My buddy, who's a system administrator, plays quite a lot while "on duty". I wish I could too, but can't, too much work to do, so I usually just troll and post random crap here.

I work at home so I can play EvE for 16 hours a day if I want, as long as it's something menial like i.e. mining, PI or industry.
Sadly CCP interpreted this as botting and so they banned me
So now I only play 2-3 hours a day but it really breaks the feeling of sandbox and once I have done my stuff all I have is to read the forums and be hugely bored.
Therefore if you are a guy who plays a lot at work doing similar menial tasks, beware!

I play EVE at work... hell I even managed to get an uprated spec due to the development work I do which means I can actually do more of my job and still play EVE with a good frame rate
However I don'tp lay 6 hours a day
I do spend a degree of time twiddling my thumbs whilst I wait for thing to replicate in Config Manager (anyone who uses this will understand!) or when packaging up a virtual app.
Also a lot of my work involves scripting, which once fired off leaves me again twiddling my thumbs whilst I await its completion.
Plus, a lot of the time I am autopiloting on my alt hauling goods... if I ever do a mission on my main then it'll be in a passive tanked Ishtar (so it can be done pretty much afk).
Whilst I know it is wrong to do this at work, if I didn't play EVE, I'd probably go mad given the level of stress I have to endure. It's a very effective distraction when I need it to be and allows me to regain my focus for the given job at hand.
However in my defense, I tend to get to work and sit at my desk for around 10 hours. Sometimes I'll stop for lunch, rarer still I'll leave the office for lunch. So in my situation, it's swings and roundabouts to be honest.
In terms of bandwith, I don't know mate. If you've not had Networks beating down your door yet, then it's safe to assume you're not tripping any network alarms. One way of measuring would be to do at home what you would do at work and see how much traffic has gone through your PC.
I suppose it's a case of who watches the watchers?
Originally by: Hermonie Watson Granger I play at work. If the phones aren't ringing, the boss doesn't care what we do. We watch movies, play games, browse the web. I love my job.
This pretty much sums my situation up. My boss knows how hard I work and is probably turning a blind eye. I am not overt with it and I never say "oh no, I cannot do that because I am busy (playing EVE)". Discretion and a flexible employer are the key thing here.

Surprisingly I don't play EVE while I work. I used to back when I worked at a hotel but that job had a lot of downtime between 1am and 6am

Had a friend who got caught playing Eve at work and convinced his manager that that it was a front end for a database compression algorithm and had to be run for at LEAST 4 hours a day.
I ROFLed over that one

When I have a lot of time waiting on code I'm debugging/testing to run I will ice mine on my indy alt, lately I'm doing a lot of actual coding and less waiting so I haven't done much...
I used to remote to my home and just mine most of the day, but my current home has resident gank squads, so I prefer to be able to watch my overview and not worry about latency with VNC. - [SERVICE] Corp Standings For POS anchoring |

This is how my IT shoppe is run.
People are hired to do a job. As long as that job gets done properly, I couldn't care less what they do on their slack time, provided it isn't against the law or disruptive to my network.
People who took advantage have been sacked. This lets the rest know we are serious. No user complaints equals happy management. Happy management equals workers free to play during idle times.
Workers free to play during idle times equals happy employees who, when the call comes, put forth the extra effort.
Everyone wins.
:)
Exactly!! Thankyou!!!
I also play eve at work. I work for Government and do Shiftwork. I only play eve on the weekends when working dayshift - and every single nightshift that im on :P
Our manager's know we bring in laptops and the such to play games - they also dont care.
Why?
They take comfort in the fact that knowing we're up playing games means that we are awake - and not sleeping :P
Since my job is to monitor MVS consoles and if something breaks start waking people up to fix it - There's realy only so much work that can be done...... and since they're 12 hour shifts..............................
Its incredibly easy to sit there playing even and it only takes two seconds to turn my head to the side to look at the pretty 52" LCD tv up on the wall to check theres nothing that requires attention. (You will be sad - the whole black/green dos background thing is allready burning into the TV. Minamise the consoles to see the desktop background and you can clearly see where each console was sitting as the area is shaded in black :P)
I used to work in a corporate enviroment doing shift work. I'll never be working for a corpoation again. I have my cushy government job and im never going back.
Perhaps if Corporations treated its employee's as actual human beings - rather than slave laborer's they'er not allowed to physically punish for not living, breathing, and sweating the work they're hired to do (My old company UNISYS - would use scare tatics - keep EVERYONE in a "sub-performance" range by setting up their efficiecny monitoring software wrongly so noone - even if they were a machine and sat there for the entire 8 hours powering thru as much as they could - which i used to do untill i got sick of the abuse and fearmongering - would reach the "your'e NOT performing as we hired you to" level - This in effect let them fire anyone at whim under the guise of they're not performing to what they were hired to do. Numerous people spent months collecting data to present it to the managers to show them how their time monitoring software was incorrectly setup so noone could reach what was required - They lost their jobs)
So to all you Corporate asshats out there. Neener neener - i hope you go bankrupt and you're employee's steal office supplies and furnature.

That's a story I keep hearing, and my current employer is keen to set up metrics along with "Personal Professional Development Plans". They're not interested in helping my professional development, they just want to monitor my professional development. If I don't "develop" according to the "plan", no bonus for me. Thankfully the bonuses are a very small proportion of my yearly income.
I don't play EVE at work - I'm a programmer so my job is staring at the screen. The last thing I want is a down-time distraction that keeps me staring at the screen :)
So I have a camera and head outside to try finding something new to photograph.

The global economy is going to **** because people are greedy - and are willing to screw over fellow human beings in the name of profit.
As an Australian, i find it quite interesting that when i go to the shops (7-11) to buy a Coca Cola, it costs me 99c.
However, when i went to the USA - to one of you're 7-11's. A single can of coke costed me $2.99.
There is no reason for that - other than the people selling you the products are greedy $#@$ intent on screwing every cent out of you possible.
The same reasons that traditional medacines and remadies are being forced out of the market/made illigeal by the FDA - to make the pharma companies products the only option.
And if you dont think the phama companies are intent on curing people - rather than setting them up on a lifetime script of pills that only treat the symptoms....
Boy you need to wake up - because you're dreaming.

I play games a lot at work using my cell phone as a modem. Get a semi-crappy ping going that way, but it lets me do most things. Plus it keeps any traffic off the company network. :)

I gotta admire the concept! And I am part impressed part chocked by the replies.
If you can do your job and have time on your hands, why is it OK (or socially acceptable) to go have a coffe or read a bokk or magazine, but all hell breaks loose if you play a game or end up on the wrong webpage?
If you really wanna fleeze someone you should seek out and nail guys that does what a guy I know of does.
He runs his own IT company selling consultancy service. He takes an assignment, decided how much he wants to charge, does the job in a jiffie, then plays Eve to pass the time until all billable hours have passed!
On the other hand? Is that wrong? His customers agreed to price?
In my book - as long as you do the job you are hired to do, managers or customers should really not concern themselves with how you spend every minute.
I know plenty of consultants that drive up their bills by running completly unnecessary status meetings, but because they do that and not play a game - they are seen as professional.
Go for it Serious!

I've just got one of those jobs where 95% of my day relies on things going wrong. Fortunately for me, that doesn't happen all that often so once my routine crap is done I got the rest of the night to fill time. I can sit quietly at my desk and count ceiling tiles or I can play games, read forums, watch movies, whatever.
Of course, I'd be fired if they knew that ... But what can you do?
