i'm getting a lot of conflicting advice from people, and internet articles as to which ship is best for mission running ... i'm so confused as to which ship i should be training and aiming for.
some say golem, some say tengu, some say rattlesnake, some say machariel
some say dominix - because you can run lvl 4's tank aggro, and go afk while drones do the work (wat about respawns though ? don't they kill your drones if you are afk ?)
cost is not an issue for me, as i am willing to grind to get the best ship that will breeze through missions
(i would prefer the shortest training route, least skill intensive, and if it's possible to go afk and be lazy lol ... but if this is not possible i'm willing to train up to use the best so i can do missions with no real danger of losing the ship, efficently, and earn isk fast !!)
just please clear this matter up once and for all guys !! /o\

Depends a lot on what space you are currently in at the moment.
Also you cannot have fast AND afk. ------------------------------------------------ Miners/Industrialists : Get back ! |

ok can you give me a breakdown of which ship to use in safety when you are afk ?
and which one to use when not afk (ie. fastest) ?

Anyone that says the rattlesnake is the best/fastest should be ignored.
The best/fastest overall is the CNR with the mach a very close 2nd.
1. They both have selectable damage type, CNR gets truly selectable damage type though.
2. They both have excellent range, although the CNR will out DPS a mach past the ~40km mark.
Simple answer CNR.

I flew a Machariel for a while, the range was dissapointing on some missions, and it wasn't cost effective to use RF ammo. I think the best setup would be to have:
Machariel for close range missions Nightmare for the longer range Sansha/Blood missions CNR for the rest.

Fastest mission running is not afk mission running.
The fastest mission running nowdays is either the Machariel or the Tengu. Depends a lot on the mission and your skills. There are arguments for both here, particularly because of rat resists.
The fastest afk mission running is probably the rattlesnake. Although there is argumento for a dominix too. Either way - aggro the whole thing, tank it, let drones loose, go read a book.
None of those will be fast to fly well with.
Fastest to fly well depends really on how your skills are today.
If you are starting from scratch, your best bet is aiming for a Raven. It is easy to get into, and somewhat easy to fly well enough to make money reasonabily quick in lv 4s. The natural progressions of a Raven is the CNR and the Golem - both use the same skills.

Realistically - i.e. no 150M ISK Faction Battleships or 400M ISK Tech 3's - b/c new players aren't getting there soon.
Raven: Period. Follow this method...
1. Fit Missile launchers 2. Fit MWD 3. Fit Active Tank w/ mission-specific resists 4. Warp into mission room 5. Activate MWD and keep a 50-60km range for as long as you can. 6. Smile as you see all the misses/scratches 7. Laugh as things die before they get close 8. ??? 9. Profit

he said fast/best, your method is completely ******ed and slow. to the op train for a vargur/mach, pali/nightmare, cnr/golem, or tengu, those ships complete missions the fastest it just depends on your preference of weapons.

For killing everything machariel(or vargur)
For blitzing I've heard the tengu is the king.
For close range (under 35 km) BS rich missions the golem(t2 torps will kills a BS in 2-3 salvos)
For EM/thermal only enemies nightmare or paladin.
For 90% AFK the rattlesnake, ishtar , gila. Very slow missioning though...
For low skill points low setup price the domi. - heavy drones and t1 skills (80 mil or so for the whole ship) will probably let you kill most missions no problem.
Also the domi can be pimped to run lvl 4s fast but it will take maxed out skills and lots of isk- better go with machariel.

Check my first post in this thread. I was curious about the same so I did some tests on Sisi. It was a Sansha mission. So if you don't do missions in Amarr space leave out the NM. The whole thread could be interesting for you maybe. -

Originally by: freshspree Mach is the king. No contest.
There is contest, it's the CNR.
Because some missions have spawns outside of 40km.
And Because the mach can't deal pure damage type and has a weak option for kinetic.
It's weaknesses compared to the mach are: defenders, mobility and outright damage inside of 40km.
Just because the CNR is boring and obvious, you can't rule it out, with the right fit(T2 cruise, 2 T2 Rigors, 1 Flare, 1 TP, 4 BCUs and 3 sentry drones) it's utterly utterly epic...
I say this allot, but if I could only have 1 mission ship it would be the CNR, it's the only one I would be happy to fly in all missions.
If you did want to cover all the bases and have the very best/fastest ship for all conditions you only need a Nightmare, CNR, Golem, Tengu and Mach, not all that hard to get really if you go with sensible fits.

ok to clear matters up ill put the question in this format and you put the name of a ship next to each one - /o\
mission running
fastest blitzer - most cost effective - least skill intensive - best for afk - prepared for all situations (eg. fighting frigs, and bs) - best balance -
erm .. and put any more you can think of

Blitz: Tengu/Mach/NM (depends on what rat type you're shooting at, how much you need to kill, and how far gates are from one another) Cost effective: Most battleships Least Skill intensive: Raven/Domi AFK: Dual Rep sentry domi All situations: CNR Best Balance: Subject for repeated and unquestionably annoying debates.
And for the record i've flown all of the ships listed on one of my characters at some point, none make mission running any less of a chore after a few hours. Fly whatever faction bs or marauder tickles your fancy.

