Imagine getting an offer that sounds reasonable, yet a little to good to be true. Come out to Fountain, rent a system, enjoy the billions of ISK that are possible through ratting, mining, and PvP. Imagine it coming from an Alliance you consider honorable and have heard good things about.... well, an Alliance corp member. And all for a low price of less than 5B ISK for six months. Tempting, is it not?
This is EVE.
Where white collar crime is unpunished, unlike - at times - in the real world. Abounding with lessons learned and where paranoia is a high virtue. Where betrayal of corp mates and Alliances is history in the making. No going to jail, just the occasional podding. If you can get through all the gate camps, hostiles, and territorial Alliances that lie between you and your con-podder target . Coax them out of the station - and then, maybe, if you can... exterminate them without their corp mates showing up to save them. Fearful of the wardecc that may happen while the con-podder lies safe in null-sec and you lay exposed in hi-sec.
Welcome to The World of EVE-Scam. Where the payouts are huge and the risks are minimal.
So, let us take a look at the anatomy of a rental space scam.
So you have a hi-sec corp looking to get into null-sec for PvP fun and Industry. You are recruiting and put up an advertisement in the corporate forums - pilots wanted. You, hapless CEO, are sorting through the occasional pilot application, weeding out the potential corp-thieves from pilots looking to join for legitimate reasons. One day, you check your inbox and you see this...
"Potential Alliance Offering
Good afternoon, I was reading through the CAOC on the forums and stumbled into your corporation, and I realized your corporation and it's members might benefit greatly from renting in some our new space in Delve, or helping our industrial backbone in Fountain.
Your corporation seems to specialize in areas that we could benefit from (particularly the smuggling, and the additional mining/production capabilities that you seem to have) as well as offering your corporation a chance to move into extremely safe and untapped potential in Delve or Fountain. We have a WH group that's been running Improved and Strong boosters around, but having a few people who can do that regularly would be a nice change of pace. Not to mention, we can easily foot a portion of your rent thanks to that.-á
Let me know if this is something that's relevant to your interests, Fly safe! "
You, the CEO of a small carebear hi-sec corporation, looking to get into nullsec and become a nullbear PvPer and Industrialist, are interested. The offer is what you are looking for. Then begins the real battle. Is this is a scam or the real deal? You hit "Reply" and wait. The offer comes and the offer is generous.
Mariya, It's wonderful to hear that you may be interested! I'll go ahead and handle the number-side first, and then I'll shift to explaining a bit more of what life would be like, what we can offer you and how we can comfortably settle you. Also, I'll explain the details involving sovereignty that might help you decide if a lifestyle in our space would be easier for you than perhaps a lifestyle involving NPC 0.0 space, or particularly Lowsec.-á Taxation from the alliance is a strict 0% policy. This is based on the fact that you are renting the space and effectively "taxed" already. You may maintain any sort of taxation policy on the corporate level that pleases you. Life is expensive in 0.0, but it also reaps some of the greatest rewards. We don't see any point in excessively charging you for these sorts of things.-á Rent will vary from system to system, and constellation to constellation. On average, you can expect a single system to run 2bn a month, and a prime ratting system/Seeded outpost with huge benefits, to run closer to 3-4bn a month. A few systems with pricetags that I would suggest for you: (Each of these figures is in Billions per month.) 1.-á38IA-E: -á2.75 (-0.2 Sec, 12 Belts, 1 Ice belt) 2. F-88PJ 3.84 (-0.9 Sec, 11 Belts)
However, Considering the excessive usefulness of having an actual industrial corp to fill these systems, as opposed to your typical renting corporation, I'm going to append the discount we typically apply to high traffic/pipe systems of -40% for the following rates: 1. 38IA-E: 1.65 2. F-88PJ 2.31
There are absolutely 0 PVP expectations of any renter. There are no CTAs, there are no mandatory ops, there are no alarm clock ops. There aren't even market PVP restraints. Feel free to mark your product at whatever value you believe it's worth. (This is typically how our renters tend to make their fortunes, because in spite of the excellent JF services we offer, most of the pilots would rather buy locally than import and utilize at a slightly later date.) Any pilot who wishes to fly in alliance level operations will be treated the same as any other member of the alliance with regards to ship reimbursement policies. We're happy to have you PVP with us!
A renter will pay for their last month and their first month at the same time, as well as any number of additional months they would like. For each month you pay in advance, you take a -10% discount from the price per month. (For example, if you would like to pay for 3 months in advance for 38IA-E at our current rate it would cost a total of -á1.65 * .9 = 1.485 * 3 = 4.455bn, or for 6 months: 1.65 * .5 = .825 * 6 = 4.95bn) This basically encourages our renters to join us for the long haul. You can pay for up to the first 6 months in advance. Otherwise, rent is paid month to month, on the 1st of each month by 23:59 EVE time....

Just finishing up the post. Seems that EVE forums lost one of the posts. Do come back and read the rest.

yeah. It was an idea. However, NPC space still presents its own hazards. Take Serpentis Prime. You can spend more time being hunted because everyone is afraid of Alliance spais!!!

Did it really take you that many posts to simply state that a TEST corp tried to scam you? The warning and all is nice, albeit common knowledge for the most part, but you could've saved yourself a lot of time and exercised some brevity. |

Uhm ... that's what one calls a contradiction right there.

But at least you really learn something. Plus, your stuff isn't locked up in a nulsec station when your mighty overlords get steamrolled by another coalition while you're on holidays. /edit: I'm not talking about that crappy sole NPC island in Fountain. Go to Syndicate, or Venal, or Stain. |

Alliance, as in overall. Corp and members... not so much. |

Why the hell not? I was bored, tho, as I noted before,... I should have edited the other mail submits for brevity.

Venal was nice on an alt. Dodging Russians mostly. Roman Kalishnikov always seemed to be waiting. Even tranlated the band name "***** Riot" into Russian Cyrilic but it didn't seem to help. International relations.... some people just don't appreciate. The ****** that CCP insists on putting in there covers up a word to a punk band's name, so well... a woman's treasure box that most men want to get into. |

That was cool. Interesting to see the step by step of a rental scam.
Edit: Aaaand it's gone. The best part about this story, the evemails that reveal the anatomy of the scam, culled for breaking the rules. One of the more content-filled posts in this forum, gutted.

Why do you think external news sites are more frequented by experienced players, than this censored hovel of misinformation?
