I've never seen this before, but I just scanned down a plex (highsec, Rogue Drone Asteroid) with three probes.
Have always needed 4 probes in the past.
Note, this is not one of those sites where you get a warpable hit with just one probe; there is also one of those in the system (Drone Assembly).
Is this new? A bug? Or am I just wrong in thinking I need 4 probes to get a bookmark? I am familiar with quadrangulation and probing, been doing it for ages.

Watch the video tutorial by CCP, it's most certainly possible with 3 probes. Haven't you heard of triangulation?

Except... triangulation is finding a specific point in a two dimensional space. Outer space is three dimensional. So you need a 4th reference point (probe).
Getting a warp-able hit with any less than 4 probes is a bug. |

No it isnt. Watch the video, CCPgames clearly states it's possible with 3 probes. if you can get on the correct plane height wise you can use triangulation to find the spot as you are no longer working in 3 dimensions. Adding in minor knowledge of spherical trigonometry you can use 3 spots even without the correct height to find a location. God people are clueless, making things simple and people jump to correct you when they're just plain ignorant. You learn things like spherical geometry in first year uni where I live.

So why then am I ALWAYS able to find thins when I have 4 probes on a single plane?

theoretically possible if your probes are on one plane with signature, unless deviation screws you, 2 points you normally get would point to same place I always got 2 points with 3 probes so far |

Imagine that every probe gives you the distance between the target and the probe.
With 1 probe you know how far it is away, so its somewhere in a sphere With 2 probes you know its somewhere in the circle, where both probes intersect With 3 probes you know its on one of two possible points, where the above circle intersects with the 3rd sphere With 4 probes you know which one of the two remaining points it is
The rare excemption with 3 probes would be that the 3rd probe only intersects at one point with the circle from 2 probes, in case the distance measured by the 3rd probe is - by mere chance - only touching the circle with its and at its rim once.

I think you mean trilateration and not triangulation, but you are right about irl 4 probes would be needed to leave only one possible location. In-game it would be possible to do it with 3 probes, as fare as i know, never seem any reason to test if it in face works :)
