I'd just like to pop in and say, this thread is a fascinating read w/ many points of view (and variable debating skill). On the topic of botting, I am against - I have relatively less play time than I used to, but I don't believe that entitles me to bend the rules. I really don't even understand the justification for botting. 'there are other people who put more effort than me into the game and they are rich, therefore I deserve to be rich too...' Or 'there are other people who buy (plex) with real money and then sell the plex for isk, to get ahead. Therefore I can bot because I want to get ahead too using some outside advantage'.
I guess I mainly feel slightly amused by people who have to accumulate more and more pixels. I think there are therapists who can help you with that. (/sarcasm).

An ex-miner here. I dropped out of that profession because of the decline of mineral prices, and watched with dismay the rise of the bot. I applaud the efforts of Ninja, and Othran, and others in this thread. Also CCP's efforts to suss out and ban macro users, of course. Good on all of you.
Oh and macro users: Read the EULA. It specifically forbids this behavior. You can try to justify your ill-gotten gains but the simple sad truth is you're not willing to play the game (even if it is, admittedly, not very fun gameplay) to get the rewards. Your sense of self-entitlement is all within your head, and those of us who plow through the boring to get to the good are quite happy to see you banned. B'bai now, scurry elsewhere.

Edited by: Komen on 18/05/2011 16:05:12 Oh, second page? No no, that won't do. Up you go.
Edit with a real post later.
Edit-
So, having read the latest update, this is all very good. I don't really have anything to contribute, aside from noticing, as I move through systems near Jita, several characters and corps with names like 'jalskdf jalskdf' (<--made up example). So either they've turned their bots off and are just idling, they're actual legitimate players (perhaps an alt corp), or they are botting and CCP hasn't scooped them into the banmachine yet.
Thanks again NinjaSpud for digging into this.

ty for that kind bump :)
Nothing super to report on the botters websites. But I did receive a very interesting email.
Out of respect for privacy, I will not divulge the name attached to this email. I logged on this morning before work to check my PI and this is one of the emails in my in box:

I am a former botter and I am very sorry. :-(
I would like to to what I can to help you and your movement to remove botting from the game. May I first give you some background.
I won't give any excuse for my activity, I'm a grownup and I know it was against the EUA.
I run with one miner and one Orca pilot in Hi-sec. I used the Macrolab programme which is regarded as one of the best. It is run by a person called Slav who regularly updates the programme for free. The costs are failry low and with one miner (boosted) I could keep three alts going in plex.
The main reason people bot is to be competative in a harsh market. However the market is harsh because of the botters. Its a downward spiral which is why I would like to do all I can to help you and Sreegs. I understand I may not have anythign new to tell you and that my input may be small, but if there is anything I can do I will. Its the only way to break the spiral imho.
Spotting a Macrolab user is fairly easy. Firstly they run a fairly regular pattern. Although a random delay is programmed into the app it isn't often used. They will then return to the same spot in a belt and mine it until its dead of the ore they have set to mine. They cannot put different crystals into their lasers so they tend to mine the same ore all of the time but they can replace broken crystals of the same type. They do not use Orcas in the traditional sense. The goods can only be unloaded in a station so an Orca can only be used away from any threats (usually a POS or safe spot) and buffs. Multi mining is possible but risky. The system switches only everry 10 mins leaving the non-active bot vulnerable. Running on two or more seperate systems is s safer option but will cost you an extra license.
Macrolabs also runs a Trader bot, but I never used it.
I have given you a brief overview of what Macrolabs do but I don't know if it is of any use. I probalby have answers to questions you may have and if I can help at all I am very happy to do so.
Guys this gives me some hope. This tells me that there are some people out there that where just in it for a cheap and easy buck. I officially have an informant...someone who's used this macro before and can give details on its working. I'm going to have a long conversation with this guy, and learn all the ends and out of the macrolab bot. This will help us spot them, and know the difference between a bot and a real person.
I would like to thank you, mr former botter, for coming forward with this information. I have no doubt that some here will flame you for your past digressions, but I appreciate the help.
I wish to add my thanks to you, 'mr former botter'. Hey, we all make mistakes. You've realized yours, you've stopped (apparently) and you've even apologized. Further, you're offering insight into the problem gained from first-hand experience. I'm sure those in the 'still botting' camp would like to stomp you, but it's okay. We're here for you.

