My experience with 1v1's is that they are NEVER a good idea with people you don't know. The dangers are as follows and you will almost ALWAYS encounter one of them. I also included how to reduce the impact:

1) He's got buddies that will pounce on you the second you take the can. You should open up his corp and set standings with them to Orange.. check local.. see if any others are lurking around. If they are.. don't bother.

2) He may have a neutral alt character nearby ready to Remote Repair his ship during the fight. Watch the fights for a while and see if this happens. If it does, forget about it. You can also try to get them to fight in a safe spot, with no other ships around. This seems like a lot of work to me.

3) MANY 1v1'ers have a tricked out ship with no tackle, all damage and/or a big buffer, knowing it will a 1v1 fight. If you are not set up the same you will lose.

4) 1v1 pilots often have macro's set up to turn on and over heat everything on their ship the second you engage There is no counter to that unless you also have a macro. Certain logitech keyboards for instance will allow you to chain commands and assign them to a single button.

5)Some 1v1 guys have a friend in their fleet in a T3 or command ship giving them HUGE bonuses. I can't think of a good way to counter that one unless you insist on fleeting up. Make sure there is nobody else in your fleet.

Basically.. 1v1's are fail for the guy not running the show. I have fought people I should be able to absolutely murder only to watch my resistance melt and my ship pop even before i've overheated everything.
