This is the situation I find myself in. Now I know I'm a new character with just over 4m skill points but I'm really struggling with the level 4's at the minute. So much so that I've gone back to level 3's because I cant afford to stand the loses.
Is there a roughly defined point of minimum requirements for level 4's? I'm using an Amarr Char with an Abaddon at the moment.

Aim to tank around 600 dps and deal 250+ dps, then you should be good for L4's

They are completable with low SP BS but takes long and need you to be careful about drawing agro..also you need a good fit within the limits of your skills

It's an excellent resource, read up, prepare, good luck ;) And you should never ever lose a ship short of extraordinary conditions in lvl 4s, if you do you must find what you are doing wrong.

Well done. A round of applause to you. Why do so many people on here just want to insult or compare their epeen? Its a forum. I wasn't whining, just looking for pointers. Everyone was new once you know.
Thanks to those who contributed with useful comments. They main times I come unstuck is if I get warp scrambled and cant get the ship scrambling me in time before I get popped. Combined with a level of mission naiveness about which groups trigger aggro etc.
Im also still working out which weapons work best for me, Modulated Mega Pulse or Mega Beams.

When I was a low SP player in the same situation, I started running Level 4s with a friend. If you have a pair of low SP players in Drakes or Battleships, you can complete them quite easily. And you'll both make more ISK than running Level 3s solo. Once you both get better skills, run Level 4s solo. --- This doesn't even seem to be a regular case of rats fleeing the sinking ship. Seems more like the rats are on fire, the ship is on fire, and the sea is full of drunk Russians. - Jacob Etienne |

You can run lvl 4's in a BC but it's tough. I have run some in a drake when I first moved out of lvl 3's but the time it took to finish a lvl 4 caused me to go back to the 3's for a while. After a week or so I'd saved up enough to get a Raven and lvl 4's became much easier. As one person already posted, use eve survival to gauge what missions you can or can't do. Then it's a matter of saving enough to equip your BS with faction mods or saving for a faction BS.

Yeah, Im thinking I may have to stick to 3's for the time being as the ISK/hour rate is much more for me right now. Its just that I've done all the 3's several times over now.

The Abaddon is a fairly high-SP ship to fly well. A good forgiving low-SP ship is the Apoc.
Min/Maxers give lots of hate to beams but theyÆre a decent middle ground between pulses and tachs with lower SP, plus theyÆre cheaper since they arenÆt as popular. If you donÆt have t2 drones yet t2 lights make a world of difference in getting rid of those scramming frigs quick if you werenÆt able to snipe them.
Also as a side note the race of your character basically means nothing except for their picture.
Originally by: Constantine Saberinni Its just that I've done all the 3's several times over now.
There really arenÆt very many regular missions so youÆll get used to doing the same few over and over no matter the level.

You are doing exactly what is hardest.. L4 mission in a ship with weapons your ill prepared to use skill wise.
I have 9 million skill points just in gunnery ( I cant use large hybrids or laser..) just projectiles and I cant hit orbiting frigs worth a damn unless I web em.. Light drones and missiles are your friend for those things.
As too your question.. When your able to use T2 items for each slot, field 4 drones with 30% more damage, and you have trained BS to level 4 ... Then you will find most L4's to be very straight forward provided you FIT the right resists for the mission.
You dont need to use T2 items but if your trained enough for them, your going to get the the best performance.
Dumping ISK into faction mods is pretty good payback as long as you never shoot at a ninja and dont let your BS become worth more than 500mil
As previous poster said, train for tank then work on DPS

I would highly recommend skilling up to use T2 light combat drones - all ½race+ Drone Specialisation skills up to level 3. This will help you sort out those pesky tackle frigates while you use your main weapons on BSes. -- [Aussie players: join ANZAC channel] |

I agree that lvl 3s are a tad too easy. Its a big jump from lvl 3s to lvl 4s. Much bigger than 1 to 2 or 2 to 3.

The rule of thumb I heard when I started level 4s was this: combine your damage output and your tank in dps, and aim for a total of 1000 or more. 600 dps output plus 400 dps tank, 700+300, 500+500, whatever. That's your target. At the start you'll need more tank, but as you learn the missions and your skills get better you'll be able to reduce the amount of tank needed and increase the gank output.
What I'd say to aim for if you're using a battleship for level 4s is all skills at 4-5 needed to fly the ship and use the modules. You'll still need to be careful, and I'd agree that Tech 2 light drones are a must. ______________________________________________________ PVP is a question that has no one right answer but a lot of wrong ones. - Aelana Anais

What have you put your SP into? At 3 million SP I was running 4s solo, and now at 5 million SP they are just LOL. The main point is when I started the game I picked a ship and aimed for it. So everything I have trained (outside a couple small skills) has been to flying a Domi. T2 tank is highly recommended as it will allow you to stay alive when you are scrammed.

