I think I once heard that T2 light drones do about as much damage as T1 medium drones. Is that true? Or if not, what is a reasonable comparison?
Assume I'm looking for an argument that will convince a T1 light drone user to train so he can use, and then purchase, T2 light drones.

I think t1 mediums will do more raw dps than T2 lights, but T2 lights have way better tracking, sig resolution, and travel from target to target faster, meaning their applied dps is probably just as good or better than tech 1 mediums. Oh no you don't! Incoming witty reply, ETA: 300 seconds! |

Hobgoblin II = 28.8 damage, base. Hammerhead I = 38.4 damage, base.
Hornet II = 26.1 Vespa I = 34.8
Warrior II = 23.4 Valkyrie I = 31.2
Acolyte II = 20.7 Infiltrator I = 27.6
So, no.
However, If you take into consideration that Tech 2 drones do 20-30% more damage before factoring in the 8% more you get with Specialization IV, it's pretty obvious why you would want to train up T2 drones if you're a regular drone user (or honestly, if you ever use drones.)

IMO T2 light drones are a must-have for any pilot that sees combat of any sort (PvE or PvP).

In general you will do more damage over time with t2 light drones than t1 medium drones.
They are faster between targets, so even with lower dps, since you get to be shooting with your drones a lot faster you'll be able to kill targets faster. Then t2 drones have very nice tracking and such, making it easier for them to do more actual damage.
Finally, tech II light drones are completely easy to train and really a must for anyone doing anything with fighting ships with drone bays, ie anyone but the most specific alts. Since they are using memory&intelligence they are also an easy weapon type to train for science/industry people.

Do not think that because T1 Mediums have more base damage than T2 lights that T2 lights are useless. This is far from the truth - for one, many ships only have 25m3 or smaller drone bays, even on larger ship classes particularly on Caldari and Minmatar ships. Secondly, and more importantly, Light drones in general are much faster and have much better tracking than mediums. This is especially important in PVP - Mediums will have trouble tracking fast frigates and some Cruisers even, and will effectively do very little to zero dps. The same is true for Mediums and Heavies, except the tracking on Heavies will have issues on anything faster than a propulsion-less Cruiser.

this cannot be over emphasized. I know a guy who is training large blaster spec 5 before getting the basic drone skill to level 5.

Wait, you mean it's possible to play without Drones V? O_o My main started with it, I can't imagine what it must be like to not be able to deploy 5 drones... jeez.

(1) Seriously? Your friend is weird.
(2) t2 drones aren't necessary for PvP, you can (and eventually probably will for some boats) pretty much just shove a bunch of ECM drones in there and rely on your ship's weapons for damage. ---

I don't consider it possible to play without Drone Interfacing 5.

I won't agree entirely with the first statement. While light drones ARE faster between targets, they also have a terrible habit (particularly the T2 ones) of missing the target constantly for several seconds as they MWD past the target, MWD back towards the target going past again, (rinse and repeat several times) and finally settle down into their orbit. Medium drones still go plenty fast and largely do not suffer from this problem.
Higher levels of Drone Navigation can actually exacerbate this problem, though it becomes debatable whether the extra speed to the target counters the DPS lost due to "MWD bouncing".
