Wanna bet?
I got a very good idea fleet fights on dedicated nodes will change significantly when we put the new server in place :)

Also:
The processor is not announced by Intel but I can hint they have been semi publicly as special samples in the recent past. I'm working on an okay to talk about the exact specs, but until the server is up and live... I doubt I'll be able to.
The IBM server it is going into is from an existing model line but is a special system as well.
What I can also tell you is worries about one off customs are not an issue. This is a server, purpose build from IBM/Intel and is well supported. This is the only way were wanted to give a cool node to the players.
We'll have a SUPER DETAILED (loads of pics too) blog about this once it's live in a few weeks!!!
I think "super-node" doesn't do this server justice... I'm thinking we should start a naming contest for it on the forums :)

Why was there an animal attached to it? Shouldn't you be humping it instead? I wish I was there... :( I love hardware pr0.nz...
edit: damn censorship :P
This server was an internal project the Virtual Worlds Team took on... basically it can double fleet fights... but the means we had to go to... well are ridiculous. But! The new server we are talking about matches or exceeds what we got from our Frankenstein server in a much more elegant package.

There better be graphs. It wouldn't be a CCP Tech blog without alot of graphs.
Also as others have said it does sound like a prototype server. If so isn't that quite risky to run on a live server. Or will it just be used as backup for reinforcing nodes.
I think there were lots of graphs in my last Dev Blog... you still need more?
The server is not a prototype/one-off. It is a production system from IBM and Intel but is a very special use case. From what I am told/can talk about... it looks like it was designed to work for high performance transaction on trading floors.

So it's the 64 core, 128 Threads, 16 ram slots / cpu slot and quickpath links, children eating beast, i am having wet dreams of..... SWEET!
Cores and RAM don't really help fleet fights.... so not.. that is great for the DB... but what we are doing for the flight fight server is a tad different.
