Last I check any accident while driving with lights and sirens is the emergency vehicle operators fault. (Law) could be only the state where I got certed, but they made that painfully clear to me when I was learning/going through the course. It might be an accident, but it was the cops fault unless the suspect through the guy in front...
Cops tried to pull something similar to my brother in law and myself on the way to his wedding of all days. Stated it was he who hit them while they were en-route, driving on the wrong side of the road and hit us head on running a red light.... NOPE sorry fellas now pay the insurance. |

When you get to hell, be a dear and save me a spot in the shade?
To get back on topic, there's been debates in the past whether high-speed chases are worth it, given the risk to the community. http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2010-04-22-police-chase-deaths_N.htm "Innocent bystanders account for one-third of those who are killed in high-speed police chases"
And the numbers might be seriously under-reported.

There was a similar incident in Liverpool some years ago where a police car hit someone and his upper body ended up smashing through the window into the police car whilst his legs ended up 150' down the road....
The police did the unfortunate gentleman for breaking and entering AND leaving the scene of an accident.

After the amount of times i've nearly been ran over by the local police i'm inclined to say No. I swear these guys only flick on the lights when they are trying to kill me. seriously no lights on at all, cruising up the road at 30 mph, the second i'm halfway across the road lights on gunning it at 60mph, just missing me then turning the lights off again, i hate those guys. |

Actually we did begin to pull over to the right... Then he turned left (once again coming head on. We then swerved left and he hit us on the passenger side (me) the length of our car. He shouldn't have been in the on coming lane though, as the flow of traffic was fine. Emergency vehicles are suppose to only go into on coming traffic around a light or if it's completely stalled. And you're still liable with lights and sirens on. |

Something like this happened in downtown San Antonio, Texas a few years back. High speed pursuit, cop car couldn't make the turn, got on the sidewalk and took out two Wisconsin tourists. I asked my San Antonio PD cop friend about it, and he said that that car wasn't even the one pursuing. Everybody heard about the chase on the radio, and they all got excited and started burning through downtown to try to catch up with the action. Pretty fricking irresponsible. Not saying all cops are irresponsible, but those guys sure were. |

Just to clarify, the article only states that the guy was homeless and been in the area for awhile. Awhile to some could be a few days to weeks or even months. Now there is also no mentioning if the guy was a veteran or if he was even attempting to look for a job. I watched my great uncle go through a similar situation for several months after his divorce. Everything was stripped from him by his ex and was actively looking for work the entire time. The family had completely abandoned him and left him out to dry. I saw him quite frequently for I ran the streets in my teen years.
My point is, you can not judge a man's character based off 2 sentences from a biased source. The evidence of absence is not the absence of evidence. Stick around. I'm full of bad ideas. ~Isaac Clarke |

About 40 years ago in my home town. A 90 year old lady was walking against a red light at a corner in front of a McDonalds. The big truck turning drove right over her and tore her apart. Her heart and lungs were lying in the road and when the driver looked at the back end double wheels he saw her head that was torn off sticking out from between the two wheels. Arms and legs spread all over. The people all eating at the outside table at McDonalds could see all the gutz...

Ah... it's all starting to make sense now. I wondered what the possible rationale for this might have been... now I understand.
Not content with hosting the Olympics this year, it looks like we're in the process of gearing up for a bid for Death Race 2013 by turning the UK into a "target rich environment" I believe the phrase is.
I'm off to place -ú5 with William Hill on the West Midlands Serious Crime Squad, who lived up to their name admirably in this years event in Rio de Janeiro placing a well earned third after the Mrs Lawson Womens' Institute Drunk Driving team who were narrowly pipped for first place by the Half A Dozen D-List Celebs Fresh Out of Rehab team led by team captain Vince Neil. I think so. Technically, the officer driving is 'at fault' for the collision, but the offender should be charged for the death (and, as I understand it, involuntary manslaughter covers any death that occurs as a result of an 'unlawful event', of which fleeing arrest is certainly an example.) |
