"The lady doth proesteth too much" or something similar goes the quote.
I have read on here seemingly countless threads from Americans whining about the Russian bots ruining the game.
Yet, when it's getting to Prime Time US Spoiled Brat Kiddy Time I may as well pack up my mining ship and wait for the downtime to reset the ores in the belts.
Yes, the Russians, the Chinese and everyone else who has appeared as a Bogey Man on the 'It's Hollywood So It Must Be True' Rambo/Chuck Norris (repeat ad nauseum) films may have their bots but, By Jove!, not as many as the bloody Yanks.

CCP should just make it so you have to punch in a captcha every half hour - hour you are playing while not saying anything, or following some other necessary action for when you are actually playing. Not that hard to implement something as simple as a pop up window. And I doubt anyone would notice this as being annoying for god sake, the journal never stops ****ing blinking.

It is a logical fallacy, then, to hail CAPTCHA as a spam-busting panacea. Even 10% accuracy by a computer amounts to system failure, just at a slower rate. It is also faulty logic to believe that the adoption of CAPTCHA in large sites is evidence of its supremacy in fighting spam. Indeed, a number of techniques are as effective as CAPTCHA, without causing the human interaction step that causes usability and accessibility issues.

Hmm, so I am there sipping a latte and reading the latest journal from the Welsh Sunburn Studies whilst, with half an eye, watching my mining tug ripping an asteroid to bits when a fleet of pirates hove to on the starboard bow. I reach over for the missile and drone launchers but...
The Captcha dialog appears.
The Myfanfy failing eyesight misreads the Capcha. The shields go down. Another attmpt is made. Is that a D or a zero or even a B? Who can tell? The Armour vanishes in a plume of smoke. Last chance; that is either a Q or an O. Who call tell from the inside of the pod.
I can't warp out as I can't differntiate between a T, a J and a 7.
No matter. Penty of time to sort this out when getting the Medical Clone refitted with new implants.

NO system is perfect, but something resembling CAPTCHA would slow things down a bit for the botters. Especially if adjusted every downtime to make it more difficult for OCR to read.
For those saying it can be bypassed: some clever coding can be used to prevent your mining guns and strippers from firing unless you enter the correct time-stamped "license code" for the time you are mining.
It can be done, and the botters can be slowed down if not stopped.
It's just a matter of getting it done.

Its mornings like this I feel I have truly accomplished something. For all the ideas one person can have surely those of originality are few and far between. Either way something needs to be done. And CCP is seemingly taking the hard route to do it.
IP's, credit card info, big brother surveillance, and what ever is necessary. The first time I tried this game out was in 06. A bountiful future of opportunity and fortune laid before me in the many belts. Now the economy is being run more and more by the biggest players imaginable. And appropriately fueled in part by the equivalent of sweat shops.

Easy captcha will be recognized with no problems with basic OCR. Hard captcha will just make you look stupid. Did you ever tried to enter captcha generated with heavy noise, multiple special symbols and unicode characters with umlaut and some wave distortion for dessert? Did you ever reloaded captcha about twenty times in row just to find image that not cause your eyes bleeding? When I see such captcha on site I'm just leaving because site owners are not professional and not respecting visitors.
ps: there is bot reporting button implemented already. Stop the whine ffs

As glad as I am this topic didn't die. I feel like more and more it's simply being flooded by mission / pvpers. The point is that CCP Should dc on the hour every hour for three days every Chinese / Russian ip address and see the difference in the number of bots. And yes the AUSies are exclusive to this because like previously posted. Vegemite and koala's are impervious to dc's.

About the only way I see to limit bots would be make it something where validation comes from something not on the PC.
While really to extreme, but who knows, maybe in the future you will purchase the mining skills for a plex. This will get you sent a Digipass of some sort. Then when you wish to mine, you can use it to unlock 30 minutes of mining. After such time expires, you are unable to mine until you re-validate.
Pain in the ass, to costly to implement, but all those wanting some system would have to consider how inconvenient such a system would have to be in order to be effective.

What if CCP simply removes the minerals on the market that are mined whenever they discover a bot? If they were used in anything, that product is removed and isk sent back. The only time this process wouldn't be put in effect is if it was already made into an asset being used by a player. Or if it caused to much inconvenience to be removed. But by at least removing the bot + any minerals still on the market or in some form of storage. Then people will become more picky about where they get their minerals and it will at least semi balance the economy?

Even then it should be removed. It was acquired using illegal means. ISK is fairly much liquid assets. If it can be removed because of RMT, etc, so should any other form of illegally gained assets.

Edited by: Abdiel Kavash on 09/06/2011 09:55:18 Let's say a bot mines 100,000 Tritanium and places it on the market. A manufacturer buys 50,000 of the Tritanium and pools it together with 150,000 he already had. Then he uses the 200,000 trit to build four ships, which he then sells. Four people buy the ships: One gets it blown up in PvP and someone else salvages the wreck. The second runs missions with the ship and accumulates a stack of bounties and LPs. The third fits the ship with faction guns and moves to a wormhole. The fourth buys the ship and re-sells it for profit.
None of the above players knew that the minerals were acquired "illegaly", all transactions happened on the open market.
Now the bot is discovered. What exactly should be removed? All of the ships? One of the ships? Which one? The salvage from the first wreck? The mission rewards the second player got? What should happen to the faction mods of the third, and what to the wallet balance of the fourth? ---

I did state that removal would be ignored if at to great an inconvenience. I'm simply saying that all the original ISK, ore, minerals, and guilty parties should be punished and have it removed outright. Of course once something cycles into the system its almost impossible to remove.
