So I've heard all about the wonderous webbing abilities of the Huginn, so after a long train I finally got in one and took it on a roam.
I have to say, my first impression was not a good one.
Although the extra range on the webs was ok, it really wasn't what I was expecting. I thought a Huginn was supposed to be able to web from halfway across the grid, when in reality it isn't as far as it seems.
I was wondering, what helps the Huginn's performance? Should I try to upgrade to T2 or even faction webs? If I'm going to use faction webs, should I go web strength or distance? How far should I train up my recon skill? (at 3 atm) Would a boosting alt help? Skirmish bonuses?
Or should I just ditch it altogether?
Any help would be appreciated.

If you're flying a t2 ship without the skill to 5, you're doing it wrong.
Heated T2 webs with skirmish links and recon 5 reach 71.7km.
Domination webs hit 107.6km.
Stop being bad and train recon to 5.

Recon 5 is very good but 4 is truly mandatory.
It's a gang ship, what does your gang have and need? |

Recon 4 min, 5 if possible.
DG webs are pretty cheap, considering the hull is 140mil. Fed navy is where its at, get a claymore or safespotted loki in your gang or even a BC in your gang to fit a skimrish link. Enjoy your 90km+ webs

At least get it to 4 and see if you like the ship. And don't forget the Rapier, and then you can decide if you want Recon 5 for all races, or to get a Loki. |

Don't mix extender and purger rigs - stick with extenders or fill a resist hole.
Recon 5 is well worth the time.

Lots of unrealistic stuff ITT, technically possible but not exactly a smart choice for a starting Huginn pilot who may not have the backing of a properly organised PVP corp. Probably the same stuff OP got fed in the first place thinking Huginns can web from 3 LY away.
@OP, the Huginn is more the "solo combat hunter", in a support role you're mostly better off using the Rapier due to it's cloak. In a fleet your tank depends on whether you have armour or shield logistics. The armour version lacks EHP and dps but makes up for that with a massive out of webs.
Shield version probably more logical and should look something like this, don't get talked into fitting 650's. Sure you'll do a little bit more damage at range but your tank will suffer and you will have issues with stuff upclose (something that might actually become a problem). You're support and in that role you need to stay alive and be able to (somewhat) take of stuff that's on your ass, the fact that you to a tad more dps at longer range is not a consideration.
[Rapier, Combat] Damage Control II Gyrostabilizer II Tracking Enhancer II Nanofiber Internal Structure II
Y-T8 Overcharged Hydrocarbon I Microwarpdrive Large Shield Extender II Large Shield Extender II Warp Disruptor II Fleeting Propulsion Inhibitor I Fleeting Propulsion Inhibitor I

Originally by: Darth McDarth I thought a Huginn was supposed to be able to web from halfway across the grid, when in reality it isn't as far as it seems.
The stories of Huginns catching Machs 90km away involve skirmish linked, faction or overheated webs, backing up a Lach's long point.
Quote: I was wondering, what helps the Huginn's performance?
Skirmish links, more than anything.
Quote: Should I try to upgrade to T2 or even faction webs?
Go with cheap faction first, T2 webs give a strength bonus not range. But losing a pair of Fed Navy's is painful when you are a first learning how to fly the Huginn and exactly what you can escape from.
Quote: If I'm going to use faction webs, should I go web strength or distance?
Fed Navy webs (the longest range 60% strength webs) are generally considered the standard.
Quote: How far should I train up my recon skill? (at 3 atm)
Recon IV if you aren't sure you are happy with flying it. Recon V is a long train for a role some people just flat out don't enjoy.
Quote: Would a boosting alt help? Skirmish bonuses?
Second only to the Recon V skill. Recon V with longest range faction web (Domination) reaches 60km. With maxed skirmish links a T2 web goes out to around 57km.

Get faction webs - and u want recon V as its one of those skills thats considered to be a must! - recon 5 and t2 webs = 40km range - get faction adn you can have 60km iirc

Recon IV is a minimum.
Get it, shouldnt be too long. If you enjoy flying the ship, you should get Recon V.
A faction web will also make you go that much further. 65m spent on a Minmatar web and you will be reaching 47km with 60% speed bonus - much better than your 28km with t2 today.
Faction webs give a *lot* to a Huginn. You really should avoid flying one withouth them.

Not related to webs, but the Huginn isnt a DPS ship, its support... gyro and BCU? I would scrap one (probably gyro) if not both. And if you are worried more about range, a TE will up your optimal/fall off. Just my 2 cents/isk. |
