Hey all you New EVE Players. I just wanted to clue you in as to how you can guarantee that you remain on the fringes of any online organization.
Now some folks do just want to have fun poking around on their own. That's fine with us if this is the case. Just remember that you have an open invitation to the revels and a seat near the hearth any time you want it.
But if you want to be in the thick of what is happening in this or any online organization, you gotta do the same thing you have to do at any party. You have to TALK to the other people. You have to get into the corp voice chat server. Voice to voice is the heart of the operation. Getting into the voice server makes it easier to do every single thing you want to do in the game. The voice server is where almost all of the educating, wheeling and dealing, Secret Evil Planning, and bonding takes place. That's just how it works. Fairness has nothing to do with it. Or to put it another way, who would you rather play with--somebody who is talking in the room with you "face to face" or somebody who only exchanges written messages with you through a slot in a door? (They'd have to be a DAMN good writer to keep me interested for long.)
Voice communication is essental to entering the leadership, to ops of any kind, to doing anything in 0.0 space. The only way I accept voiceless people in ops is with the understanding that nobody is responsible for what happens to you if you miss out on critical instructions at crisis moments such as if a mining op is attacked. A lot of the time typing is simply not an option.
It really doesn't matter why you don't participate in voice communication. All the other players can judge with any certainly is that, with millions of ISK and our character's lives at stake, you are someone who does not have this essential tool. If your finances are so bad that you don't have $15.00 for a headset, you need to stop reading this and find a job. If you are having tech troubles and are unable to figure them out I got some bad news for you: learning EVE is at least as complicated as that. If you can't figure out how to make a microphone work, you probably won't ever be very good at this game. Perhaps something simpler like tic tac toe? Solitaire? Finally, if you need further explanation on this point that does not bode well for your ability to function as a part of a team. Incomprehensible accents. Grating voices. Inane smalltalk. Wildly different volumes, from "need to turn up headphone at max to barely hear" to "yank headphones out because your eardrums just exploded". Voice-activated transmit with a noisy background. Key-activated transmit with people forgetting to push the key. No record or what was said, people missing what's said, having to repeat it a zillion times and for each newcomer.
Voice channels ? No thanks. I'd rather use text mode mainly. _

The general image I form of people with my own imagination is enough for me really.
Although you may be perfectly confident that your reality is so attractive it must be shouted in people's ears and I don't want to ruin that for you. I might just really like listening to something else.

It is essential unfortunately for PVP gameplay in EvE unless you play solo.
I don't particularly like having to have a Mic setup all the time but i do because it's a must.
I've been using a desk stand mic for the last year & found it to be much better than the headsets too, because it doesn't get knocked around as much. I recommend it to anyone who has trouble with fickle headset Mics crapping out all the time. it didn't cost much and has served me well, I fond it's easier to keep a good sound balance with the mic on the desk also, rather than right up in your face like a headset.
Just thought I'd share
Also, it can be fun having a chat with corpies in quit times, just goof off & get to know one another. I live in Australia & really enjoy having a yap with people from all over the world in my EvE Corp. Some of the crew are actually pretty interesting, witty, smart people. Then of course there's the poor people like me who do well to spend more time listening than actually saying anything!!

100% agree with Akita. I don't understand why some alliances damn near force you onto voice comms 23/7 at gun point.
When on a PvP op: Yes, I agree, comms are essential. Other times it's just annoying. I've got a dozen things I'd rather listen to then a bunch of people who can barely speak english (which is fine, most of the time) coupled with terrible reception (annoying at the best of times) babbling on and on about nothing I care about.
Makes me want to rip my hair out.

Ok, I want to try to frame this a bit because there's a lot of things going on so far here:
a) Voice comms lead to saved ships. (I think we can close this discussion.)
b) Voice comms lead to influence.
c) Complaints about how voice comms are interested. (I think we should focus on how to improve this.)
Please carry on with B and C... but don't forget about B, this is really neat discussion so far!

..and I quite agree, voice comm's are infuriating. I'd also like to add, that people who refuse to type are lazy.

There are so many reasons that interacting with other people on an MMO will enrich your game, but by the same token there are so many reasons that interacting with other people on an MMO via voice communications can ruin your game, break your immersion and make you wonder why you logged in today.

Just reflect on the difference between chat channels and voice channels. You don't need to be using voice comms to "connect" with people. Sure, it helps a lot, but not being able to opt out of voice comms means you grant an instant captive audience to all the mouth breathers.

I've found voice chat to be annoying and juvenile in every online game I've ever played and Eve is no different. I don't want to hear your burps, your farts, your blathering on about buds. I stick to text and I don't care who that ****es off.
Besides, I'm usually doing my job when I'm on Eve, talking to suppliers, engineers, or doing scheduling on the phone.

I am somewhat with you. I stick to text when I am busy or when people are just chit chatting. I really am not interested in many of the things talked about on TS. However any time I take my ship out of a safe place I hop into VC because it is much more efficient for coordinating ops and whatnot.

Time and a place. I'll use voice comms in a fight, not to listen to people run off their mouths all day long. You can't tune out uninteresting chat when it's being streamed right into your ears.

I've been in noob corp for over 5 years. Every now and then I get people pestering me to join a player corp. I spam local with obvious scam mexallon contracts for a few minutes, they block me and things go back to business as usuall.
