Eve is a game that is very popular with a lot of highly skilled hackers so i wouldnt be too surprised that if atlas did hire some1 to do this then they and their new "friends" start having problems with their forums / comms / websites etc. They have sown the wind and i hope that they reap the Whirlwind. also if atlas are responsible for hiring these guys then id expect them to be homeless very quickly.

I am just not really sure why a company with a presence as large as ccp does not have a continuity plan in place for this. If they have the talent available in house they could implement remotely triggered source based black holing. If they don't have the talent in house they could use a clean pipes service. Which essentially cleans your traffic in real time and sends it back to you over a gre tunnel. There are many companies which do this as ddos attacks against Caribbean casinos and extorting money were a popular tactic for a while.

Any of these methods could solve this issue without taking systems off line. Remember that availability is just as big a part of security as actual protection of data.

So you actively admit to hiring them on behalf of AtlasDOT to DDoS Eve, all of Atlas agreed, and you're willing to prove it with some payment records?

Yeah it's really easy if you know what you are doing, but since they don't I guess it's not the worst decision to go offline. Hopefully they will learn from this experience and have a better response next time. I'd say any Internet-based organization of any significant size should be prepared for this sort of thing ahead of time but as long as it doesn't happen again I guess I'm of the opinion to chalk it down to a lesson learned. Oh yeah and to blame Atlas. :D
Whaddayall think?
