does anyone agree with me that some ships need to be redesigned or scrapped and replaced completely ?
name the ugliest ships you hate and think should be re-skinned !
for example the bellicose comes to mind as lazy designing ...
maybe ccp could do more player 'design a new ship' competitions like they did recently

Edited by: Larry Wickes on 26/04/2011 13:46:02 I think everyone would agree with the idea of the Revenaught being redesigned. Some would say that it actually looks decent, but that's not the point, and by point, that's just what I mean!
This ship is lacking spikes which every other typical Sansha ship has, which is the defining quality of the Sansha people!

Aesthetics are 100% subjective. No matter who designs the ships some people will think they are pretty, and some people will think they are ugly.

In contradiction to general state of p[eople, i think the "looks" are important in a visual experience (i dont want to be blind xD).... id say in this order
-Raven (cos tey are everywhere and make the world look terrible) -Dominix, (give it more detail, but in high res, with sheen) -Imicus/Helois (dont need to explain here lol) -Ibis -Hyperion (remove it's anus shaped wings) -Proteus (give it some wings) -Apoc (It think it looks like an ineffective peg leg):P:P -Phoenix (the blob in the blob) -Machariel (again.. ghive it some High res.. looks dumb in low, like an overly large, but blurry kids plush toy)

This shows that aesthetics are objective, right?
If you think Apoc, Mach and Hyperion are ugly, your opinions contradict majority views, much less being objective. And you missed Moa.

I like the moa and the caracal.... -moa looks like it's got a pack of sausages and the morning paper ready to fire at your face :)... - caracal looks quite light and capable of performing HAC duties....
Just that thing on the hype, it's wings.. SHEESH!... anus shaped extension... a.prolapsed.rectum then the Apoc... which shouldn't be flat at the back... and it's got a dodgy flappy paddle thing under it's front, in no way would it win that prize they had other week :P ....And the machariel.. it's BLURRY.. and lacks any real edgyness that a cynabal or dramiel possess.
Although the mach thing would be better if they increased the res somewhat, the hype if it didn't have it's wings, and the apoc woould be fine if it didn't make so many anti-feng shui like mistakes of ultimate failure.
But wat can I say, most people think Christina Aguilra is the hottest, and that you can't have the news unless they are pumping a gazillion adverts and flashing lights in your face... or that, it's important to have a politican that looks like some1 off the movies.. :P... yes i am in the minority, but wat we see.. aint pretty lol ^^^

Changes to others are fine, but these represent the very worst looking ships in the game. Worst of the worst? Celetis. I really hope it was made by a blind guy. No excuse otherwise.

Don't worry, even Caldari don't like Caldari ships.

Raven: It looks so...fugly...It lacks the awe of the Rokh and the sleekness of a Scorpion. It just looks....BAD!
Apocalypse: I never liked its design and I'm an Amarr pilot. It's like...someone took a big bite out of it. *Farmer: That's why I'm selling it. It has a big bite out of it*
Typhoon: It looks like someone took a barrel, put some propulsion on it and then put scaffolding on it.
Omen: Is that side thing really necessary?
Caracal: For a missile cruiser, it looks...like someone took the design pages and folded them a few times to make the Caracal.
Magnate: This is really nitpicky....but why are the turrets misplaced? They couldn't put them in an X formation? The same goes for the Harbinger. -------------------------------------------------- I am the Love Angel, Wedding Peach, and I am very displeased by your lack of love! |

If by 'decent design' you meant a ship that has no business being able to fly straight... Now it at least looks the part.

