I usually fly drone boats but I keep hearing that drones are like sleeper candy. I'm not ready for a proteus yet so what would my next best option be for running them with a small gang? Maybe a spider tanked rail diemost?

domi is a great spider tank platform, and drones do get hit yes but its not impossible to use them.

Don't listen to the haters. I live in a WH and some of my guys fly Gallente including myself. Perhaps back in the day they target drones but they rarely target ours anymore. We've running sleepers for 2 months now and have lost very few drones.
I like to use my Domi with sentries while I rep or transfer energy to other battleships. I, however, do not recommend more than 1 Domi in a raid if you are doing C3s or smaller. They just don't provide enough DPS

Did some C3's in a Gila the drones worked out fine, just fit a remote armor rep so you can repair them. Switched to a Tengu now.. and will probably never fly another ship for PvE again, well that is till I can fly a carrier, although not convinced that is a better option.. got BIG drones though :)

I normally fly Tengu's in my C4, but took my Carrier into an Anom for the 1st time yesterday. I was surprised to find that not one of the 10 drones deployed was targeted, I did 2 more Anoms with the same result.
I was remote repping a gang member and most of the aggro was on the Carrier, perhaps the sleeper aggro prioritizes Logistics before drones these days.
I did try with EC300 drones and they were all eaten in under a minute.
I wonder if the combat drone aggro has been modified since the early days of WH's.

Make sure you turn on Righteous Fury and just spam Flash of Light, you'll get mad healer agro and the sleepers will all target you.
The agro mechanics are similar to WoW, either DPS threat or healer agro. The sleepers will stay off your drones if you're a bigger threat than the drones.
Meaning repping actual damage, as opposed to shield repping someone who's already at 100%
or DPS in a direct manner each incoming ship, and continuing to out DPS your drones.
You can use drones but it's not a case of launch and go afk. You will need to pay attention and recall or remote rep should they get targetted.
