To all the people *****ing because they run a mac:
Blame yourself for paying 50% more on hardware than the rest of us do. If you built your own PC(pretty easy to do, and lots of nerds around to help you), you could have had a *****ing machine that runs eve very well on the cheap. I only spent $350 total on my rig and I can run 4-5 eve clients at a time with little degradation to performance.
Suck it up that you got brainwashed by Apple into thinking a mac was superior in any way. Sell it on ebay while there are still gullible people to buy it for top dollar, pocket 1/2 of the cash, spend the other half on a faster system to play this glorious game we have here.

I'm going to be up all night if I can't find someone with better interwebz to help me dl it. EVE doesn't require fast internet, CCP does. :))
Ever think CCP is deploying this NOW instead of with Incarna making that patch day easier on everyone? I think its a great idea to spread it out instead of making it a 2gb patch that people on dialup would cry about :D

Originally by: Josefine Etrange Time is money, and not having to use cheap asus crap which burns out after 2 and a half year is a huge plus on the time side if you are not planing anyway to update your system every 2 years ;-)
Asus manufactures Apple hardware for them...as does many other motherboard manufacturers that make their own that you can build your own systems with, from the same factories, using the same chips, using the same labor force..etc...

Yeap $350 bucks for a system that gets a windows experience rating of 7.3 across the board(except HDD of 5.9, but thats normal)
AMD Athlon II X4 645 Propus 3.1GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor ADX645WFGMBOX ASRock M3A770DE AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard ADATA XPG Gaming Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model AX3U1600GB2G9-2G RAIDMAX HYBRID 2 RX-530SS 530W ATX12V V2.2/ EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Modular LED Power Supply Western Digital Caviar Blue WD3200AAJS 320GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive Nvidia GTX280 Video Card, bought off a coworker haggled down from $100 to $75 :D
Slapped that all in an old piece of crap case I gutted that would fit the GTX280 beast, threw in a DVD burner I had kicking around, and the old 17" and 20" LCD's I use work just great :) Only running two monitors at the moment, so i have to tab between some clients, hopefully throw in a $40-$50 video card at some point to add two more screens :)
And yes I can run 5 clients, all undocked and the processor is still running happy as a clam at about 40-50% usage, now yeah they would die in a fire in any good sized fleet engagement, but meh its 6x faster processing wise than what I was running before.
Now the Truth about Apple:
Apple is making you pay out the ass for a hard drive now for new imac's: http://www.macrumors.com/2011/05/12/apple-restricts-hard-drive-replacements-on-new-imacs/ So you can't upgrade the hard drive anymore unless you buy some mac specific hard drive built by western digital, hurray for proprietary!
And here is an example of what they charge for hard drives: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB984ZM/B?n=internal&fnode=MTY1NDA0Nw&mco=MTA4ODc1MTk&s=topSellers $299 for a 1TB HDD...really...c'mon man...thats just ridiculous...
Those fancy shmancy workstation graphics cards you talked about earlier(fireGL/quatroFX cards) SUCK for gaming, but damn skippy do they render those cad drawings fast.
Point is, Apple, releases hardware built by the SAME companies that build all the PC hardware, that is yeah top notch when released, expensive as hell, and shiney, and has the same faults as the rest of the computing market. You are not going to tell me Apple branded computers will have less problems than any other PC manufacturer because man Apple has had plenty, i.e. batteries that explode, bulge out, burn stuff. Thermal paste mishaps causing entire generations of laptops to overheat. GPU flaws causing entirelines of motherboards to be replaced...all just like any PC component manufacturer.
Apple discontinued their XRAID systems a few years back, so no more storage solutions for mac servers, BUT OH WAIT, Apple discontinued their Xserve servers all together, and will soon be stopping all updates/etc for OSX Server after 10.7 I believe? That just put all that shiney expensive mac server hardware in the discontinued catagory here soon for businesses who have to follow proper information security guidelines. OS no longer supported? Gotta get rid of that server.
I personally live in a world of both Mac's and PC's, servers and workstations, laptops and desktops. The influx of mac's since switching to intel based hardware is pushed by greedy apple dealers with higher profit margins(yes I know this for a fact because I've spoken with sales managers that have told me this is the case). Had several people I support fall for it, couple years later they are buying new PC's instead because they realized "the shiney" isn't worth it.
TL;DR: Apple Sucks.

You're running Windows on it? Then Eve should run, as it's designed for home PCs such as yours.
You have it easy, of course. I install my clients to a read-only NFS partition on a Sun E450 with fully populated system boards running Solaris. The partition is a RAID5 with four independent SCSI controllers (and quite a lot of disks). I have to logon as a pivileged user to set write permissions before I can update EVE, then reset everything read-only again. After the base client system is installed I can then link all my character clients (using a special script). Every client and all ALTs thus have their own unique installations linked to the base install, with dedicated cache and configs for each client. On major releases my installation script needs to be rewritten to take account of any new binaries that will need to be linked.
For the front-end I have a games machine like yours, only with better graphics capabilities (which EVE won't be using anyhow) and the OS on an SSD drive.
Cost wise, I probably paid about 20% of what you paid, and get 200% the performance. The difference will be accounted for by all the hours of effort I put in to the underlying system design, instead of expecting to be able to just go and buy something that would magically be configured to perform the way I wanted it to.

Solaris != Linux
Feel the same yes from a console point of view, but do not get the two confused.
