Macross was the show that got me into the whole sci-fi with epic massive space battles thing that lasted to this day, hence my initial interest on EVE that got me to stick around all these years. Though I've met a few other players like myself I was wondering if there were any more of you out there.
The show has been around for the same around years I've existed and has spawned great sequels others arguably good.
Here's some footage of the old Macross movie:

Robotech and Macross are very different things by the way. As a lot of the dialog was edited by Harmony Gold and the anime was jammed together with unrelated animes.

Extremely. I've spend many hours of my life replaying all the awesome combat scenes, they were all very detailed and elaborate for their time.. I just love everything, the dogfights, to the characters, the design of the ships (I'm a huge fan of the Meltran ships and their Queadluun-Rau power armors.)

I was first introduced to anime through Robotech (the American syndication of Macross). When I was older I bought the DVD set to Macross. To me it is hands down the most epic anime space series ever!

Quite true. No show has ever managed to make a space battle close to even the average exciting Macross episode.
They've made a lot more shows after the original by the way. Have you watched Macross Plus and Zero in particular?

I am actually quite partial to Macross Frontier (2007) (first half OP sequence). Legend of Galactic Heroes has some pretty epic space battles too, but probably not quite as entertaining to watch as in Macross (random example from ep 50). _

While the Macross legacy was great; I'm a little more partial to Kidou Senkan Nadeshiko (Mobile Battleship/Martian Successor Nadesico), Banner of the Stars series and of course LoGH when it comes to space operas.
I was never really moved to watch the latest Macross re-incarnations, because it's mostly rehashing the story. I've seen Macross Zero, and my overall rating of it is meh. The Macross series fell prey to the Gundam Syndrome, endless rehashing of the same story all over again.
The Tytania series looks promising when it comes to modern space operas, but it's a little too sedate when compared to Banner of the Stars series and even the grand daddy LoGH.

in a sense it might be rehashed but, contrary to gundam franchise where you have a crapload of timelines, atm only Macross II movie has diverted from continuity.
every other macross there belongs to the same continuity, with Zero being the very first one and ending on frontier, in terms of chronological order. It is interesting since you pass through several stages of human space colonization and their contact with other alien races after their initial contact with Protoculture (and an actual Varja) in said Macross Zero.
that and, according to Macross Frontier, we still don't know what happened to SDF Macross 1 that went dark, together with all the characters you know from the original series (yes, Minmay whereabouts are unknown too). ---

Well Macross is always centered around on certain themes such as the power of music, romantic triangles and current world events.
Such as Macross Plus having deep space colonization and artificial intelligence while Macross Frontier (the recent one) has shortage of natural resources and trans humans. I never understood why Grace wanted godlyhood so badly though if she was already technically immortal and had the entire universe in her fingertips. She's extremely like an Eve Online Capsuleer, including the clones and cybernetic implants.
The show has to stay true to its roots in the end. They do add some twists to the formula and every show they focus on something the fans like in particular. Macross 7 had basically everything over the top and cheesy about Macross multiplied by 1000, some people love it and some people hate it. Even if you don't like a show, odds are you'll like the next theme they pick.
Also lets not forgot that Macross only is around every 5 years or so. It's like the anime olympics or world cup, everyone stops to watch. Meanwhile Gundam one or two shows come out every year. Both shows can't be compared really.

I was introduced to this style of cartoon when it was 1985 with Robotech and fell in love instantly. Now I really like the Macross series and know Robotech is bits and pieces of Macross. But I love Robotech even more and Can't wait for the LIve action movie to come out. Once you get this protoculture in your blood, It's there to stay.

Well Robotech is a mish mash for 3 different anime series. First one is SDF Macross but in all fairness there isn't much difference other than a few name changes and different meaning of Protoculture. I recommend you watch the original SDF Macross then you can go on to watch all the other Macross stuff. Macross DYRL is bloody brilliant you can find it all online to watch just google it. Plus the music is better in the original than Robotech. I really like the Macross music, I got a bunch of Fire Bomber songs and OSTs of SDF Macross and Frontier.

Well, Macross was made before Mechwarrior so..
Mechwarrior Warhammer and Marauder.
Macross Destroid and Officer Pod.
Though I don't like Harmony Gold, they're ****s for doing what they did to Macross, they're sitting on distribution rights and not doing anything with the Robotech franchise. ---------------------------

Originally by: Leviathan9 Though I don't like Harmony Gold, they're ****s for doing what they did to Macross, they're sitting on distribution rights and not doing anything with the Robotech franchise.
Quote: One of the stranger aspects of all of this was how Harmony Gold was able to gain the US trademark for Macross simply by defending the rights to Robotech. At the time, Japan and the US did not have reciprocity for copyrights, and Bandai/Big West (the owners of Macross) had sublicensed the international distribution rights to Tatsunoko, who licensed all aspects of Macross except the Japanese model kits to Harmony Gold. Bandai also licensed several mecha designs to FASA for use in BattleTech, and they were incorporated and used in the miniatures game. Harmony Gold sued FASA for incorporating these designs, citing their license from Tatsunoko. The suit was successful, and the designs (now known as "The Unseen") were withdrawn. Big West subsequently successfully sued Tatsunoko, as their license to Macross was originally only to cover the original animation content of Macross, and not any derivative content based thereon.
The end result of the convoluted legal snarl:
Harmony Gold can continue to release the original Robotech stories, and can release their own DVDs of the original Macross in the US, but cannot create derivative works based on Macross (or its Big West stablemate Southern Cross). However, they can create derivative content based on Mospeada, which was wholly owned by Tatsunoko in the first place. In addition, they effectively have veto rights over Macross merchandise and series that are not covered by the original license ù which has put all the sequels since Macross Plus in Licensing Hell. (This has not made them popular.)
Consequently Harmony Gold's more recent sequels, most notably the completely original feature-length film Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles, are all set in or after the part of the Robotech timeline drawn from Mospeada.
The rights have recently been purchased by Warner Brothers with some speculation about a live action movie in development.
