its a fair point but i think its more about a combination of human nature and the way the game is built than anything else: there is no changing it.
RL cash = GTC = ISK therefore ISK = RL cash.
This means that the whole time you play you associate the cost of any given item with its approximate RL worth.
Human nature states that "its never enough" - you only have to trundle over to the market forum to see that even the richest players in game are still striving to be richer.

I guess it comes from who I am in the real world, 23 year old unemployed ex-student, that I'm so careful with my money. Because frankly, I don't have any to spend on fun **** like women and shineys.
Whereas in New Eden I'm rather well off, I have ISK to spend on gambling (curse the addictive Blinks) and shiney faction fitted ships and what not. So it's no wonder I like to hoard a pile of ISK and roll around in it. There are two sides to the EVE community; those that scream for change and those that scream against it. Often they are the same person. |

Most MMO's are gear based, hitting the level cap is often pretty trivial, so people spend their time raiding to get the shiny items that you can't buy. In Eve everything is available for purchase, so money is king.
And for those of us funding (or mostly funding) our Eve time with isk bought Plex, it gives us more money to pay off our credit card bills and other boring RL stuff.

Too money obsessed?
Well, CCP requires you to work to buy your new toys. So, no. We're obsessed with the features of the game. Exploring them takes isk.
One thing that Eve has always lacked that I felt it needed was some form of PVP instant action....and arena of sorts where you get to fly any ship you want against chosen opponents, no repercussions, no cost. And don't tell me "Sisi". It's the test server, not the game server.

That would go against several rules of EVE. Don't fly it unless you can afford to lose it and PvP has consequences. Some of them dire. There are two sides to the EVE community; those that scream for change and those that scream against it. Often they are the same person. |
