Dear everyone, pirates and carebears alike. I propose a question before you:
The Connections skill, im confused about it. I know that it increases your positive standings with bla bla % of bla bla.
But, my question is, is it one-time only? If i were to train it and get nice standings, but later lose them again, im ****ed right?
Also, does it only apply to corporations that have a standing towards me? Say i have done a whole lot of missions for Brutor, one single mission for another random Minmatar NPC corp, but no missions whatsoever for a random Amarr corp, will my standings increase with all corps that has a standing of 0-10 with me, known or not, or just the ones i "know"? If so, wouldnt it be better if i flew around doing lvl1's for every possible corp before training the skill?
I've seached a bit for this but havent found any answers for these exact questions.

The connections skill basically acts as a small multiplier.
Say you gain .1 of a standing gain from a mission. Then multiply it by 1.2 (at level 5), and then add it on.
So basically, you'll just gain standings faster. There's 2 skills though. Diplomacy is the same as Connections, except it only works when the agent has negative standings, and Connections only works when you have positive standings.

Do not make it so difficult, it is very simple
The "Social" skill allows you to "Gain" faction/standing at an increased rate. (Important skill to train to level 5)
The "Connections" skill, "Modifies/Increases" your standing with all Corps/Factions you are "Positive" with. (Train to level 4)
The "Diplomacy" skill "Modifies/Increases" your standing with all Corps/Factions you are "Negative" with.
The "Criminal Connections" skill "Modifies/Increases" your standing with Corps/NPCs that have a Negative Concord Standing
"Connections" and "Diplomacy" and "Criminal Connections" are not cumulative with each other!! only one takes effect at a time dependant on the situation.

The skill will increase your standingswith all factions / corps you are already positive with. Knowing the faction is irrevelant.
The gain / losses of standing are not directly affected, it is the total that gets modified. If I understand your question right, no you haven't wasted time missioning for the Brutor as your already earned standings will also get the bonus.
If you want to make it crystal clear, train it to lv1 and look at your "standings" tab in the char sheet. You'll see your effective standing, and how much you would have without the skill.

It is a really simple skill.
Effective Standing = Standing + (10 - Standing) * 0.04 * Connections Skill Level
