Can people see the contents of courier contracts? Obviously I'm asking because I had stuff stolen and the collateral was not as big as the value of the package. I'm not here to whine, I just need to know the technical side. If people can see the contents without failing the mission then there's not any point in risk/reward balancing with collateral.

Yes. Once the contract is accepted you can view the contents of the plastic wrap without voiding the contract.
What do you mean by risk/reward balancing for collateral. You set the collateral above the value of your items but not stupendously high otherwise you would expect to raise the reward and have less takers for your job.

Yes, many people run courier missions purely to look for undercollateralized contracts which they then void and pocket the items. I have heard that good money can occasionally be made this way.

Well I was under the impression that they couldn't see what was inside, so there would be risk / reward in undervaluaing the package to get it delivered quicker. Seems thats not the case.

I have done enough of these courier grabs to be abe to make a good guess of what is in them. I grabbed a Mackinaw for 2 million collateral last night.

If you put items in a container, then make a courier contract for the container, then they cannot see what's in the container. This is referred to as double-wrapping.
