbit Jetcan, keep close orbit until aggro is clear, if drones get aggro, remote rep (watch your cap carefully) or pull them in, throw them out again, when you have full aggro, activate afterburner and set orbit to 2.500 or 5.000 (watch out for aggroed drones, cause you are to far-off to pull them in) |

^^ That. On paper, heavies might look like they do more damage, but as mentioned, that's without including the travel time of the dronesà
àand it's without including the fact that sentries can get a substantial boost from rigs, whereas heavies cannot. With those rigs is place, the only reason to ever use heavies is if you're fighting angels or (possibly) mercs ù fast-moving short-range ships that orbit closer than the sentries can track them.
I say "possibly" about the mercs, because you want to use Gardes against them, which means you're deploying the best-tracking sentries and you're using the right damage type, so chances are they won't be able to get that close before dying horribyà And since we're talking about ratting and sanctums, mercs aren't particularly relevant anyway. Angels are slightly different since you'd want to use Bouncers against them, but bouncers don't track very well so those rats can actually cause enough of a problem that you want to use Berserker insteadà
àof course, that's assuming you are flying around close to your sentries ù it's not particularly hard to put your ship some distance away from the drone drop point, and suddenly those Bouncers can hit just fine. On the other hand, Berserkers are fairly fast for heavies, so it evens out regardless. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

Ive always thrown 2-3 drone nav computers in the mids for sanctums. They are easy enough to tank and watching your Ogres do 2k m/s between targets is priceless. If you are doing something that requires you to be more cap stable/or moving such as 10/10 plexes go with sentries and beefy tank.
