Hey guys,
I just returned to the game after a long hiatus, so I'm very low on skillpoints. I decided to abandon shooting straight for a big ship and start investigating getting into tech 2 levels of frigs and cruisers.
My question for you fellas is this: are tech 2 frigates actually useful for mechanics of the game? I know about interdictors and interceptors, but what about assault frigs or cov ops? Stealth bombers seem really cool as well. I know I could PvE through level 2 missions with em, but will I just have wasted skill points if I go that deep into frigs?
Finally - I need to choose a new race for my ships (I'm caldari) outside of the drake/blackbird, any recommendations or tips from veterans is much appreciated.
Fly safe.

Cov ops are of course useful in their scouting and probing role, stealth bombers are used a TON. You already mentioned interceptors, which only leaves AF's an EAF's. Sadly I don't have much over for EAF's, as while they(most of them) have roles they're typically very narrow and could've been covered by another ship instead, just or almost as well. AF's are however pretty neat and fill a decent niche.
As for what to crosstrain for, my first advice would be not to, but instead spend your time polishing support skills for the ships you currently fly and all the general ones. Caldari isn't bad in any way shape or form, and there's honestly not much roles left you need to crosstrain to cover well.
By the time you have your supportskills up you'll most likely have the experience to know what kind of race you want to crosstrain to. Parrots, commence!

Interceptors - useful. Cov Ops - useful. Stealth bombers - useful. AS - almost useless, but ppl still fly them , they are useless but fun to fly EAS - almost useless. Interdictors - useful.
Also take a look at navy and faction frigates, they were revamped. Dramiel is new FOTM of this game.
Preferable race: minmatar, amarr or gallente, depending on what ship class you are interested most of all. Just anything xept caldari.

Well, I'm stuck Caldari for awhile. I've already invested in the support and tank skills for them, so to get to a fully tech 2 drake will only take me like 9 more days.
I'm going to have to think about it.

Covops are useful for scouting and probing, and bombers are good in their little niche.
Assault frigates are only really useful for solo roaming or flying in pairs. The caldari AF's are decent and the people saying otherwise are fairly clueless. For PVE not so much, you're probably better off going down the same old route of drake to raven or tengu.

You will be happy to know then that they fixed rockets and Merlin's and variants like the tech 2 rocket assault ship puts out good DPS. Also Navy hookbills are now flown by lots of players with some nasty PvP fits out there. If you have drone skills a rocket packing worm is a pretty cool ship as well.

Fly safe.
The definition of useful really depends on what you are planning on doing with them.
Interceptors make for excellent tackle ships in all sizes of gang as well as being fun solo ships if you fly the combat variants, especially the Taranis.
Covert ops are obviously very useful for scouting and exploration and pretty much any gang would welcome one with open arms.
The stealth bombers occupy a niche role but are very very good at it.
Assault frigates have no real place in fleets but in small gangs and solo they provide an excellent balance of DPS and tank. Lots of pirates like these ships for this reason and you'll often see them getting involved in 2/10 complex fights around low sec.
The electronic attack frigates are mostly useless and you're almost always better off flying the T1 cruiser variant instead. This is especially true of the Kitsune which is easily out-classed by the far-cheaper Blackbird.
In many ways flying frigates is a bit of a way of life so if you enjoy interceptors, T1 frigates, or faction frigates then it is probably well worth investing in the class as a whole. If, instead, you find that you get more joy from the larger ships then you might as well skip over them for now. It is worth pointing out that the skills required for the T2 frigates are prerequisites for flying the equivalent T2 cruisers should you want to do that.

1) Wensley stop reading the forums and posting. It isn't a month yet
2) AFs are fun but they aren't worth taking to L5 (which I did). If you're going to take any frigate class ship to L5 then make it Interceptors as the bonuses are pretty awesome on both fleet and combat inties.
3) If you fly mainly in low-sec and are learning PvP then I'd give AFs a miss completely. Null sec you will see a LOT more of them due to no gate guns.
4) If you're only doing PVE I'd be inclined to leave them until you come to train Heavy Assault Ships - L4 Assault Ships is a pre-req.

Despite so many people saying they're crap because lack of mids and extra bonus, from what I see T2 frigs can fill great number of jobs on the field. I don't fly those my self cause I don't like those pesky little stuff.
CCP make a special carrier for ME !! - no dps bonus, just energy and remote rep bonus, self rep. -Maintenance ship hangar: can hold 35 T2 frigs, enough ammo stock for the pesky in board stuff and a bar with spirits and exotic dancers.
SP required 300M. Let me know when you'll do that one I'll pay my sub for the time required in advance.

Well my advice for a cross train would be Matar. First, their line of T2 frigs is really nice, then it is the only faction that will put your shield skills to a good use.

I dont know that I'd say the bb totally outclasses the Kitsune. Kitsune jams harder, is smaller, and is faster...but that extra 15 mil is a *****

Easy tradeoff for the increased survivability from better speed and mobility. Blackbird certainly has a place in a fleet, but the Kitsune is very good. Matter of fact, all the EAFs have some really good capability, especially since for the non-Caldari boats, you get the same type bonuses of the recons, in a smaller, cheaper, and much faster package. That being said, I'm in FW, and as long as its not some fight with pirates, we don't have to worry with gate/station guns.

Hey hey,
Thanks for all the responses, they were really, really helpful. I went on my first op last night. If no one wants to fight, those get loooooong.
After reading the advice, I'm going to train up into a decently fit Drake for mission running so I can fund my inevitable tech 2 frig/cruiser losses.
To the Minmatar guy recommending them for my shield skills....I just don't like Min ships. I know they're FOTM right now, but I just can't get behind it. I'm going to flesh out Caldari, maybe it isn't that bad....
again, thanks for being a great community.
