When I first created this character, I was thinking the same sort of thing you are. Sneaky smuggler seemed like it would be pretty cool. Unfortunately, there wasn't much smuggling to do. It isn't really that developed in EVE. The drugs thing is the one exception. The new changes to scanning for illegal contraband mean that players can scan for those items and if they are found, the scanning pilot gets kill rights. The changes coming in Incarna related to bars/clubs/boosters/drugs opens the door for some possible smuggling, depending on exactly how that works. That will make it a bit more interesting. Who knows? Maybe smuggling will actually become more of profession.
Unless that happens though, basic losec/nosec transport is pretty much it for the cloaky hauler. However jump freighters are vastly superior for the task. Still its good to see people interested in the hauling arts! Black Frog LogisticsùLosec/Nosec Jump Freighter Services (Division of Red Frog) |

There is a difference between hauling/courier work and smuggling. Smuggling is specifically referring to moving items that are illegal in at least one of the empire regions. Items that are illegal in those regions means a customs agent can scan you and take action. The new mechanics (I'm not sure if its actually live yet) will have players do the scanning and get kill rights on the smuggler. Moving stuff through losec/nosec is dangerous, but its not 'smuggling'. |

I disagree.
The concept of being a smuggler in EVE existed before drugs etc were added. Defeating player efforts to stop you is smuggling just as much as defeating npc factions is.
Smuggling Transport in dangerous areas is transport in dangerous areas. We don't refer to running ships through the Gulf of Aden as 'smuggling,' even though the area is rife with pirates. The term is specific to criminal actions, and the only criminal transport in EVE is the transport of goods illegal in at least one empire region. For EVE specifically, the concept of smuggling was tied to Black Market Trading (see Black Market subheading), a skill that specifically reduced the chance that contraband could be scanned out. [I'm not sure how accurate the information is, but one of the older EVE item database dumps includes two smuggling related items other than Black Market Trading: Smuggling and Smuggler's Mask. They may have been items that were in an original database but never made it into the game. Just an interesting find on Google. If they were really in the db, their description is a pretty good indicator that the intent of smuggling in EVE is tied to scanning out items in the hold.]
The definition you're advocating would mean that anyone, anywhere, transporting anything in their hold qualifies as a smuggler. That seems like an overly broad definition. In the context of the player scan/kill rights mechanics, the kill rights are only assigned based on the scanned presence of one of those illegal items, so even though you're 'defeating player efforts' its only because of what you're hauling, not just because you're hauling. No. It's not the definition of 'smuggling,' which I linked for you. It is the definition of 'blockade running.' The link includes a comparison of blockade running vs. smuggling. In EVE, they're definitely different, as the Black Market Trading skill and game mechanics surrounding contraband make clear.
If you want to talk about the tactics necessary to break through a gate camp, yes, jumping a gate is the same, no matter what you've got in the hold.
I don't agree with most of Shadow's responses (except for the status hit). We've built a very successful business doing all of those things on a regular basis, though we don't take a "cut of the profits," we just charge a delivery fee.

Yes, I most certainly can challenge your use of it. Note the repeated use of "legal" and "law" in those definitions. There is no law in nosec. I can't help it if you don't understand the difference in usage. Those campers are gonna kill you no matter what's in your hold. If it doesn't matter what's in your hold, then you're not smuggling. You're just another target on the gate.
Bottom line: you can call it whatever you want, but you're not smuggling as EVE game mechanics define it.
