The Shader Model 3 requirement will be for all of EVE Online. The Incarna expansion will need Shader Model 3 but one of the changes we are currently working on, and will be detailed later, will require Shader Model 3 everywhere.
Okay

Originally by: Nate719 Is there plans to still allow sm2.0 and lower? I currently play on a POS laptop. Can't afford a upgrade yet and wouldn't like missing out on the wonderful life of Eve... can't really replace a GFX Card from a laptop so your vendor deal will cover probally 50% of the subjected 9,000 people.
In the next point release then Shader Model 2 will continue to work, even if not officially supported, but you may find that parts of the Character Creator and/or Character Recustomisation may be inaccessible. In some point release thereafter then Shader Model 3 will become the minimum working requirement.
First you state an upcoming feature that is everywhere (by this, I want to assume you actually mean spaceships and space) will require Shader Model 3 but..
Then you say the only features that will be have a Shader Model 3 requirement is crap dealing with new character creator and that at some *Uncertain* point in the future Shader Model 3 will be standard for the whole game.
Which is it?
Both; there is no inconsistency in what I said.
In Incursion 1.4 (on 5 Apr) then some of the features of the Character Creator and in particular some the features of new Character Recustomisation will be inaccessible if using a Shader Model 2 card. At some point in the very near future, exact date still to finalised, then we will deploy a technology change / framework update, not a feature, that will require Shader Model 3 everywhere.

SM3 is not a big deal. It really is 8 year old technology. If you bought something in the last couple years with outdated technology, I can empathize. However even intel integrated graphic cards have been beyond that for several years. That is pretty much as low end as you can get.
Eve is really easy to run. They aren't pushing the the envelope. It even runs on the free laptops my University gives out. Even those are dual cores with SSE3, and shader model 4.0. You can't crank up the graphics like I can on my desktop, but you can still play.

This is interesting, CCP announces that they will up the minimum requirements for the game and people start to moan. If you have a laptop you got from work, it means you have a job and shelling out $400 + display, mouse & keyboard will not bankrupt you. If it does, move to a smaller apartment or kick the pot habit for a month.
Only chipsets and machines not being able to run the game will be in the sub-$300 category (besides macs and selected netbnooks) and I don't think you actually bought a cheap computer like that to be used as a gaming rig. Only few people will get left otu because of this and they include only those who can't manage their books and spend more than they can afford.

You kow this is funny (not) I was kicked out of eve because of a major grafics update 2 years ago almost to the day and I have just been able to get back on about three months ago and now because of the shader 3 upgrade I am going to be off again. I run labtops and or notbooks because I am mobile and you can't just replace your video card when you need to. That would be nice but you can't do that. I Love playing EVE and I have three accounts with them but this is geting nuts and very very costly. I am begining to wonder what is the point. I know haveing better visual affects are great and I love'm just as much as the next guy (or gal) but dam. I don't have 2g to put ino labtop every year just to have the better grafics every time they upgrade them. Anyway have funny and injoy see you all later (when ever that is going to be)

Holy [expletive] man!
If you have a desktop with a free expansion slot that has a CPU that can play EvE now then you have NO EXCUSE. You can buy a video card that supports SM3 for less than $50 to fit in a PCIe, AGP 4x(or 8x), or PCI(that is right, there are PCI video cards that support SM3).
If you have a laptop with a video card made in the last 4 years then you have NO EXCUSE because every nVidia card since the 6XXX series(the last 7 years) has supported it and every ATI card since the 2XXX series(the last 4 years, the 1XXX series supported it except for "vertex texture fetching") has supported it.
The ONLY exception is if you have a laptop/notebook/netbook WITHOUT A PROPER VIDEO CARD that is running an Intel chipset more antiquated than the G965. The Intel GMA X3000, a 5 year old built-in graphics chip, supports SM3.
SHUT.

We are talking about laptops, you illiterate troll. [since we're being mean and all And since EvE is a boxed game as well as a downloadable, name one game that you have a disc for that the publisher can go and break on you?

