That's a great question Starmyst, thanks for giving me the opportunity to explain the logic behind that requirement. As you well know, battlefield strategies evolve over time often in response to enemy tactics. That being said, we are currently witnessing a decline in the use of the popular Alphamael battleship and a resurgence of the Hellcat in large fleet fights.
As a result our pilots ability to fly an armor tanked battleship is necessary for two main reasons:
First, you will simply be able to participate in more fleets, shoot more faces, and have more fun. Of course you don't have to be in a particular ship to join a given fleet, however, you will forfeit logistical support and you will likely be kicked from the fleet to make room for an armor ship if the fleet exceeds 255 pilots. Also, you run an increased risk of being called primary target by the enemy Fleet Commander simply because it's easier to say "get the maelstrom," than it is to single out an abbadon from two-hundred of them.
Second, our corp currently provides fully fit ships on contract in deployed systems to our members. For the most part these ships are produced and transported internally. Logistically it is far easier to focus on a few ship types rather than try to meet ship requests for every type our members can fly.
In short, Starmyst, we'd like to avoid having our members join a fleet, get primaried popped and podded, and find themselves stuck on the front lines, deep in 0.0 without a ship to fly. The ability to fly an armor tanked ship will simply make it more fun to be a Zebra.
