My first month or so of Eve: get +4 implants (Cyber IV) get Frigate 4 get Gunnery 5 get Small Energy Weaps 5 get Small Pulse Laser Spec 3 get Hull Upgrades 4 get Mechanic 4 get Repair Sys 4 get Energy Sys Op 4 get Energy Mgmt 4 get Electronics / Engineering 5 get Nav and Weap Upgrades to 4 get Controlled Bursts to 4 prob a few other skills to 3's like shield mgmt/op etc
What did I do in my first month? Sisters of Epic Arc (great money and good standings for new players), tutorials (boring but good standings and free bits), and then worked my way quickly into L2 missions while waiting to get into an Agony Unleashed pvp class.
By my 4th month, I had min-maxed my attributes for INT/PER to be able to train both support and combat skills. I had 7mil sp when I joined this pirate gang I'm still in. I had graduated to a Harbinger bc but was still spending time between navigation, core supports (shield/armor/energy/elec/mechanic), and combat skills.
I felt like a turd when going out with the new pirate gang as I had bc4 and still only using T1 lasers, T1 drones (and not even able to use ECM drones). However I had eng5, elec5, mech5, hull up5, repair sys 5, gunnery 5, nav5, spaceship command 5, bc 4, energy op 5, etc. Knocking out all the easy 1x skills while actually learning to pvp, wishing every day I could use T2 gun and drones and even shield bits (since we do shield roams fairly often and I never bothered to train them thinking an Amarr ship would never need them much like Cal/Min). Everyone else is flying all T2 or better fitted ships, T2 ships, T3's, and such.
But I was having a very fun time, and getting in on lots of kills. I even scored my first solo against a guy who I think was about 4 or 5 years older than my char.
Now it is just over a year later and I'm 20+ mil sp, have really good skills like:
Recon 5 Drone Interfacing 5 all navs except jump-related stuff to 5 energy emissions, mgt, shield mgt, op and such to 5 T2 beams and pulses with good supports Can fly a Legion Can use full pirate implant sets T2 frigs HACs and a good deal more.
The one thing I definitely agree with that others have said is that Eve needs to define 'occupations' a bit more, maybe even go slightly backwards to the old char generation system when creating a char. If you open F12 and see the occupational tutorials, wouldn't it be better when choosing a new char to get some skills sets that were for specific occupations?
combat chars could start with say frig 4, small racial weap 3 or 4, eng/elec/mech 3,
indy chars could start with sci 4, lab op 3, research 3, (whatever stuff is related to indy)
mining chars could start with mining 4, whatever goes with mining
exploration chars could start with astrometrics 3, rangefinding 1 or 2, acquisition 1 or 2, racial frig 3 or 4, the rigging skill for grav capac rigs at 1 etc
and have all the ships and modules and skills to purchase as the tutorial guides players along the path in the starter system, as well as encourage players to do all the tutorials and see what other occupations are about.
TL;DR = I spent my first 3-4 months learning how to play and making isk and such, then started pvp'ing. Now one year later I'm flying/shooting/repping/droning more stuff than I can actually afford (ie shiny T2 and better).
I also wouldn't mind paying an extra $5 a month on my account to train a second character at same time. You can only log in on one char at a time, so it isn't like it could really be abused.
Skills are fine as they are. More direction for players to optimize training/occupations would help tremendously. If I hadn't already been playing Eve for a few years, my 20+ mil sp would be spread out all over hell like my original char =/
