Edited by: Ciphero on 18/03/2011 10:23:32 Back in t'day, Eve genuinely did have a more mature community than many other MMO's (the big bad WoW chief among them), probably due to the inherently steep learning curve. The kids and denser members of society were turned away by the game itself, unwilling as it was to compensate for their short attention spans and the short planks that they were as thick as. Eve is now 8 years old, and has (quite rightly) opened itself up to a greater audience - 10,000 online is no longer remotely noteworthy, let alone an event everyone gets excited about.
The downside to this wonderful growth is that that maturity in the community has gone. That's fine - that puts the Eve community on the same level pegging as other MMOs. What other MMOs generally don't do, however, is look down their noses with undeserved arrogance and smugly proclaim that they're different. Over in Eve, you can read about the "WoW kids" in every other thread, two posts below "lol jew ***" being considered a worthy reply.
Be immature, be childish, be embarrassing. Don't pretend you're better.

Apart from an increase in phrases like "jewing it up" (which frankly I find offensive and I'm not Jewish), the forums are much the same as they were in 2003-2005. No better, no worse.
There's just a lot more alts trolling now.

I don't find the phrases offensive as such (I might if I were Jewish, who knows), I just find them in stark opposition to the way some players seem to portray the community as a whole. |

Well the first time someone told me that Eve had a "better community" than most MMOs I laughed.
When Eve won some community award I actually wrecked a keyboard as I laughed so hard I spilled hot tea all over it - it never recovered from that even after cleaning
With very few exceptions the Eve (forum) community are a shower of ********s you WOULD cross the street to avoid talking to.
I seem to remember the same being true in 2003 - Miner2 drama anyone?

Answering your question: no, we can't stop it. We must compensate for the fact we are a little gang of devoted freaks nobody has ever ehard off outside of MMORPG world, whereas our only real competitor (as non-franchised MMORPG) happens to be like 20 times larger and is made by a company like 10 times bigger than ours.
Provided the difference, we and our company perform better than they do, but they are big and we are small and that will never ever change as long as we are who we are.
We are proud to be kings of the molehill and deserve to laugh at the real king if we as much as we feel like doing it. We are no threat to them and they are no threat to us.
And of course, they suck a lot.*
*PS: I had an idea to compare graphics by posting two pics altogether, one EVE's and other WoW's, but as each time that I undertake to look for "cool" images from WoW, I've grown appalled very quick at the garbage some companies throw their consumer's way. For Jove's sake, how can WoW graphics SUCK so much!?!? Not just the avatars (ROFTL!!!), everything is stuck somewhere back in the 90s! Talk about quantity versus quality...

Thats the reason why we have quality instead of quantity, in game, in teh comunity, choose where :-P
In fact, we are better, i've played WOW for a time, it never happend that there were 10 mature guys sitting in front of the computer on vent, and talking about world politics (ok there were some "stick it in your pooper" comments), but at a normal amount.
I'm pretty sure if there would be a Statistics on how many percent of the playerbase are idiots, we would get the lowest number.

Don't forget the mandatory "sandbox", "player driven economy" and "2 expansions each year". Blizzard really does lose a lot of sleep over it.

I've never seen the expression "HTFU" in any other game's forum, it's a typical EVE abbreviation.
For the rest; agreed with the OP. But it's a common phenomena that people who are member of a country/sports club/community/religion to think they're better/smarter/superior than others. EVE players aren't any different.

I would say that the community is better due to more sophisticated verbal (literal) abuse. I mean we are equally "stupid", but we explain it better. I mean a person over twenty has a better vocabulary and understanding of what he/she is ranting about. Also the rants are just better.
In wow you have most ten year olds that have get a fit from anything. Even if they wouldn't play wow. Their reaction is "stuff this in your pooper" and it's just verbally boring. They aren't rants, they are spam!
I mean when they say "_ _ _" (the minority of sexuals) we might say "Hey, you brownholeknight aviator!". Same stupidity, but with a finesse :)

Edited by: James Tiberius Kirk on 18/03/2011 13:26:14 Most mature people left EVE long ago, remaining are trolls, wannabe trolls, forum extraordinaires/celebrities, chribba and bots. Guess which group of people are posting, if reading at all.
Ever wonder why forums are 3 times less active than it was 4 years ago?

Quote: Can we stop the "Lol <other MMO>'s community sucks compared to ours"?
No.
The maturity isnt gone. There are just more people. More people means more (vocal) jerks and attention *****s. However, people only have a limited amount of time and attention. This means they get more extreme to stand out in the flood of bad posts.
You are reminiscing about what it was like with only 10k online and so few active on forums that you all could get your attention needs met.
It is different now. Attention is spread thin. Ton of new players dont know you. You feel like a lost nobody in a sea of uncaring trolls.
However, the community still has some very useful qualities. As for the forum, there is just so much more **** per useful post...