Tengu hands down. Gets to missions faster, gets to acceleration gates/mission objectives faster.
Quote: most cost effective
Raven, Dominix, Abaddon, Drake

Same as above.
Quote: best for afk
I'd like to stress that AFK missions is basically the worst way to make ISK with a combat character. One of the bonused drone boats (Gila, Ishtar, Rattler, Domi)
Quote: prepared for all situations (eg. fighting frigs, and bs)
Cruise CNR, Tengu
...Then when you stopped to think about it. All you really said was Lalala. |

Edited by: Eisell on 28/04/2011 01:43:49 The Nightmare is my ship of choice for melting everything that's weak to EM damage. If you live in Amarr space it's really hard to beat.
For just about everything else, I can't ignore how impressive the Dominix is at every turn. most cost effective - It's one of the cheapest battleships in the game, yet it will stay competitive all the way up to a seriously pimped-out faction BS, provided you scale the gank well. least skill intensive - When you start out on a Domi, you can tank nearly anything with two Meta 4 LARs and chew through it with T1 drones. It might take an eternity, but so does everything else at that point. best for afk - The Domi is the standard by which AFK fits are measured. Perma-run a dual-LAR setup, get your drones good and angry, and have a drink. prepared for all situations - Drone ships are generally the winners here. They essentially have a set of weapons for every class of ship and every situation they go up against. The Domi pulls ahead of the others by having the heavy guns to bring down those BSes quicker best balance - Not quite sure what you mean here. The Domi is supremely flexible, able to armor or shield tank, fit nearly any type of gun, and still do great. It can also have as fat a tank or as much damage as you like. As far as game balance, the Domi may be a little out of whack, but it does have the classic jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none issue, and there are far bigger problems out there.

For those who think the range of the Mach sucks.. try to think outside the Box.. fit 1400s Tadaaa + something like 35 km optimal and 85 km falloff + Faction Ammo suddenly became very viable + dps around 800 without drones or implants .. add sentries + instapop the 300k angel BSs for fun
For those who say that paper dps will suffer because of the worse tracking compared to Autos: The long reload time does not have to be a bad thing .. it allows you ample time to line up your next shot, lowering angular V. Perfect hit. another BS gone. Just remember not to group your weapons ingame. Use a makro mapping all guns to a key or mousebutton, or you'll waste dmg.
I've never met a more perfect mission ship (for me) I was in love even before the Projectile Boost. And even after the Speed nerf when the Nanoage ended (in a way). I phear the Machariel Nerf that has to come soon. I mean it's just so awesome! (c: ____________ nerf metagaming, boost fun |

How about the paladin for EM damage missions? Same damage dealing as the NM, but with the tractor beam range bonus for loot/salvage.

I mission in Angle space, and I love my Vargur. Insta popping frigates 70KM out while you wait for the ships you want to salvage to enter 40km is nice. Since its angle rats, they almost always burn inside 20km to die for me. I have flown a CNR, and those are also very good ships, although I'd think they require a bit more micro management with missile volleys at long ranges. Tengues are nice for missions with few BS and many BCs and Cruisers. Never flown a golem, but I wager they are better than CNR's with more micro-management within 40km.
If you are aiming for the fastest to get into skill wise (for a missioning alt on a main account) I'd go CNR with some deadspace boosters. If you're willing to buy a character and the ship It all depends on what factions you plan on missioning for. Vargurs/machs eat angles, Nightmares eat sancha, Ravens (and its other flavors) tank guristis like no ones business and have the range to hit back. Domis can do it all...albet a bit slower.

To be fair, the Ishtar is just as good an AFK-boat as the Domi, it's just not as accessible to people that would prefer to spend most of their skill points on another race and/or pvp ships. ---

Edited by: Judicator Saturnius on 28/04/2011 03:23:38 I'm a big fan of the dominix overall myself. In a full-on sentry/gank setup it's very hands-on and you always have the option of slapping on two reppers and going afk a while if that suites you.
Kinda sad I got rid of my gallente alt, but I didn't need the extra account anymore and he was not worth loosing out on all that isk (people still pay big for anything that could be mis-construed as training for a Nyx ).

It's a pretty situational ship. Your range is capped by torpedoes and you suffer against missions with lots of smaller ships. On missions with lots of close range BSs, though, it's phenomenal (though juggling painters can still be a pita).
Overall, the Machariel really is that good. I was skeptical but once I hopped in to one... damn.

As somebody who has flown a torp Golem for about six month I have to say this is plain wrong. Except for AE where every ship spawns a few km outside the 40km range (it hasnt always been that way -> Golem nerf) and the first room of WC there isnt a range problem if you put a bit of thinking into doing the mission right. And in the first room of WC even the CNR has a range problem without a signal amp. Also a torp Golem can single volley many BC/cruisers and even some frigs. Even jamming guristas arent much of a problem if you take out the jammers first.
