Use an alt if you must, but I'm really curious about this.
Say you're paid to dec a target, and your target offers you twice the amount of isk to leave them be. Would you break your contract for the promise of more isk? I can't heal stupid

You're assuming that the ISK is the only reward. For a mercenary corp to break a contract, the bribe would have to not only be greater than their initial payment, but it would also have to be sufficient to dissuade them from the enjoyment of pew pew.

Meh... this one's easy.
An honest merc refunds original client and accepts new client
A dishonest merc keeps both sums and shoots whoever he/she wants
There you go... Just one way to find out which you're dealing with.

A merc with a reputation to back off on contracts probably wouldn't get as many contracts. This reduces both enjoyment of PVP and future ISK, so I'd say they would most likely just keep the doubled amount.

I would advise the wardec contracting corp of the situation and ask that they at least match the amount offered from the wardec'd corp and go from there.
If they cant raise the ISK, return their ISK, and take the ISK from the wardec'd corp and call off the wardec.
Else, you can honor the original contract.
It depends on how much you value the reputation of your corp.
Continue with the contract and your showing that your merc corp is reliable and trustworthy, ensuring to an extent that you'll get future business.
A reputation is hard to earn but easy to lose.
You could take the counter offer and reneg on the original deal, but that may harm your reputation, from both sides... one saying you are unreliable and reneg, and the other, that your a pushover for ISK...
Personally, I would honor the original deal... I may change my tactics in the future, ex. negotiate with the wardecee before confirming with the wardecor that you'll take their contract... perhaps...

Unless u want to break a contract/ure word, u simply do ure "time" and do the contract out its time. Then u can simply offer ure services to the dude offering twice as much. U cant do a 180 mid contract periode and still say ure forfilling the contract:P
also for who ever said just refound the client and cancell the job, I still would say that pretty much break of ure word/contract. When u accepted a job, only reason to break it would be some kinda blue on blue from the dude that hired you/or him purposly trying to get the merc killed giving him false info, or something like that. its very few excuses that valid in my eyes.

Finish the contract then ask if the victim of it wants payback.

in a scenario where the victim tryes to bribe you/pay you to turn side, unless Im a director and honourbond to keep my word, I would simply take his isk and keep shooting him. There is many ways of doing damage to the target , but all in all its all about inflicting isk damage:P
I'm dreadfully sorry but what the **** did you just type? I can't heal stupid

When your wardec target offers you twice as much you agree and take the isk from them and continue with the war. After all this is most generally why people hire mercs, which is to affect an opposing corps bottom line. So by going along and taking their money then continuing the war you are fulfilling the terms of your original contract to the best of your abilities.

Royal Hiigs wouldn't sell out like that, nor would any other self-respecting merc corp tbh. The only corps who'd do that are ones where contract ISK is distributed amongst the members AND the leadership is ethically shaky. IMHO.

You guys would be terrible mercs, when people hear you extort the original contractor for more isk and/or break the contract, your chances of being hired go way down because you are obviously scamming and also not really into pvp.

Noir. gets offers like that all the time, I just laugh them off. Breaking contracts is bad buisiness and considered scamming by the merc community.

We distribute contract isk to members and leadership, doesn't really have anything to do with our professional commitment to fufill our contracts and not backstab our employers. ---

The best solution is to ask your client what they want to do about it. I always ask clients if they have terms for ending the war in the beginning, and if the target offers me isk I'll ask the original person hiring me if they want to accept it. Most people are pretty happy to have some damage done and get the war paid for by the target.
No one wants to hire mercs who turn around and screw them over for a little isk, and less people hiring you means less wars, which is never fun.

Contract is a contract, once you take it you keep your word & hold the end of your bargain. Isk is not the ultimate currency in Eve, reputation is. And a contract break is bad for reputation, so in the end less isk to all. -

Depends on how much ISK. If hypothetically, someone offered you 100 bil to drop the wardec (???), you might just decide that you've had enough of being a merc and would rather be a super-rich pirate or w/e.
However, I am under the impression that most merc corps exist primarily for the pew and secondarily for the money associated with it. (which isn't usually much after dec and ship costs) So short of a ridiculous offer (which you would be an idiot to make in the first place) or offering money to a really pathetic half-arsed merc corp (who aren't worth paying off anyway) I don't see it happening.

My thought would is: Mercs should have a clause saying that if the targets try to buy them off that the contractor should be made aware of the offer and if the contractor agrees to it that: 1) Contractor gets his money back 2) The buyoff is split between the mercs and the contractor in some way
And then if you still wanted them dead (or they didnt die enough), the contractor could just rehire mercs. Either the same ones on an alt, or new ones. If that were to happen people would probably stop buying off mercs though.

We had this 2 weeks ago, but a contract is a contract and must be fulfilled to the best of your ability. We won't contact the target Corp afterwards and offer our services either as to me it is still unethical. However, if the target Corp contacts us independently after the dec, then it's a clean slate - and a contract is a contract! On another point - we also share the contract sum between the involved members. But if you become a Merc for the isk - you're in the wrong profession!!

Do the A-Team change loyalty based on larger payments? NO!
So why would people who are role playing Hannibal, BA, Murdoch and Face change their loyalties based on payment?
Role players do not break out of character just because you want them to!

Take the money and keep the war dec going. You're being paid to destroy your war targets, through whatever means necessary. Be it infiltration and absconding with ships, modules, or what-have-you, or blowing up ships, it doesn't matter.
There have been many public incidents in the past of merc corps infiltrating and cleaning out a war target corp. The one that comes to mind involved GHSC in particular. This isn't frowned upon. It's not scamming. if they are stupid to think paying you off will cause the war dec to cease, then whatever.
Now, if the mercenary corporation writes a ransom letter and you pay, and they still continue to dec you, that's the scam. They came to you and said, "This is what you can do to satisfy us, our client, and yourselves." You didn't go to them and offer a bribe. ***** ***** ***** *****

I can't believe the lack of innovation and creative thinking shown in all the replies so far
The first thing you do is notify your client what's up, take the money from the target and switch the dec over to your client. Then after a few days you tell the original target that the original client has offered you twice more (even if they haven't), and that you're switching decs again (unless they pay you more ofc). Continue to do that until you've milked the original target for all they're willing to pay.
If the situation lends itself to going further, the next step would be to get both corps so ****ed at you that they forget their differences and pool their resources to take you out. You can then exploit that situation with a pre-positioned spy, or a well timed mail from a second fake merc corp offering to take out the "evil mercs" that they've heard are dishonoring contracts for a discount. - - - Dian'h Might - C&Ps resident "internet kleptomaniac" |