Edited by: Xanarae on 12/06/2011 08:43:45 Well, using an abaddon for missions while you havnt got level 5 in every related skill isnt exactly what you want to do, the Abaddon is a very skill intensive ship, try with the armageddon instead :)

There are two things that determine how effective you are in missions, when you break it down.
Isk and skill points. You either wait out the skill points to improve, or you pay for deadspace and faction mods and you turn into an instant badass. At least until you get suicide ganked for your 3.5 billion isk ship.

Thanks for the reply's they're very useful. I've trained to T2 drones and they do make a big difference. I'm just working on getting their level up to a point now where they do significant damage.
I chose the Abaddon over the other BS due to its ability to tank more damage. I have just under 2m points in gunnery and that's where I've focused most of my training closely followed by the skills to reduce cap need & drain.

To the Op, while the Abaddon might seem like the best ship for a newish player (as you pointed out you like its resist bonuses) it is actually the most difficult SP wise to use. A quick look at its bonuses show you why; look at the other Amarr BS's, they all get a Laser Cap usage bonus (Hint: that laser cap usage bonus is VITAL for a lower SP Amarr player to use lasers effectively). Lasers are VERY cap hungry, their cap hunger will seriously eat into your ability to run active hardeners/reppers. To pilot the Abaddon effectively you will need all cap related skills at V, and TBH Amarr BS at V to really get the benifits of its bonuses. As others have said, use a Geddon and FGS get T2 light Drones for the scramming frigs. Remember EVE's weapons classes are stratified as to what they can hit, the bigger the gun does not mean its uber at everything. In EVE its allways Rock - Paper - Scisors (excepting Super Carriers OFC, obligitory SC rant).

Yeah, I'll go back to an Apoc if/when I lose the Abaddon. In the interim I'll have to work with what I've got. I already have T2 drones.
I think I need to work on getting to T2 guns and hardeners now.

I would seriously recommend that you keep running L3s while skilling up at flying battlecruisers. Running L3s quickly is more profitable than running L4s slowly anyhow, and flying smaller ships is more fun (I actually run my L3s in a faction cruiser). Once you start to reach the limits where you are completing L3s so quickly that you can't really get any faster... well, then look into moving up to L4s.

I would first you realy want 5 tech 2 light scout drones for handling the scrable frigs. Second I would upgrade to a Apoc. Not becouse abandon can not get the job done but becouse it just works so much better with pulse lazers for missions with low sp's. Is it a rock? Point a Lazer at it and profit. Is it a ship? Point a Lazer at it and profit. I dont realy see any differnces here. |

Take your time bud. enjoy it. People are always in such a big rush to do lvl 4's and alot of new guys loose ships needlessly. Work on your skills, supports aswell. Get a good solid foundation then try running them with a more experienced player. But if you do want to push, like others have said, always check your intel! Plus dont try to push it to the edge, you can easily see if the incoming dps is to much for youre tank to handle, just plan ahead and bolt :) I miss the days of lower lvl missions, running them with mates, cruising around your first ever cruiser, or battlecruiser thinking your really starting to progress lol.
enjoy

Haven't died in a level 4 yet, even when I didn't have T2 guns and T2 mods on my BS....
Honestly, if you're finding level 4's that hard, then you're doing it wrong... WAY wrong...

I am in a similar spot to the OP at the moment, with 13 million odd SP though but I have been training up lots of career paths in parrallel (get bored easily).
I have found that all level 3s can be done with my Ferox relatively easy but I can't get the DPS to crack a BS on lvl4s when 11+ BS are raping me. Kiting works if I can manoeuvre but this isn't always so.
I would take the advice of finding a group of mates and having a bash at them in a small fleet. Is more fun then soloing when your in BC or lower ships and gives you the fleet skills you need for when you realise how boring the missions get after the 20th time of completing them.
Also one of the reasons I have 12 million SP is my salvage skills, I find that an average lvl3 mission will have double the ISK value if you salvage it. A Catalyst with 4 salvagers + 4 tractors is a cheap quick way of doing this.
Good luck mate :)
