The French, yes, but Italians? I live here and I've yet to experience this...and I've been living in Italy since 2003.
Italian men are such pansies that you'd have the opposite effect: they smell like a French w***ehouse with all the beauty products they use.
I dunno, I live in the north. Maybe it's a southern thing.

Rudest, possibly. Most obnoxious? It'd be a cross between they and we Americans.
Still, the English are the most insufferable pr!cks imo. They're more polite than the French and less obnoxious than the Americans, but their insufferable arrogance is something that even the rest of the world can agree on.

But we all come across differently. The 'judging a book by its cover' is a common social mishap. You could like someone on these forums from what they post. But if you meet them anonymously in public you could have a totally different first impression. Myself I am unrefined and socially clumsy which is at odd's with my forum smart-arse persona

No no, Americans aren't arrogant; they're just ignorant and annoying, sometimes willfully. Arrogance has an undertone of culture and class, which is something that American arrogance is without.
Ask for directions from an American in the US and they'll bend over backwards to help you find where you need to go. Ask directions from someone in London and they'll simply either ignore you or smirk and walk away. I've noticed in the north it's much, much better with the people much more open and friendly. Maybe it's a Londoner thing.
This is just perception, however.

Edited by: Vogue on 27/05/2011 19:34:51 Edited by: Vogue on 27/05/2011 19:32:16 London is a fast paced global metropolitan city. But like any big city there are different locales to suit people. In Hampstead you will see scruffy old people who are millionaires. Whereas Chelsea is popular with new money on new cloths and probably has seen a lot of new money fall to ashes during recessions. If you ask a rich fuddy duddy for directions in Hampstead you more likely will get a response than a nouveau riche type in Chelsea.
Though In general British people are guarded in public to strangers. I think this is an offshoot of us being somewhat shifty. I think this is from the UK's history of being an island nation that went out and built an empire.

And honestly, YOU'RE RIGHT! As a whole they're smarter, more cultured, more awake, and better educated than the rest of us Americans, which is why I pardon their snootiness...generalizing, of course. Their business sense parallels our own and there's a reason why London is the OTHER center of the world next to NYC.
If I didn't own a house in Italy, I'd move to the UK in a heartbeat because the thought of moving back to the US just saddens me. I wish it weren't so, but it is.
The English are so infuriating because although they may p!ss you off, deep down you admire them for it. What's more, they don't hold grudges...not really. They may never let you live something down but it's never crass and obnoxious like we can be.

The best thing about being English is our rich and interesting history that spans over many centuries. A monarchy whose acheivements and failings have been documented for a thousand years. The quirks and customs brought to us by the many visitor to our land; Romans, Saxons, Angles, Jutes, Vikings, Normans etc.
As an avid history fan, if I were American it would infuriate me knowing that until about 500 years ago, there was nothing. Apart from wigwams, teepees and feathery hats. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That's because you are unable to tell where something stops being humorous and starts being rude and passive aggressive. Monty Python is over.
The fact is your sense of humor is dead. You don't have a true sense of humor because what you consider humorous these days, other people would consider arrogant and rude. We're not talking about Little Britain, The Office, or The IT Crowd; we're talking about how the English interact with other people...you insult them in what you consider a joking way. Then, just like you said, you think "the rest of the world has failed to adapt to your sense of humor". What you don't realize is that it is YOU who have failed to adapt to the rest of the world.
A little light joking or prodding never hurt anyone, but that's not what this is about. You often cross the line by having fun at others' expense, but in a crass way as of late. .
I find offense at this remark sir.
I honestly and thoroughly enjoy british humor. So much in fact that the way they behave and their small talk is to me an endless source of sheer amusement. I find for that matter French humor a bit misguided and American humor kinda simple and childish.
Monty Python might be over for you Sir, not for others.
Also I'm Latinamerican, humor here can be quite rude, aggressive at other's expenses and downright insulting if not plain homophobic/sexual orientation geared and for some reason dealing with all kinds of sexuality or weird innuendos and human body orifices. Common jokes in here involve phrases that no matter the context will always involve sexual intercourse when spoken out loud or the famous rebuttals when you counter a joke made on your expense with an even more demeaning counter joke involving sexuality or lack of it. See, first rule of thumb I learned when dealing with gringos for example Is I can't simply treat them the way I treat my friends with open greetings of what they will consider insults and is simply a form of jokingly implying that if you can say such insults to someone it means you a friend. That's culture for you, Western Venezuela one anyway, Panamanians here are a bit touchy too (har har) and their humor tends to ridicule others as they criticize them to death, whereas common bonds in joking are established by criticizing the same things.
Where I come from it's pretty usual to not understand if two very close friends meet in the street if they are about to draw guns and fists and kill each other or simply acknowledging by the ammount of insults they truly friends. When written like that sounds odd, but in action is more natural.
On the other side you can see, the British humor is so overtly different to what Im used to hear regarding which orifice you enjoy poking at, that Brit humor is practically the same with a musical overtone. I'm not saying I don't enjoy the crass latinamerican sexual innuendo humor I'm used to, but I truly enjoy it when it's being used in a "polite" setting. It's hysterical!!!
Now, German humor, hmmm, never heard any of their jokes tho.
The fact you dislike the brits and their humor is just an obvious bias of you regarding what you find in them not tolerable, which seems to be making jokes at other's expense. That's a core of our humor too, simply more crass and demeaning.

You completely missed the point and didn't read my post. I grew up on Monty Python. What I'm saying is that era of British humor is over, the high-brow sort of thing prevalent in the people. It's a little baser these days, that's all.

I have travelled to many a place in the world and here is what I found.
1. That no matter where you go you will always find rude people
2. also as with above you will always find more polite people
As an Englishman, I find it very hard to believe those that call us rude, hard to believe they have genuinely been to the UK.
Trouble is, go to almost any big city, in any country and most of the time you will not get the same politeness you would get say in a smaller town, or village, or tourist spot.
Every race on this Earth has their faults, but there are not widespread. Many would say the Americans are ignorant to the outside world, and complete idiots who know nothing but that God Bless America Routine, BUT I have to say that while that is what it often seems like, it could not be more further from the truth for a lot of Americans.
Someone already said it, but I will say it again, Do not judge a book by its cover

I have been many places, from USA and South America, from England to India, and I can honestly say in my experience, no one culture is any more or less rude than the next.
Smile, be patient, don't be rude your self, and we find that people are the same every where, the differences are superficial. There are of course whack jobs, but they're all over the place too.

Indeed. I would have to say in many parts of London, people are extremely rude. I've taken my wife there a couple of times and she dislikes it for that very reason. Much of it could be down to the fast paced, cosmopolitan life of the place I guess.

'Race' is often used as a byword for culture these days. It's pretty important to make this distinction before pointing fingers and mentioning racial superiority. Judging by the tone of the post you refer to I would hazard a guess there is no implied malice.

Listen to how the English interact with each other and other people...especially others. Of course, if you're English you won't get it, so by providing you "proof" that your sense of humor is often degrading and at the expense of other people (whether overtly or passive aggressively) wouldn't change anything.
That doesn't mean it's not hilarious and I never said it wasn't funny, but it's no longer a "sense of humor"; rather, malice and passive aggressiveness wrapped up in humor form.
I think Ricky Gervais is absolutely brilliant and every time he opens his mouth he makes my sides hurt from laughing so hard, but it's because he's rather malicious and very passive aggressive. I never said it wasn't funny, only that it's rather mean and not really what people would call classic Brit humor such as Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, Are You Being Served? Red Dwarf, etc. where the humor was often between the lines and much more high brow.
