Apologies for the sarcasm, but I am exceptionally disappointed with the performance of the "Mac Client" and it would appear from the forum that I am not alone in this. I have already remorsefully given eve up once because I was throwing money away on a game I could not play. I can back thinking that the issue might have been solved but it appears not. I do like EVE a lot, but I am finding it difficult to justify paying a monthly subscription for something i cant play.

Unfortunately, probably never. You see, Mac users currently make up about 3-4% of the EVE subscriber base (well, 3-4% log in on the Mac client, probably more use Bootcamp or Parallels). And EVE uses DirectX, rather than OpenGL to run its graphics engine, which means that unless they recode the game engine entirely, there is always going to have to be an emulation layer for it to run on the Mac.
It would be nice if the emulation layer at least was not terrible, resource-intensive and buggy. In ur engineering, fixin' ur warp core. |

It isn't impossible, as Blizzard has had simultaneous releases of Diablo, Starcraft 2(not the original) and Warcraft for Mac/PC and all with a native mac client. The Warcraft mac client is actually FAR superior to the PC client and a lot of PC guys are very jealous.
The features of Open GL allow them to have a built in Fraps, it basically takes the output of your graphics card and records it directly to your hard drive and can record with or without the UI active and I can record at 2560x1600 at 29FPS (I am on a raid as it takes 72MB/s throughput for that resolution) and it isn't grainy or crappy looking.
The other cool feature makes jukebox look like junkbox. Direct in game buttons that control iTunes. So while in game, you can press hotkeys to directly control iTunes.
It CAN'T be that hard, but I am sure initially it would be time/manpower intense, as well as hiring quite a few Mac programmers and getting them to move to Iceland, which I am sure wouldn't be cheap.

Nish,
What are your problems with the existing Mac Client? I have played EVE for over two years on Mac using the Mac Client. I grant that about two years ago (around the time of Dominion) the client was unreliable, but since Tyrannis it has been perfectly usable.
Maybe you can find a lot of complaints here about the Mac Client, but if you look elsewhere you can find plenty of complaints about the EVE Client in general.
And no, I don't work for CCP

99% of my complaints are about multiple accounts and monitors. I run 10 accounts on 5 monitors and is a royal PITA to say the least. Until you have actually tried it, PLEASE don't patronize me with the "I run 2 clients fine crap" It is much deeper, changeable, scalable resolutions, draggable window sizes, something that resembles smooth graphics.
The other thing is the CTD bug. Very repeatable, crank graphics to high/max, then jump thru a gate or look at planets a few times, will happen every time, almost :)
A few other bull**** items: Jukebox hasn't worked properly in almost 2 years Graphics are crap compared to PC (Same computer MacOS vs Bootcamp, and bootcamp is between 50 and 300% faster depending on situation)

Edited by: Janna la''froo on 12/04/2011 16:51:09 I am having a lot of the same issues and Guthar, mainly its the crash to desktop stuff that i find really irritating. The jukebox issue whilst minor, is just shoddy! I have never known it to work.
To make the CTD issue worse it appears to have developed another problem of late when starting up. I get the splash screen, then the screen goes blank and then there is maybe a 50/50 chance of the login screen appearing or the black screen remaining. I then have to do a hard reboot. I don't feel like i am really getting value for money here. Normally second rate products are cheaper!
Nish,
Sorry, appeared to have selected ALT?

CCP likes to reinvent wheels (browser, music player, forum). With missing spokes and flat tires. Wait .. tires? *knockonwood*
Plenty of wasted manhours. Not focussing on core competency... hmm .. well ...

Ummm......my main complaint was that I couldn't so much as log on reliably. As often as not, the client froze my machine. But maybe that's a 'feature' rather than a bug...?
I've now let my subscription expire (a few days left). The silver lining is that I'm looking forward to spending more time this summer on my bike and less 'in' my cane.
Tell CCP to bite themselves for me when you see them. |
