"Vile Rat" was a name you could mention in any conversation about the pointy end of EVE, without needing to explain who he was. He wasn't a figurehead or a whipping boy, he didn't have a gimmick - he was just a guy who'd accrued enough respect to be noticed.

Vile Rat. I never talked to him myself, but he is famous throughout the EVE community and his name rang a bell.
Once again, the world presents itself as a small place. It's a strange feeling to read on the news about a guy dying in Libya - and then to realize that you "know" this guy.
Well, I didn't know him, but I knew his avatar. And you realize that behind all the avatars there is a living person with his own ideals and plans.
In this case it was person who wasn't afraid to go to foreign countries and to support progress in these countries. He died because blind hatred was sown. Let's hope we all can overcome this hatred soon.

I never had the chance to speak with him in-game, but I knew him for an admirably good fellow as a D&D moderator/poster. It was heartbreaking to read the broadcast last night. My heart goes out to his wife and children.

Vile Rat was a good man, a man of principles, who was driven and passionate. Everyone in Eve is better of from the input he gave in the CSM.
More than that, he was a fun guy to hang out with, have a drink and laugh.
He was a good man...

Now I have the feeling that some people blame solely religion for that.

No, people blamed politics, blamed war, blamed people that manipulate others in order to get power.
Religion does not create fanaticism. People hungry for power, full of hatred, use religion to create fanaticism and use it to serve their own purpose.
So please, stop saying nonsense like "that's how religion always ends", cause you wouldn't say "that's how science always ends" every time someone gets killed by chemicals, bad treatment, or other...

We didn't speak often but I will miss his presence.
May his family have consolation in the fact that, while our pain is less than theirs, he is mourned by many - Eve Friends and Eve Enemies alike.
The world as a whole is diminished whenever a good and passionate man dies, he was working to make the world a safer place so that blind mobs didn't cause this kind of tragedy. |