The first dev blog we wrote about Shader Model 3 was in Jan 2009, more than 2 years ago. Based on the feedback then we postponed at the time making Shader Model 3 the minimum.
The next dev blog was in Oct 2010. In that blog we stated that "graphics cards with ShaderModel 3.0 support will become the minimum required graphics cards to run EVE Online at a yet-to-be-announced date in Q2 2011". We have now announced that date to be 5 Apr 2011.
The general reason for why we upgrade EVE were detailed in this dev blog in Sep 2009. To summarise the main points presented there: "The history of EVE is the history of continuous enhancements, updates, upgrades, and new and improved technology; both client and server software updates as well as hardware upgrades (...) Why do we constantly update EVE? "Why can't you just keep it the way it is?" We update EVE because EVE needs to be fresh, vibrant and cutting-edge. EVE should be immortal, just as you, the pod pilot (...) Introducing new technology has at times required that we update the minimum system requirements needed to run the EVE client. Adding new technology sometimes entails that old technology must be left behind."

If you're little troll was just supposed to be a thinly veiled *fix lag* rant then seriously, get new argument. Lag will never fully be solved. Even when they manage to redesign the server code to support dynamic load balancing it will likely STILL pop up from time to time. If you can't accept that then find another game genre cause lag is inevitable in MMO's.
Also your whole second paragraph just shows how clueless you are. FYI the graphics ENGINE is the second most important component of the game behind the server code and has a huge impact on game performance.
Oh I have been here for the last 5 years now, and I can tell you there is more wrong than just the graphics package. How about that emergency reboot after down time this morning to fix an issue with the database.... AGAIN.
How about those logs that still show incorrect data that the GM's swear are all correct?
How about the chat lag where you can sometimes out type and send a line before its even seen? That issue has been around for over a year and a half alone, it was fixed for a short while, and then came back and still has yet to be addressed again.
Point is, I love eve as much as the next person, but there has to be a point where you have to examine the product you have created, and fix it before you can make it pretty. We pay for eve in some form or fashion, and yes eve has gotten better as time has gone along, <shutters remembering Red Moon Rising> but there are still core issues that need to be fixed and addressed, and to me those far our way the need for eve to be "pretty". If you paint and polish a blemish until its bright and pretty, it still doesn't change the fact that its still a blemish. All you did was cover it up, or make an attempt to make it look pretty.
How about you go to the doctor and say your guts hurt and he gives you some revitalizing cream for your face to make it look better. Does that make your guts hurt any less? No I didn't think so either, and you'd not be satisfied with the outcome of that visit and would expect the doctor on a swiftly rescheduled visit, to correct the gut ache.
As far as lag goes, well stay out of jita. lol Lag is as you say a constant issue and battle, and one that will never be solved unless you have a 100 terabyte internet connection speed, and maybe not even then. No I recognize the Lag Beast as its own entity and know there is no cure for it now, and no cure for it ever in the future. All that can be done on that note is to lessen its effects as best you can.

seriously tho... what do laptop buyers think they are getting when they buy a laptop? In the future, maybe these people will pay attention to what they are buying. Laptops are not great gaming platforms, and they where never meant to be. I for one welcome our new shader3 overlords!
My thoughts about the complaints and reasoning in this thread is that most of the systems that seem to have troubles are laptops. In my mind laptops have never been gaming rigs, unless you have a lot of money to blow on a shiney new laptop that has stats comparable to a close-to-current gen desktop computer.
Buying a desktop comp which runs EVE decently isn't expensive even in Europe (where I live), look at the second hand market and you can get really good deals.
While having the mobility and tidy appearance of a laptop is great it always comes with a price in performance and system life due to limited upgrading options. If you're buying a laptop gaming rig on a tight budget or on any budget while expecting it to last many years you're doing it wrong.
Then again, those who have lifestyles that require them to use laptops I can understand it being frustrating. But hopefully that lifestyle is worth that little sacrifice.
Either way, for me I'm happy we're moving forward! One step back and two steps forward is still progress all told. |

Don't get me wrong, I love that you finally start to push the technology as my computers are begging for a program that can benefit from the latest hardware. However as I wrote above, you really should be more clear with the hardware requirement roadmap. I read every blog as they are posted and had totally missed/forgotten about the announcement of the Q2 2011 removal of SM 2.0 support.
Maybe you should add it to the hardware requirements page as soon as you have a rough estimate of when a certain technology no longer will be supported, regardless if you actaully will render the hardware obsole that exact date or not. In this case you could have added a single line saying "After Q1 2011 SM2.0 will no longer be officially supported."

