So I've been playing for a few months now and I understand most of the game, buti'm starting to get into planetary interaction. I understand the basics and what not, but just dont see the isk rolling (profit). Also I'm not to sure what to do with the items i gather or what they're used for, other than sell it in the market (which is not much) and use for POS (which I dont have). So if there is anyone that can give me some insight on how I can benifit from PI? I know it may not make me rich but if it can make me a few mil in profit, that would be great.

You seam to have two little misconceptions right there. First there is a difference between income and profit. You will most likely never make any profit in EVE.
Secondly you are competing with players that are willing to risk their ships to be shot down. They can gather planet goo from planets with 5x the yield.

I don't think the OP is trying to compete (though i do realise that the whole game is one big competition) he just wants to know how to make money from PI. I am making plenty income in EVE and apart from missile replacement costs (negligible) it's all profit, to the extent that when my subscription expires this time round I will be plexing. In which case we have real life profit too!
The big question being asked here is how does he make significant money from PI? By that I take it he wants to see his wallet growing.
I don't know squat about PI, but would be interested to know if it can make any money in Empire.

You can make money in Empire. You can make more money ... depending on how slick you are, in lower security areas ... you just have greater risk.
PI is not about getting rich quick. If you think that you will be disappointed.
PI is about long term passive income.
You set up your colonies - let them go about their business - then come along after a while and scoop up the goods.
That's it. Something that will work for you in the back ground while you are doing something else.
There is a certain amount of start up cost and effort but after that there isn't much to it.
If you think about PI as a supplemental income to whatever else it is you're doing - you'll be happy with it. Greater expectations will lead to disappointment.
Of course, given the passive nature of the income, it is the kind of thing that benefits from having multiple characters involved in it. Each can potentially have six planets - that's 18 on one account if you have all three doing it. Of course - managing 18 planets is going to be a lot more work than managing two but you'll also make more money.
Check out the Science and Technology forum for more information. There are a lot of PI threads there now.

If you're in empire the money is in manufacturing higher level PI products from raw materials and/or low tier PI products, which you buy on the market. This is because raw material extraction rates in highsec are terrible compared to 0.0/w-space. So you want to configure your highsec planets for manufacturing only. Exactly what you should be manufacturing depends on the current market conditions, which I am not going to spell out and are variable anyway as it's a player's market now. If you're in 0.0/w-space go for the raw materials. Always refine them 1 step to tier 1 products or you'll get killed by export taxes. A good choice for production is POS fuel, which is always in demand. Eve university has a good list of how the production chain is build up. ----- Malevolence. is recruiting.
