Sometimes you just get unlucky. I have had hit/miss with soloing recently, got a few nice fights the week before in a navy slicer killing some dramiels, then roamed for 2 hours straight with nothing and only finding people who expect you to fight their arty cane or recons in a frigate instead of bringing something you'll fight. Bringing anything bigger than a frigate often gets me camped in by risk free gate-campers, and I really dislike running a second account to scout.
What keeps me playing are those rare, 1 in a hundred fights that you get every so often that comes down to a silver of structure and you warping off as a blob lands.

Not dead at all, tbh. What you are seeing is an increase in gangs as a result of FW unifying more players, and as such, giving you more fleets to destroy solo (if you're pro).
You need to work on your intel gathering and know who flies with who, gank tacklers and split up fleets. To solo today requires skill but don't let that scare you! The best fights I've ever had was me vs the blob and coming out on top!
Keep at it, friend, and you will soon find yourself with no targets as they all dock up when you enter!

Nice to see you back around Gib, It's probably the only reason I miss providence you always had 1/2 man gangs flying around looking for a fight. Now I have to be with at least 6-10 people even to think about it. Thats even if you see anyone, you get the occasional lone cane camping a gate but usually everyone runs off at the first sign of a neut.

Yea, I found numbers count alot in battles, besides, comms is really quite after a while in solo pvp

I'm just baffled how you could solo entire small gangs with a Harpy.
I mean, if there was a small gang of Tormaks, you'd have been done! 
Maybe you should try some lowsec ganking instead of 0.0 :) or go back to Jita and duel people outside station :) or do like a wardec thing.

I've been thinking about this lately since I recently left a great corp because of RL committments...so I get on, and if I want a little PvP I'm going to have to go search for it. I've got a hisec->nullsec connection nearby and I've been looking at the ship and NPC kill stats in those systems.
If I can expand the OP's question a bit, in the scenario of a lone guy going into null, should I just figure an SB is about all I should take out there? How about an AS, or even a cruiser or a HAC? I've also been thinking about a recon...although it seems to be an ineffective DPS beast.
Is it a given that I should fit a cloak, or just take a chance on the transitions?
All dumb questions - I'm just trying to figure out how to have some fun; I don't mind losing ships and I don't mind flying around biding my time for the right opportunity.

My killboard may be ****, but you can verify there that like %95 of my kills are solo, and most of the time you see me I will be solo, although on occasion I'll fly with one or two fleetmates. The key is being patient and engaging even when you're not %100 sure you can win. I don't really see the appeal of never engaging unless you're at a great overwhelming advantage, although don't take that to mean you should be reckless.
