Really, there is a massive tendency to ask "What makes me the most cash?" There are tons of discussion threads about what maximizes isk/hour. Doing what gets you your iskies seems to be on equal footing with what activities could be...you know...actually...fun.
A large part of this could just be capitalism as a major theme in the game. It is not unusual for people to get mercentile, even with close friends. People often use ISK/hour as justification for quitting or joining a corporation, or moving their activities from null to high, high to null, low, etc. These imply massive changes in what the gameplay is like, what goes through your head as you play the game. However many people make these changes not because they want something different, but because they think they'll get a 17% isk/hour.
Of course the SP system being essentially detached from the game, the only way to do something in game and have it move your character forward is to improve your financial resources. Since you get the same skills even if logged off, so isk/hour IS "power leveling". Though it seems the isk/hour obsession is greater here than the power leveling discussion in other games.
Of course you do need ISK for pretty much everything. ISK can give a limtied boost to your SP even. But you do need a steady supply for any activity. Though of course not as much if you avoid getting blown up and/or use Tech 1. Especially PVP where you've got a chance of getting blown up each time you go, and being competitive means Tech 2 everything. So while PVP is often supposedly the focus of the game, you're often graded based of your PVE isk gathering abilities just as much as anything else.
This is largely copy paste from my response in a thread discussing null sec. Things have gotten peaceful there, despite CCPs efforts. Several people noted that unless there is a good cost/benefit to a massive war, as in the sort of wars EVE is known for, people won't bother. CCP tried to change the cost/benefit equation, but many people on these boards doubt it will make a different ultimately because these power blocs prefer to sit there and make their wallets still larger without the prospect of epic glorious war getting in the way.

If I had to pick two of the most defining moments of growing up, I would say my first job and my first kiss. What do those two things have in common? Well, the first day of work is a lot like the first kiss. YouÆre not really sure what to do or whether youÆre doing it right, but itÆs exciting and new. I can still remember the nervousness and awkwardness of it all.
As IÆve grown older, IÆve come to realize this continues to happen throughout our lives ù your first day at a new job or the first time you have sex. In fact, it made me wonder if maybe money and sex have more in common than I had initially thought. It turns out that they do, and here are five reasons why.
1. Everybody does it.
Sex and power are two of our most primal instincts, and we all know that money equals power. Money is like sex, because everybody ends up doing it. No matter who we are, we eventually have to deal with earning/managing/saving money, just like we have to deal with finding/having/enjoying sex. While each person may have a unique approach, the point is thereÆs simply no way to avoid money and sex. These two things are part of the human experience.
2. Few people talk about it.
For two things that are such a big part of our lives, itÆs kind of strange that very few people are open to talking about sex and money. From my experiences, most people only talk about these things with their closest friends (or after theyÆve had a couple drinks). While sex and money are personal topics, one of the best ways to get better at something is to talk to people who have more knowledge and experience. Money and sex are no exceptions.
3. Some people are better at it than others.
While I believe that everyone should be treated equal, everyone is definitely not equally skilled at everything. Just like sex, some people are better than others when it comes to handling money. Why? Maybe itÆs hereditary, maybe itÆs learned, or maybe itÆs a little of both. Whatever it is, we all need practice to get better. Some people take classes. Others read books. Some just jump right in and learn from their mistakes as they go.
4. It feels better without protection.
I think I speak for the majority of the population when I say that sex feels better without protection. Sure, itÆs definitely not the smart thing to do, but as far as pleasure is concerned, itÆs the best thing to do. Responsibly managing your money is like putting a condom on your wallet. ItÆs the smart thing to do, but as far as pleasure goes, it kind of kills the mood.
5. ItÆs complicated.
I think weÆve all heard this one ù sex makes a relationship more complicated. Well, it should come as no surprise that money makes things more complicated too. It turns out our brains lust after money with the same neurons that they crave sex. In fact, these neurons can, and often do, override the functioning of the brainÆs frontal cortex which governs rational thoughts. Well, that explains a lot of the illogical decisions we make when it comes to money and sex. Or does it mean we canÆt explain it? Sigh. ItÆs complicated.

