As i was shopping the market for new weapons for mt ship i started looking at weapons and charges specifically the dual 150 railguns and it hit me. The actual railgun size is the same as the single 150 so why does it use a Medium charge rather than the stock small charge. I know that everyone is going to say that its because the weapon mount is medium class, but that in itself does notmake sence given the "calibur" of the weapon is the same. In RL example the .50 Calibur sniper rifle is a single man protable operable weapon (small mount) The 50 calibu M2 Machinegun Is typically vehicle mount or 2 Man portable (medium mount) Parallel to the dual 150, single 150 rail question they are different mounts with different capabilities, yet the calibur size is the same, and the ammunition is the same and completely interchangeable.
I guess i just have too much time on my hands to ponder this but it just makes me sit and go Hrmmm.

Why use 1200mm and 1400mm artillery the same shell then?
Ammo doesn't make sense in this game at all. But would you want each ammo type for every single weapon type out there? That'd be insane. You couldn't find the ammo you need and nobody would produce ammo because only a select few would use each type.

Though there is a difference in the reference 1200 and 1400 don't bridge a gap between med and large they are both definitely in the large cal. Group wheras the 150, and dual 150 cal are in both medium and small groups.

Simple reason; Every gun having its own ammo type would be a logistical nightmare. ---------------------------

But you could make duel 150s use small charges and duel 250s use medium.

Perhaps ammo has an elastic caliber?
In truth it is imaginable that the caliber of a large round is the size of the smallest caliber barrel it fits in and there is something within the firing mechanism of a larger barrel that allows the round to be centered... though in a moving gun it would not be wise to fire a round smaller than the barrel, but the guns themselves probably have stabilizers of their own. Who knows?

As for why 2 guns with the same caliber would use 2 different ammo sizes, well thats an easy one. The answer, size = volume. Caliber is merely a measure of diameter, a 1 dimensional measure (in reality, the barrel is circular so it's more a measure of 2 dimensions), whereas size is 3 dimensional. The medium ammo would just be fairly longer.