and few of the fixes if any that they have done have been related to graphics. Most are UI or gameplay related or just feature fixes or requests that have been asked for forever. Just because they haven't fixed your pet peeve doesn't mean they won't eventually. I could just come down to where it lies in their list of priority fixes or the seriousness of the issue.
As for the database issues, EVE has easily one of the most complex databases in any game and is also right up there with many of the top databases in the world when it comes to throughput. You have to accept that from time to time there will be hiccups and if an emergency reboot is all that results than big whoop. It could be a lot worse. Also, if you're complaining about the server logs not showing something that happened client side, where have you been since launch this is nothing new. Also the chat lag issue you are referring to is obviously not that widespread, personally I've never had it and haven't seen a lot of people complaining about it in the channels I frequent, so it's understandable if it's not terribly high on their list of priorities to fix. Also they may know of the issue but just haven't discovered a fix for it yet. Not all bugs are quick and easy fixes.

You're shoving down our throat this change. You do it to cut costs, to improve the product, to get rid of legacy, whatever. But at least don't pretend we're dumb or idiot.
The very machine I'm writing this stuff on is a run-of-the-mill office rig (HP DC7800P) with a low-spec graphic card integrated in the Intel Q35 chipset servicing the Core2Duo E8400 CPU.
- It supports SM2.0 - It doesn't support SM3.0 (checked with the app linked in the devblog) - It is still perfectly adequate for running low intensity tasks ingame like trading, POS caring, PI, hi-sec logistics and social stuff (chat, . - Probably won't be able to do that once you "discontinue" SM2.0. - It cannot be upgraded, as it's a work asset I'm allowed to use only after my daytime job is over and I relax a bit before going home. - Most important, it's a chipset released in June 2007 (reference). That's less than FOUR years ago. Not eight.
Thank you for reducing my play options.
So you're complaining that you don't get to use your work pc for fun and games?
So you're complaining that a PC that was explicitely NOT meant for games won't work with a game?
Just wondering.

I believe CCP Zulu should edit his post to let those with GMA laptops, netbooks, and nettops that they can't play eve anymore. I think a lot of people think that they're talking about "8 year old computers". My 10 year old p4 has a SM 3.0 card that really can't run eve. My laptop has a GMA that can. They broke EvE for me, and for many, many others, who will probably get a rude awakening when their 1 to 2 year old computers (NOT 8 yo) stop playing eve.
Just have to throw it out there, but why do people keep asking CCP to support GPU's that aren't at all meant for gaming?
That Intel and co has been putting out severely outdated integrated video chipsets which aren't meant for gaming at all... Well, that's not CCP's fault, and if the money situation is so tight i'd really look into quitting EVE and doing whatever you can to fix it somehow.
You can harp on all you want but the vast majority of the people playing EVE are pretty happy that the game doesn't look like it did in 2003 anymore now in 2011. Oh yes, there was a time when people complained high and low about their DirectX 7 cards not being supported anymore, and i sure am glad that CCP listened to them and never ever worked on making EVE look better to keep the game alive and growing.
Oh, wait.
Entitlement issues, seriously. You're even getting refunds. It's a game, people. A GAME.

HP Mini 5101 , Got one, gfx supported is SM2.0 only (1.5 years old)
I stand corrected, though why HP would put such an old GMA into that laptop is beyond me. GMA 950 was over four years old when they made that laptop. I feel for you!

It's not HP's fault, it's Intel stuffing the old gfx core into their Atom chip. Even the newer 4xx and 5xx series run with GMA3150 which as previously above is only partially capable of SM3 and hence will not either work in future. That means that about 99% of netbooks currently on market are in near future incapable of running Eve even if they otherwise meet the minimum requirements.
For others previous posters who say that "buy a newer laptop" , I don't want to buy a fething 'drag-around' , what I need when I go mobile is something small enough and light enough to carry around so I can login, change skill queue and chat with corpies / friends, maybe do a trip thru highsec in a shuttle or something if there's no war.
Now what CCP is doing is killing this, they're claiming this in the name of "legacy support" but what it really is, is that they're just too damn lazy to make the necessary optimisations to codepaths to support sm2 with sm3 path. I guess that in less than 2 years or so there'll be a blog: "Discontinuing support for SM3.0, SM4.0 minimum requirement."
