You know, Dust 514 Beta invites should be a loyalty reward for current EVE Players.
Like why should any Joe-Shmo console gamer be invited invited to the Beta before any us, right. Especially since nubs to our universe would have no idea how to provide the insightful feedback that comes from being an experienced lover of EVE Online.

What kind of feedback? You mean spamming FUUUUUUUUUUWTFRAGEEEEE threads over and over again through the forum instead of submitting petition or bug report? For sure EVE community is quite experienced in this

I'd say sure, why not? except I don't trust the lot of you to Beta test without attempting to tailor it to suit your own interests. As far as I'm concerned CCP should only test in house, and nobody should get to play till it's a public released.
As far as I'm concerned Beta testers make every effort to guide game mechanics, loot generation, rewards, and the lot for personal advantage later. RMT's do it so they can make money of it later, rationalizing that they earned it, others do it so they can benefit from knowing where all the best returns and how to get them so they can quickly rank up amongst their peers and be legends, and still others do it for other reasons.
Either way, they're more interested in how they can make the game pay them, than in how they can help the Dev's produce a quality game that many people will like and enjoy. If this seems unlikely to you, then you should just have a look at all the games that had RMT's selling in game items and currency before the game had aged more than 2 months. I can think of plenty of examples where I started playing an MMO shortly after release, and found RMT's selling stuff already.
Best reason I can think of not to do it. I hate listening to arrogant players who've "been playing since beta' anyway. I've beta tested more than a few games, and never once bragged about it, or used it to show my obvious superiority to all the "Noobs".
Beta testing should be scrapped in all games. In house testing by paid employees only.

I would like to add that the worst people to beta test a game or indeed any software are those involved in it's design and development of it. It's the public beta tester's that find a majority of the bugs and generally find issues that were totally overlooked during development.
Years ago I was a developer on a very large processing system and we had what we called _OS**T errors (fill in the ** yourselves), they literally printed _OS**T and a text string indicating where it came from. These were basically errors that shouldn't ever come up because supposedly all possible outcomes where catered for but it's quite surprising how many times they did appear once the system went out for beta testing.

It's too early to tell about the beta details or the sign-up process, but we'll definitely want the EVE players to take part.

Or a special EVE paintjob on a PS3.

Imagine how bad a console player would be against a person with a keyboard and mouse: it would be totally weighted towards the PC player (its just the facts, mouse and keyboard is more responsive and ergonomic for commands).
Also I think CCP want people to be on EVE on the PC and DUST players on the console, so that there is the option to play both simultaneously and stops people having to convert to DUST and ultimately less EVE players. As well as CCP saying that they want to target a different audience and gt the console players into the EVE universe.
But don't worry guys; I play Xbox and PS3 online FPSs and I know that general console players aren't up to the tactics and strategy that are essential for FPSs (such as those used in Counterstrike and Quake)
P.S. Ive played EVE for a little while now and used to have an old account years ago (alas I lost the details for it), but this is my first post on here. Sorry if I breached any board etiquette.

Not to sound ungrateful. . . buuuuuuuuuut...
Wasn't the entire purpose of putting it on the PS3 so you did not cannibalize your playerbase?
Why would you now want current eve players to get in on it?

The simplest way to structre something like this would be to allow Dust accounts to be created but not activated for free, and for us to be able to send them AUR with our "main" in EVE. Once we've sent a PLEX worth for AUR (or whatever CCP deem to be the minimum required "cover charge"), then the Dust account activates.
At their option, CCP might even choose to let EVE players activate accounts at a discounted rate. Since we've already paid for Dust's development already, that would be a nice gesture.
This would atually be a genuinely useful implementation of AUR and a nice gesture towards the EVE community.
Malcanis' Law: Whenever a mechanics change is proposed on behalf of "new players", that change is always to the overwhelming advantage of richer, older players. |