So I frequent the Ku** site (as an avid lurker), and came across a regular poster admitting that he not only got banned, but that CCP confiscated his wallets and assets, leaving him -5 and -7 bil in the hole on each account. He further admits that yes, he botted.
He then goes on to try to work up a fervor against a certain GM Loki (the persona of the GM who removed the ill-gotten botting gains), only to have the regular residents of Ku** take a very large dump all over him for the attempt.
I wish GM Loki to know you have my personal thanks for your no-nonsense approach to ruining the game for cheaters.

Further edit:
I wish to thank GM Loki for smashing a botter hard. I don't have a problem with this. What I hope is happening is that other botters are being smashed hard also - not just bans, but isk removal to the point of being severely handicapped.
Not, it should "ISK removal of the ISK gained by cheating".
The ban is the punishment. The ISK removal is merely to prevent the botter profiting from his cheating.
The principle is exactly the same as when GMs remove RMT'd ISK.
I understand this principle. Personally I'm saying that ISK removal ought to be a regular part of the punishment, too. "Thou hast gained unearned wealth, so thou too shall experience crippling poverty." It's one of the ten commandments of CCP, or ought to be. If such a thing as a 10 commandments of CCP existed. Except there'd probably be like 4 on there and the rest would be iterated on at some later, unspecified date. (I really do <3 CCP but I've been in this game since '04 and you can't say I'm wrong.)

Actually I'm glad you mentioned this.
First off, I personally would watch them for at least a week, trying to contact them (just chatting messages, EVE related stuff, but never once mentioning botting). If they continue with the same pattern, perfectly, at the same time each day, thats highly suspicious. If they never once contact me (even to just say go away lol), thats even more suspicious. But the key is in all that time, do they never go idle for a bit (player loses track of time/finds something interesting and forgets he's mining). Another good tell is when the ice roid depletes. Do they switch to a new roid near immediately, or is there the wait for the 10 minutes or so. This is the best point to start bumping them. If they truly are afk and the ships does nothing, no harm done. If it starts mining, they must either be a bot or at the computer. Using a fast BS to bump them will easily get them out of range of the ice they were mining. If they continue trying to fly back to that one roid for say, 2 minutes, then back off and let the ship fly back (this is to see if they "anchored" their ship at the bookmark, I do that when afk). If once in range the miners start up again, it is rather safe to assume that it is a bot at the wheel (or a really stupid person who tried for a minute to get back to the roid), at which point, report them to CCP with a list of your tests and their suspicious behaviors. The key to this test is that you bump them before the switch to the next roid. That way, if a real person is there, they will see it and have some reaction.
Works for asteroid belts too... with modifications to the cycle time and fill time.
I hate to be nitpicky but - ice roids never deplete man. Otherwise, yes, long-term observation is a decent method of player-determination that another char is possibly botting.

Originally by: CCP Sreegs Hey guys, I haven't had time to catch up but I wanted to let you know that I'm working on a blog that should go out in the next week or so and I've included some numbers that I think do a bit to show our progress and justify some of the decisions we've made so far. I also have some pretty exciting additional stuff to talk about. I'll let you know when I have a definite publication date.
Will this include the number of petitions and escalations by the dirty botters? That would make some good pron.
And how much ISK you guys confiscated... *drools*
Seconded.
Also, I further would like to raise the point that any PLEX on banned accounts be donated to the various PLEX for Good efforts. I think that would be just swell.

Originally by: Henry Haphorn Interesting about the Chinese server. I wonder if we could get enough people to pay them a visit (mafia style).
And accomplish what, besides visiting grief on players who aren't botting on our server? No, I'd rather pay a visit to the bot-farms, as in their physical location, as in with intent to liberate a bunch of poor enslaved computers from a terrible task they've been set. ;)
(No, I am not advocating ACTUALLY stealing physical assets. That would be illegal. I would never advocate anything illegal.)

Anyone know if wormhole miners are using macro/bots?
Asking as I'm all cloaky eyes on this op and they're pretty on the clock with hauler in/out and whatnot.
Anywho.
