The socket closed message is displayed when your client fails to receive five consecutive packets of data from the server. Of the petitions I have handled regarding this error, the vast majority of the problems have been with a players connection.
If you continue to have socket closed errors then please feel free to submit a petition in the Technical Support group and Connection category. We will be happy to guide you through running some diagnostics so we can determine where the problem is.

Had this before when i first came back to the game. It was 5 past the hr EVERY hr. After the last big patch it stopped doing it. It started again yesterday at 13 mins past the hour, EVERY hour. Today its 47 mins past the hr EVERY hr. As much as I appreciate your quick response, I really dont think its my connection. No other games i play drop me regularly at the exact same time every hour. Just FYI i have tried the change port workaround as suggested by CCP. And its made no difference. |

If the disconnections are happening with such regularity it could be that your router has Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) enabled.
Essentially DHCP will give your computer an IP address which it can use for a limited time, usually an hour. When this time has passed it will give your computer a different IP address. When a new IP address is given to your computer then this could cause you to loose connection to the server.
If you could take a look and see if DHCP is enabled in your router. If it is then try disabling it and hopefully that should solve the problem.
If DHCP is not enabled or the connection issues continue then please submit a petition and we will be happy to offer further assistance.

Perhaps you should look into ways for players to solve the issues with their connections because at this rate, I think the players' connections are going to lose you more than a handful of subscriptions.

If the connection problem is found to be not server related then all we can generally do is advise players to contact their ISP. If the problem is affecting a number of our players then we also generally contact the ISP in question to reinforce a desire for the issue to be fixed asap. GM Arcade | Customer Support

I've found that the EVE client is incredibly senstitive to internet outages, picking up on things that, say, barely bother a youtube stream.
A while back I had the hourly-DC problem. That was down to the ISP just like Arcade said. Seems sometimes they change things for more 'efficient' use of their IP addresses... and EVE is one of the few things that notices. |

So if I am running two clients on one machine and only one of the clients keeps getting the socket closed error repeatedly, can I safely assume it is not my hardware or my connection?

Whenever we get a "socket closed" the first thing we do is re-log. And it invariably works. Essentially we are opening a new socket. Why should we have to do this? Why cannot the client do it for us, automatically?
Also, that 5 packet loss trigger: Is there any setting we can set to make it bigger? http://vincentoneve.wordpress.com/ |

Been getting this error repeatedly over the day. Last time (about a year ago) it turned out to be a router problem however that doesn't seem to be the case this time. |

This is a CCP problem .
I had socket closed today went to the help channel and someone in there confirmed that it was being looked into. Someone else on my network was playing a different game at the time and that did not drop its connection. Also had someone that I play EVE with who resides in a different country asking me if the server was down as his connection dropped as well at roughly the same time mine did. So clearly different rig, different ISP infact a different country the common factor CCP/EVE.
Is it by any coincidence that CCP are working on DUST and linking it to EVE maybe this is all related. As far as I am concerned the only place DUST belongs is in a vacuum cleaner. |

As a network admin myself .. my yaw dropped to the desk after reading this.
When your DHCP server (in your router mostly) is set to 1 hour it will ask an extension to the lease in half of the lease time (half an hour in that case) and again after the whole hour .. and the time will be extended by another hour .. and NOT released and given a new one. Even if it would release it and give a new one it would give one from the top of the list .. That would basically give him the same one every time.
Little advice to GM Arcade .. dont give network advice when you dont know what your talking about !!! .. no seriously .. DONT. |

So have I, actually. Socket Closed itself has only happened maybe 3 times, but i am constantly Rubber-banding in space and having 10-15 second lock-ups in Station. Quite frankly, it is making the game unplayable, but it never happened at all before the patch.
I have reinstalled, restarted my router and modem, cleared caches, and pretty much everything i can think of except using a VPN.
PingPlotter results.
DxDiag
Not really sure what other information i might need to give to find a possible workaround. I really want to play, but with the Rubber banding and what i assume is packet loss, i just can't do anything without putting whatever I'm flying at significant risk. |

I have chosen fixed IP because of this (disconnections due to IP changes etc) but still doesn't explain all the issues I have with W8-64 and still waiting you guys to say a word about it on dedicated thread. |

Only had it on odd occasions before, but tonight it's just ridiculous. Nothing at my end has changed, so I'm not going to accept anything blaming my equipment or ISP.

It may be of use if people could list their service provider and country. I have spoken with numerous EVE friends of mine and of the 5 or 6 of them who have suffered this issue, all of them have been from the UK, and all of them are Virgin Broadband customers.
There was an issue I recall from a number of years ago whereby some ISP's were blacklisting any EVE data being sent across their networks, listing it as heavy P2P traffic and "dropping packets". These dropped packets resulted in players disconnecting from the EVE servers.
This may be something everyone here needs to consider, as it does seem the much more likely explanation for how so few people out the 400 thousand or so that play EVE are suffering such problems, rather than the chances of it being software related. In my case i'm Australian using a Canadian based ISP, iinet. However i did notice in my PingPlotter results (last post on the first page) that one of the servers i was routing through in the UK was repeatedly turning up "NA" instead of the Ping number, though i don't know what that means exactly since i haven't really used PingPlotter much i do suspect it's a complete packet loss.
gblx-peer.eqla01.pr.telstraglobal.net is what it's called in PingPlotter. |

confirming i sometime (very rarely tho) encounter the issue.
isp: numericable country: France
as stated before: dhcp trick proposed is absolutely not relevant (no dhcp here, still happen)
checked all my network => no issue
also, have happened several time where we were several getting "socket close" while we are in different country.
happen with me (france), 1 personne in canada, 2 in swiss, 1 in china
all getting the issue at the very same time.
we were all on ts => no probleme
2 of us were also on test server at the same time => no disconnection
network engineer here, problem source => CCP Tq server / connection
solution: CCP, fix your damn server / network
thanks |
