Space is black if you stop down your aperture (or iris) not to get overloaded by the light from close-by stars, planets, moons or other large light-emitting/reflecting objects.
If you don't do that, though, see the clip above.
Oh my god ù it's full of stars. But yes, nebulµ would mainly just be dots, indistinguishable from the sea of other dots. But it's a sea none the less. In fact, I'd say that a much bigger problem is how prominent the suns are in each system. They should mostly be dots as well, albeit slightly bigger ones than what's in the skybox.

The problem is that, at any distance where those kinds of phenomena would cover a significant portion of the sky, they'd be too sparse to be seen that way; at any distance where they'd show up that colourful, they'd be pretty small.
àand just filling the skybox with stars would provide much the same beauty without the technicolour extravaganza.

I don't see that as a problem. Just look at the video I posted on page 1: same vividness without the "oops, I tripped over the paint bucket" feelà
Granted, that's space through an atmosphere, but I'd still prefer that to wall-to-wall clouds. Sure, make those clouds decorative details on the skybox, and let us use the (not very by now) new fancy zoom to get a closer look, but stars/galaxies really should dominate imo.