I would imagine you don't like Gallente ships because, like most other human beings on the planet, you like symmetry. Me too. So many Gallente ships aren't symmetrical and it grates on people's nerves, just slightly. Like the Tristan's cockpit on the right arm, what in the world...why not put it in the middle, in the reactor-looking thing. The catalyst looks like an old bomber from WWII that's been condensed into a single wing, and what's with the radar array?
Personal Opinions:
Quick disclaimer...I understand Minmatar ships were designed with the "scrap heap, find anything you can and strap it to a warp drive and some guns" theory in mind. It's part of the game, I accept it and actually like most of the ship designs, however...a couple of them look like they had a complete ship, it looked good, and then they added something which made it look silly. See below.
Nightmare - ugly, yes, but I'd fly it. It makes it more terrifying. It's not supposed to be pretty.
All Caldari Cruisers. I don't see the point. Caracal is alright but looks like you could snap it in half, looks more like something you'd see skimming across the water than flying through space.
Drake - it's just too thin. I love the design, but nowhere do I see enough space for all of those missiles.
Cyclone - little pointy wing tips? :(
Hurricane - alternative to the feet that are stapled along the sides would be nice. Star Destroyer look is cool.
Burst - seriously. come on guys.
Raven - eh. Could use a redesign. The only thing that really gets me with the Raven are the pointy things sticking out of it for no apparent reason.
Naglfar - way too vertical. Wayyy too vertical.
Celestis - enough said.
I would mention the other Gallente cruisers but the "mutated pregnant marine mammal" look with all the smooth green metal is kind of nice. I will say the Exequror could use some slight tweaks.
Tempest - what? The long cockpit outrig makes me sad. Slight redesign needed, I like what they were trying to do with it but I don't like what came out.
Ibis - looks out of place when compared to other Caldari ships, in my opinion.
Brutix - ugly, mean old man chin attached to some wings. Definitely one of the meanest looking ships in EVE, don't know if I would change it though.

I'm sure most people can accept asymmetry. The truly offensive designs - Celestis, Dominix, Moa - are just fundamentally bad design concepts paired with uninspired, sloppy execution.

Edited by: Lidia Prince on 26/04/2011 18:32:25 There's a lot of REALLY outdated models, some of them are around 11 years old. Barely visible most of the time fighters and fighter-bombers have much more detailed models than most frigate/cruiser/industrial class ships, and that's pretty sad. But at least CCP are slowly, but working on it, they did amazing job with Scorpion and I hope that most of ships will get same treatment sooner or later.
And I really hope that Caldari will be first in polishing queue. Drake, Rokh, Tengu, Scorpion, capitals - in my vision that's how their ships should look like. And I hope that the main idea of Raven form will remain as it is, just updated and polished in needed places. It's asymmetric and strange, but has some charisma in it.

I would actually say that of all the ships out there, Caldari ones are the most realistic in terms of what spacecraft will look like. Little fluff, simple designs.

Well, yes, that's exactly why I prefer their designs to others. But still, ships like Bantam, Kitsune, Moa or Blackbird look way too bulky and strange for their navy. They're way off Caldari's practical simplicity.
Gallentes... that's just how they were designed, bulky. At least most of their ships are fitting their theme. Just like Minmatar.

Worst Models - Revenant (looks like a turd) Avatar (too short and stumpy. would be fine if it were stretched a bit) Aeon (first time I saw this I thought my client was bugged) Bellicose
Some other ships I think look kinda weird, off, or derpy, but fit their theme well (the flying scrapheaps, asymmetrical Caldari ships, and glazed play-doh Gallente ships). Few other models I just find boring, notably the Phoenix and the two Minmatar carriers)
Worst Skins - Navy Issue Gallente ships - Fleet Issue Minmatar ships - Any of the eye-searingly bright silver Minmatar ships - New coloring of Sansha ships. The old color scheme was imo one of the best, if not the best in the game, hands down. Now they just look like they're covered in baby poop.
On a side note, I think that the comically large turrets on frigates completely ruin the design of some of the sleeker ones (I'm looking at you Dramiel)

Guess you meant amarr?
Engines in line with a long ship. Asymetry is a *****, causes a lot more stress on the frame than you would like because engines are pushing different parts of it forward.
'realistic' space ships are much more likely to be long and thin. And have a lot of issue with heat dissipation.
They wont be nearly as exquisite as most we see around in... any space fiction, really.
