During fanfest videos we heard about a new nebulae background system, still in progress. Will this new background be visible for wormholes ?

I doubt it, since WH skyboxes don't really need a graphical facelift, and that wormhole space itself seems to be nowhere near New Eden.

Actually he said these updates would be used across the whole of EVE as part of a gamewide upgrade.

Didn't wormholes get new looking backgrounds anyways? --_--_-- Skill Sheet |

My mistake then. I was under the impression the new skyboxes were just for the regions of New Eden, from the sketchy map they showed and that the whole point was to have a landmark across systems. I don't know if CCP have said wormhole systems are in the same area of space as each other... if they were then it would make sense for a WH landmark in their skyboxes too.

WHs already have significantly different backgrounds than normal space, I would doubt that they need updating.

The new textures for Nebulas are not only sketches or something.. They are actually three dimensional 3D it means that when youre in one part of the nebula which is yellow and you see green one in distance, you can go there if some stargate is heading this way. Or another part of one system will look different than other one. ...

They are still skyboxes (flat 2d textures on a cube around your space-view). Those 2d maps are made from 3d nebulae scattered across the galaxy and rendered from certain points within that galaxy (not every system will get it's very own skybox textures according to it's coordinates.. but for every parsec or what (3.5LY roughly) you'll have a skybox that several systems that are contained within that area will be using.

If you look on this video http://www.youtube.com/user/CCPGAMES#p/c/9923468C02F5604D/9/RzKCVs7Z8XY from fanfest 2011 where there was a talk about new nebulae youŠll see that I am actually right. New nebulae will be 3D so that means you can rotate them.

Unlikely. They might be 3D stuff that's rendered from different positions depending on your system (or maybe even grid), but it won't be realtime 3D and you won't be able to "spin" them. It just wouldn't fit to the perspective and such (far away stuff appears to be static; e.g. the stars at night when ignoring the earth's movement/rotation).

There would be no fps drop, you only have to render it once for every jump; perhaps not even that if the skyboxes are saved as images. Nebulae are enormous, moving just a couple of hundred au within one won't make it look any diferent

I still bet the jump lag during 500+ fights is going to be even worse ... or at least until everybody has loaded grid.

Just like a single, sparsely decorated and poorly textured room wouldn't tax most new gpu's.

Well, that's Carbon. The real meat of EVE runs on Trinity.
And besides, if you're having problems running Carbon, that's your problem. Do you blame every other developer when a game can't run properly on your system? I know that Carbon could definitely use some optimization, but this kind of complaining is pretty ridiculous.

CCP - just make the background less bright ffs. I hate having to keep my camera turned to the darkest part of space just to be able to see my overview and mods properly.

I doubt the stress on the servers will be any worse than the current system, they are replacing the old nebulae boxes around you in all the systems, and this time with a touch of detail to geography rather than at random for different constellations

They said that they made a highly realistic 3D model with the help of scientiest and are prerendering the skybox for each and every solar system on a HPC cluster in high res.
This is absolutely nothing you would ever want to render on your local client.

What Real said.
If you watch the video, and have the slightest flicker of intelligence to filter what is said through, you'll understand that the skyboxes will be pre-rendered images just as they are now.
The difference from the current system is threefold: 1) It looks amazing. 2) Each, or at least many, system(s) will have unique skyboxes for their location in space. 3) Skybox images will be rendered from a 3D-scape spanning the galaxy.
The skyboxes themselves will not be 3D - they will be a flat backdrop. -----

Heh! Well, like I said, the engine could definitely use optimization. I average around 46-54 frames/second, which is acceptable for me since Captain's Quarters doesn't serve any purpose at the moment.

I've got an nVidia 470, and when I enter the room of doom and gloom my video card temp sky rockets. I had to turn it to the door because I was worried about it burning up. This room SHOULD NOT push my card that hard. It's silly. o.O

You forgot Battlefield 3 running at 30fps.
Either way its basically going to exist as a 3d model on somone's computer at ccp just like thier movie client does with the 2 million poly count ships, CCP will then use the assest to generate client assests where are not requiring a 8GB video cards and 64Gb memory and. This is an early tech demo of nebulae from a mmo called Infinity. It s been poasted on here many times but beating this dead horse is a pleasure contrary to most other dead horse beatings.
When / if this game ever sees the light of day as a public release is whole other matter tho, but if/once it does, EVE Online will be toast.
Nebulae how they should have been all along.