The rules are simple: make ISK so you can have fun (blowing stuff up or getting blown up). More time needed to grind ISK = less time to have fun. I wouldn't call it an obsession.

I feel sorry for you. The most defining moments in my life have been experiences that pushed me towards the realization that my happiness is independent from both my income and my relationship status. I do what makes me happy, which often doesn't pay very well. Before you go mocking me and assuming that I live in my parents' basement, let me add that I'm a physicist, and a rather successful one at that. I earn enough money to support myself. Beyond that, money is not an issue for me.
I would say something similar is true for Eve. You can spend your entire play time obsessing over what fancy ships you're going to buy when you eventually get enough money, and what you can do to make that money as fast as possible, but I find that style play to be rather limiting. I buy a good ship that's within my means and have fun with it. I follow my corpmates around and look for something interesting to do, which usually keeps my coffers supplied with enough money to maintain a t3 faction fit pve ship and plenty of well fit t2 pvp ships. I don't set out to make a bunch of money; I just take what comes my way while doing things that are fun for me.

Yes, people are dumb like that.
Take CCP for example.
They feed their massive family, they survive some of the worst economic times their country has seen, they eat well and have no worries.
So what do they do..... Chase more luxury at the expense of the security they had.

@Calathea Sata your money/isk/eve/power/sex theory, good lols, good lols... sounds like you play to much eve and don't get enough sex...

Isk is the means to an end, people have different goals in eve and they all come with different price tags. My character has just reached 7M skills points and i'm guessing, i've made a total of around 10B isk, of which most have been spend on doing stupid noob mistakes in very expensive ships, eg. i've seen two +1B fitted navy domi blow up in pve missions. My new goal is to build a capital ship, and i want to setup a pos... i know the blue prints are going to be very expensive, and i have little to no skill in industry or research... but i really don't care i just want to build a huge space ship, and i don't care if i lose money on that project or if it takes a long time.
I know i'll need alot of isk to build a capital ship, but it don¦t really matter, it does not have to be completed tomorrow. I make my isk by exploring, and when i've saved up for another blueprint i'll buy it. It's baby steps all the way, which is one of the things i like about i eve, you can log on and do that 1 hour of work and it's going to move that tiny bit closer to the goal.

I'll quickly place anything "fun" over "isk making" in a New York minute. Long experience with Eve's Capitalism has taught me a very valuable lesson, "Isk made today, Isk gone tomorrow". My formula is not isk/hr it is fun/moment. That being said: If it can't be fun then it damn well better be worth the isk.

Very simple. Higher isk/hr income means less hours can be spent making isk, and more hours spent playing the game.

Other than killboards (and most of EVE players don't actually engage in PvP in spite of the fact EVE is a PvP-centric game), rare assets (which, by definition, not that many people can have) and wallet ISK balance are the only other e-peen measuring instruments. So it's no wonder wallet balance seems to matter for so many people. And the easiest way for a fat wallet is doing stuff that gets you most ISK/hour.

Because EVE is center to blowing ships up, anything that isn't a direct attemtp to blow ships up is grind to meet that goal. I feel bad for the people who only play EVE to turn brackets in to Triangles and farm killmails. Everything else they do is grind. It's why they only make up about 2% of EVE. If we all thought like that we would quit out of utter boredom.
There is still no cost benefit to Sov in 0.0 sec. That isn't why most people aren't there though. Most people log in, they have something in mind they want to do. In 0.0 sec you log in and whoever is in "your Systems" dictates what you do for the next 3 hrs. You wanted to relax? Nope, you need to fend off the stealth bombers pounding your jump bridge array or chase away the cloaked nano kiddies harrassing your gates. Entertain other people in a nushell. Most people don't want to log in to that. |

This games is a sandbox and a sandbox is a mirror you stare at.
Greedy and menial people will find the need to play EvE to satisfy greed and menial things. Since they are the majority of the world's population, EvE "becomes" a game of greed and CCP "adapts" by selling EvE to cater to those subs yielding numbers.
I personally am very pleased to play EvE as a charity, to chit chat with the many fine guys in the game, money still came by itself in the tens of billions and I did not even seek for it nor know what to do with it except buy some pretty ship BPO to randomly fly around.
